Thanks PixelMagic, its now rendering allright, now lets just hope it wont say application run ot of memory...
Anyway, for those who didnt make it what you need to do is download what PixelMagic uploaded in post before this one, extract it somwhere, open "lavafountain_eruption_map_finished.max", render it (its name while saving should become "lava_emitter", if it doesent, rename it in "lava_emmiter.avi", then open "lavafountain_finished.max", and when you go to render it will say it misses a file called "lava_emmiter.avi", now add a new path to directory where you rendered "lavafountain_eruption_map_finished.max" (one we renamed in "lava_emmiter") and click OK, it shouldnt say it misses any file now. Now if you try to render it, you will get awesome lava footage :).
    Thanks to PixelMagic once more.

    Wooow! Thats quite amazing!
I'll try searching google for that plugin, you might want to try that on a video of a river, and post results here :).

I couldn't find that Walker plugin so I just decided to make lava effect with all plugins you get with After Effects, and I can say I got some pretty neat results:
    [image=http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/2614/lavatest000005xo.jpg]

What do you think about mine?
(Ill try to do this effect on a video now, but I need to find one first >.<)

I made an edit of a river video I took to look like lava. It's not perfect, but it's a start! Here. I'll also include my base video so you can try it out. Here.

Hey all, so I made lava video as well, about 30 minutes ago, lol, but couldnt find a good host so I uploaded on youtube and googlevideo, since I know some of you dont like youtube.. etc.
    YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG-bheiPdYA
    GoogleVideo link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6292048234011062709

    Comments?

I like your lava effect jedichowder, but it plays very slow, maybe you slowed down the footage to make it move more like lava (which is good) but I think you slowed it too much, and I didnt slow it down at all. Anyways, you didnt had to cut everything out of the picture, and have just river (lava) in the clip. Just mask everything around the river and make it darker :).

For something like this I'd post it on FileFront so that people can actually use it. That and Google video takes anywhere from a week to a month to get approved.

I really like the effect that you're getting with that gradient method. I did a lava river test myself several months ago by fooling around with displacement maps:

Pretty good, GSWalsh-1137, and 3D as well.
You could have used more red color, and also if you are good with noise effect, noise as well, helps sell the effect if done right.

Nice! You should really go back to that little project and tweak it. Because no one so far has made a lava river that is usable for a film.

Hey Emil that was cool! the only problem is that the water moves really fast and there are a lot of waves.
The water should be more steady.
Anyway can you upload the original video??? i wanna try it too

Yeah, I realized water was moving very fast as well, and lots of waves as well. I'll try to find another river later, from more upper corner so you dont really see the waves, and I'll also slow down the footage a bit, otherwise its.. colorado lava?
Anyway, I like your video as well, sound is very good, in the end of video it reminds me on Battle of Heroes music, strange... I also see you used PixelMagic's lava render.
What you can do is duplicate your video footage, elect everything around the river (if you see sky, dont select sky!!), and using Hue%Saturation you could remove most of color, and make it darker, and in the end when lava is done, colorize it with red so it looks more realistic, and DONT FORGET TO USE MASK FEATHER, otherwise you will see hard edge.
And as for the sky, you could duplicate your video again, select sky only and make it darker (sky would be red as well if you selected it in the first duplicates layer).
Anyway (used word "anyway" 2 times already, 3 if you count this one) here is the footage of my river. It was originaly downloaded from video.google.com though, I uploaded on FileFront since I know most of you dont have plug-ins to download videos from various pages (streaming ones...):
    http://files.filefront.com/RiverFlowavi/;5140849;;/fileinfo.html

Since I couldnt import this footage into After Effects, you might want to use RAD Video Tools to convert the file to the uncompressed avi and open it with After Effects.
You can download it from here:
    http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

Hope this helps, I am now going into the search for more rivers xD...

Hey, I made a new video, where camera moves, not just the water.
I really like come out on this one, it was a bit hard to edit cause it was a mpeg video so when I click to go to the next frame or try to move a point of the masks it takes some time, so I usually skipped lots of frames then put a keyframe, so it might not look the best, but surely worth to watch, and see After Effects is a great program!(hmmm... I sound noobish, or rather stupid... whatever):

Comments? I wanna know if my lava-style is good.

I like it, jfx, color is good, but I think lava moves a bit too slow.
Too bad we cant find slow rivers, Ill try to find one tomorrow though.

Anyway, about my project file and video, I could send you project but not video :s, because I had to re-encode the video to the mpeg or something, cause it couldnt be opened in After Effects, so...
Just search google.video.com for river, or river flow or something...
and you could download it with Greasemonkey, but I use Video Downloader 2.0.
You can download it from http://videodownloader.net.
    Hope this helps you

I like it, but when you added PixelMagix's lava fountain, it became transparent! (Just So You Know)

Since lava footage is the topic, I have a quick question. Is it smart to do a lava fountain in AE 5.5 useing particals? If so, how ould you do it?

I guess it's possible, but I highly doubt u'll get good results. If ur really serious about it look into 3ds max's particle system.

Ok I redid my old lava river video and made it so it had a little bit more black spots. I also tried to fix the motion and color some more.

    http://files.filefront.com/Lava_river_3mov/;5144411;;/fileinfo.html

Here the same effect applied to jedichowder's video. What do u think of it now?
