Lost Stars has characters wondering how the Falcon is still flying. I actually thought Luke was ruder about the Falcon than Leia was.

Being rude about the Falcon is a running joke. :p

Its kinda like when you see a crappy looking car in real life, but in actuality there is a lot going for it under the hood.

Leia is not stuck up because she insults people and crappy spaceships. Hell, even Lando called it a hunk of junk and he loved that ship dearly.

Micromanaging Han, while he is trying to evade the Empire may not be rude, but it's damn annoying . . . and controlling.

In what way is Leia micromanaging Han?

You are forgetting that is wasn't just love for her home, but Alderaan and more importantly her father were to help retrieve the information from R2D2. She had no idea if the plans were already there or not, but at that point Alderaan was the hope for the rebellion to figure out how to destroy the death star.

If I hated racism in fantasy-worlds, I couldn't stand the TES-universe (Oblivion, Skyrim), but I love it. As long as it is shown as a bad thing, it is fine imo. I think in the core casual racism is quite commonly found, there was also an imperial officer who called Chewie a thing. Han Solo and Luke Skywalker who are both from the rim don't have that kind of prejudice.

And in the EU, there's other examples of speciesist Rebels. Even Mon Mothma, rebel leader, uses a term for Palpatine that smacks of casual speciesism in the Farlander Papers (book that came with the X-Wing computer game: "A Rodian in Ewok's clothing" (in place of "a wolf in sheep's clothing").

She's a military commander who's fought the Empire all her life.

The fact she has some ideas about how things should happen is a MASSIVE pro for Leia, not even close to a con.

Again, what is mircomangaing? She doesn't tell him what to do every single second they're together. She doesn't give him a list of tasks to perform in order.

I think what LZM65 was getting at is that even though Leia is the highest ranking amongst the three of them there, the rescue operation could have been seen as Han and Luke's domain, and yet Leia appointed herself the 'boss' of that too, to a certain extent. As someone who has worked for a first class micro-manager I can kind of sympathise.

Well, she appoints herself boss because there wasn't anyone in charge. Han said, "He's the brains, sweetheart!" and Luke stammers a reply, but Leia cuts him off since neither one of them have a plan, nor the testicular fortitude to get them out their predicament. That's different from micro-managing.

Yeah, I agree. She was well within her rights to seize control from what appeared to be two bumbling idiots at some points. I was merely trying to answer your repeated question on behalf of another poster.

My eight-year-old niece's reaction to watching ANH and the hallway rescue scene for the first time: "Good thing [Princess Leia] took charge. She's smarter than both of them!"

I high-fived her and then thought of this thread.

Not really. I thought Leia was supposed to be a political leader . . . a senator in the OT. She only became one of the Rebellion's leaders, due to Bail Organa's death.

She led them to the Death Star's garbage compactor and nearly got them killed.

And Leia's penchant for micromanaging was also on display in "Empire Strikes Back", when she kept criticizing Han, while he was trying to fly them away from the danger of Vader and the Imperial Fleet.

Leia's penchant for micromanaging came from George Lucas not wanting to make Leia not look like the typical damsel in distress and a pretty face. To me and many others, Leia's weaknesses in her character, are highlighted by her constantly criticising the male heroes who are always coming to her rescue. When making a film, these tactics will convince the average movie goer that Leia is a strong independent woman. However, when you dig beneath the surface, you truly why she is in the movie.

And "male" heroes are not supposed to be subject to criticism--why exactly?

Leia being strong and independent as opposed to a damsel in distress is a "flaw"--why exactly?

I think everyone needs to consider whether criticisms you give to Leia's character would also be given to a male character. This discussion has circled around enough, and if it delves further into sexism, passive-aggressive or blatant, it's getting locked.

What I was trying to convey was... As the audience, we are meant to think Leia is a strong independent person. But all we see is Leia being constantly rescued by other characters and whinging about their efforts, offering nothing constructive.
To me, Leia is a character who is lacking in substance. Unlike recent movie heroines such as Katniss Everdeen, Bella Swan and even Padme Amidala, who all exhibit tremendous inner strength, who don't completely rely on help from their friends. I also feel that the casting of these 3 actresses helped shape the overall development and success of their characters.
I really hope in episode VII, Leia can be the strong character I know Leia's capable of being.

What *I* see is a bunch of folks taking turns in the rescuer, rescued role. As to "constantly criticizing the male heroes who are always coming to her rescue" it's a bit telling, or so it seems, that you have to highlight those rescuers' gender (it reads like the "male" is the major issue).

Even if her plan could have led to death or recapture, she at least came up with a plan when her rescuers stared at each other while wondering what the plan even was. That particular criticism seems uncalled for - maybe you should blame the male rescuers for not having a fully thought out plan before they started blasting away and calling attention to themselves.

Marion Ravenwood was a badass but she got rescued a few times as well. It happens. What would make the character weak, dependent, less badass, would be refusing to lift a finger in self-help when in danger. And whining about being in danger in the first place, as opposed to calling out the incompetence of the attempted rescuers.

Obi-Wan snarked at Anakin in AOTC for his incompetent rescue attempt. Was he being nasty and offering nothing of substance? Was he supposed to be sweet and polite to Anakin and thank him for trying? It certainly never bothered me that he was none of those things. In fact, "good job" was rather hilarious.

As far as the comparisons with modern characters--Padme was great in TPM and AOTC and an abomination in ROTS, Bella Swan is horrible because she spent most of New Moon in her rocking chair pining, and Katniss was great in the first Hunger Games book but I haven't seen the films and I think Jennifer Lawrence is overrated.

Please forgive if i'm mistaken [face_blush] .... Is your post for me?
If it is, it was never my intention to criticise the boys who come to the rescue.

Knock off the passive-aggressive routine--you knew her post was for you--as well as the antiquated gender politics.

There will be no more warnings.

You know, I've been thinking about if Leia has any major flaws and I can't really think of anything. I'm not saying she's flawless, it's just there's nothing really noticeable that comes to mind. The only one that might be a flaw is her bossiness but as others have said, she kinda had to be. Especially when your rescuers don't have a clue of what they're doing.

Also I like how snarky Leia is to the bad guys and friends alike. Witty banter and snarky comments are what makes Star Wars dialog fun to me.

I'm deliberately ignoring a question as it may lead to a discussion the mods don't want here, but I did wish to comment on AFS post: she rightfully compares Obi-Wan's reaction to his AoTC "rescue" to Leia's, and the only excuse I can see for one being called out and one not is that this thread is devoted to Leia's flaws, not to the wise-ass character comments in general. One other possible reason is one I think the mods don't want here..

The fact that many of us "excuse" Leia's sarcastic words (or insults, many believe) is less thinking she was correct or right, but stressed, and when stressed, most folks tend to overlook polite courtesy. Adrenaline can do that to folks.

Not to mention, sarcasm is something many, many folks don't appreciate and think is terribly rude, while to some of us, sarcasm is a natural part of who we are and is never meant to be taken as a rude put-down but a funny quip.
