Yeah, it's sad on how many people can't at least say anything nice for a dead man. God, you gutless jerks! If you can't say anything to help us mourning fans, then don't even bother posting here!

    EDIT
Layne had a problem, a problem he couldn't conquer. He tried and tried. Heroine is one of the most additive drugs out there, kicking the habit just doesn't happen over night. He knew when he started taking the drug he was playing with fire, a fire he throught he could eventually extinguish. The drug beat him at it though.

Alice in Chains was and still is my favorite band, and even with the unfortunate daeth of Layne they will forever live on with three fours albums. It is a sad day for me and all AIC fans out there.

Yeah. The eerie thing being is that I read somewhere that Jerry Cantrell's "Leave Me Alone" was what AIC would sound like when Staley died...

    ...now I wish I hadn't read that.

Exactly. Although I'm not a diehard AIC fan, I do enjoy their music (Them Bones and Man in the Box are brilliant!) and it's a shame that Layne Staley's dead. I don't care about *how* he died, the fact that he's just dead shocks me.

You shouldn't come in here to bash a drug addict that died to a heroin overdose. If that's what what you want to talk about then bring it up in the Senate.

Question, not being insensitive, but if it'd been anyone else would you have really said kind words about the person like you knew them? [face_plain]

    Hell yes.

Bon Scott of AC/DC died 20+ years ago due to choking on his own vomit, and he was certainly drugged up. He was the voice of AC/DC and was sorely missed. I don't care that he did drugs. He may not have made the best choices in the world but I do have infinite respect for him.

The sad thing is that so many people will look on his death and say that they saw it coming. Where were they when he could have used some friendly help to kick the habit?

Historically speaking, many extremely creative people used drugs. Edgar Allen Poe, someone mentioned Hendrix and Morrison, Janis Joplin died from asphyxiation due to alcohol, Bonham was mentioned (his was alcohol). While these people were very exceptional, several of them were given to fits of depression. Without help to correct themselves, they turned to drugs or alcohol. With help, would they have been as creative? We really will never know.

It is sad that Staley died. He did write some truly amazing lyrics. I hope his family and friends can take solace in his legacy being remembered.

I'm talking about someone who was average and not famous. Like you see their name in the newspaper. I'm saddened by the loss of life, not the method by which it was taken.

In that case, yes, unless they did something to me personally that I will never forgive them for.

Yeah, I would have said nice words about them. It's a shame whenever a life is lost.

The passing of a life is something that should never be taken lightly. Don't scoff at those that have made a mistake. Learn from them, and avoid their fate. However, don't dismiss them or their lives just because the path you have chosen in life does not allow you to be empathetic with the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

    His music will be missed.

As far as Soundgarden goes...yes...they broke up. But, Cornell and the musicians of Rage are supposed to be putting out an album. They were supposed to tour on Ozzfest, but cancelled. Should be a fun project to see after development.

    it'a very sad.
I first heard about it on Blind Melon's site, which I hadn't visited for a while.
(Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon died of overdose too...) :(

Staley's voice was really peculiar. I always liked Alice in Chains, especially Jar of Flies and their Unplugged record (not to mention Layne's beautiful performance on the Mad Season album).

    Layne, we'll miss you.

Hey, I ain't never coming home
Hey, I'll just wander my own road
Hey, I can't meet you here tomorrow
    Say goodbye don't follow
    Misery so hollow

Hey you, you're livin' life full throttle
Hey you, pass me down that bottle, yeah
Hey you, you can't shake me round now
I get so lost and don't know how
And it hurts to care, I'm going down

Forgot my woman, lost my friends
Things I'd done and where I've been
Sleep in sweat the mirrors cold
See my face it's growin' old
Scared to death no reason why
Do whatever to get me by
Think about the things I said
Read the page it's cold and dead

    Take me home

Yes it's sad anyone dies. Alice in Chains will be a band remembered in history as an innovator and important influence. Quite honestly is anyone really surprised he died? How long had he been a junkie? 10-15 years?

I really think Soundgarden needs to do a reunion tour or something. You can't get this stuff no more :_|

Alien- Did you ever drink beer? Didn't you know there was a chance you would become an alcoholic? Or that it could impair your judgement and cause you to do something stupid and hurt someone? Or that you could have died from alcohol poisoning?

Do you think that if those things happened to YOU, you'd want to hear how it was your own fault because you knew what could happen if you drank a beer?

Layne Staley was a talented guy with a disease- a chemical dependancy. Did you know all his teeth fell out a few years ago? Do you think he wanted to still be doing this crap after being outfitted for dentures at age 31?

I'm not saying he's blameless. I'm just saying it's awful cold to speak ill of the dead, especially if you don't know him or what he's been through in his life. Is your family and extended family without someone with a substance abuse problem? If not, would you give a crap if it happened to your family? What if it was your Mom? Dad? Would you say "Well, they should have known not to have that wine at dinner before they wrapped themselves around a pole-good riddance."?

Remember that this guy has a family, and freinds that cared about him. Read some of his lyrics, and you'll understand that he hated what he was doing to himself, but was unable to stop. And if you really can't show any compassion for a junkie, at least don't talk trash about him while your fellow posters are trying to deal with his passing...

This deeply saddens me. I just heard about it about and hour ago. He fought the hard fight, and lost. I was reading an article where a couple of years ago he was saying how he was trying to overcome his addiction and wanted to look forward to a long life. I think the people who scoff at this and say that he got what he deserved don't understand addiction. When you start, it seems harmless, like nothing can hurt you, but when you try to stop it is usually just too much. Another example of why not to do drugs.

The ignorance in this thread is disturbing.

No one is denying that drugs are bad, and yes, this result was brought upon him by his own hand...But that does not mean he is a "loser", and that no one should care.

I was a fan of Alice In Chains when I was 13 years old, back in 1992-1993, when they were most popular. I loved the Dirt album, and my favorite song and music video was "Man in the Box".

Just in the past two years, with the release of their greatest hits CD, did I really rediscover their music and realize that they just weren't another grunge band...Their music was emotional, poignant, and touching to me...Moreso than Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Nirvana, and lightyears beyond the watered-down shlock of Cr--d. ( I'm sorry, I can't type the name of that horrendous excuse for a band who rips off the good music of the past to make a hit today. )

Rest in peace, Layne. Your music lives on and brings forth memories in the soundtrack of my life.

    1. Creed sucks.
    2. Shorty, ya need to check out Soundgarden, I'd recommend buying "The A-Sides" (like a greatist hits package but there's only one hit on it) since you're new to them. Make sure to listen to the older Soundgarden too.
    3. Fan of AIC since '88 when I first saw the "video" for "And We Die Young" on Headbangers Ball.
    4. For those that followed the band, Layne's death is tragic, but definately not unexpected.
    5. For those that didn't follow the band, you're missing some great music. Put down the Creed cd and go buy DIRT by AIC. You also have no right to comment other than the usual "drugs are bad, mmmkay?" comments. Listen to their music (and Mad Season's) and you'll see that this guy wanted to stop, but knew he would die if he didn't (see the lyrics to Don't Follow).
    6. There are many other Seattle bands still around, but yes only Pearl Jam is left out of the ones that 'made it'. They also have a former heroin addict in the group (hint: it's not Vedder). Don't expect any new PJ stuff until summer 2003, possibly even later now that this has happened.
    7. Andrew Wood finally will get to jam with Layne.
    8. Creed still sucks.
