    Where did a Jedi put his lightsaber when it wasn't on his belt? Like while he slept or bathed, or after he died. Are there any in-universe examples of any kind of storage box or charging station they may have had?

    I recently got ahold of a copy of the Jedi Path and every episode of the Clone Wars to date. It has rekindled my love for the Star Wars universe, which had kind of died off shortly before Episode II came out. My forays into the expanded universe stopped right before Episode I premiered, so I'm completely out of the loop on anything published since around 1998. I'm trying to catch up now.

    This is in the prop section because I'm a big prop collector and builder. The Jedi Path has made me want to expand my Star Wars collection and I'm looking for an interesting way to display my lightsaber. I'm swiping some ideas from the Jedi Path box, and plan to create a box that will rise when you open the lid. Unlike the Jedi Path case, it will be made of wood and will not have any electronics (sort of like a jewelery box, I suppose). I may add electronics... I'm not sure yet.
    I'm hoping to burn the Jedi symbol into the wood and possibly add some aurabesh text on it somewhere. I am, of course, going to age the box and possibly add metal accents but I'm not sure.
    I don't want to replicate anything that has come before, but I am looking for inspiration. I'd like for it to be as in-universe as possible, though, and would like to make it something identifiable for fans. I understand the prequel era sabers have charging ports, so I assume they have a charger, and I'd like to work that into the design if appropriate.

    The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the Jedi Path box in action was the box that Count Dooku presented Asajj Ventress her lightsabers in, in the cell-animated Clone Wars Chapter 8.

    Dooku said "Consider this ... a gift", and the four elaborately decorated doors on the top of the rectangular box opened like petals.

    There are a few promotion pictures of Mace Windu for Episode I where he is wearing the same lightsaber as Eeth Koth instead of the lightsaber that he is wearing the movie. This is explained after-the-fact in a comic book as Mace Windu and Eeth Koth having borrowed eachothers lightsabers for a while.
    In the comic book drawing of the scene where they exchange lightsabers, their lightsabers are wrapped in bandages. I have not been able to find that image anywhere, unfortunately.

    In book 3 or 4 of the X-Wing novels, someone is running around in a museum of old jedi artifacts, which include robes and lightsabers of the mostly unnamed jedi. Each jedi manaquin had its own display case.

    Thank you very much for the quick and helpful replies.
    I tracked down images of the box and wrap you mentioned, DarthLars. Here they are:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/Saberbox01.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/saberwrap01.jpg]
    The wavy details on the box are a little... incoherent, I guess. They don't seem to follow any kind of pattern, though it does kind of look like a wave in the middle of a storm or blowing wind.
    The box does seem to share slight elements of some Holocrons I've seen, both Jedi (the corner accents and the angular nature of the center accents) and Sith (the triangular patterns). I suppose that box would reflect both sides of Dooku. I may look at Holocrons for further inspiration.
    The wrap is also interesting. It's a little basic, though I'm sure there is some kind of ceremonial pattern to it (much like, well, everything that is folded or wrapped in the Japanese culture - or even the American flag). And it's interesting to see just how HUGE the wrap is around the saber. It shows how important the sabers really are to the Jedi and how much care they are given. They're certainly not things to be tossed in junky boxes (though don't tell Old Ben that). I'll have some kind of cloth wrap around my saber now and will try to pad or line the inside of the box, at the very least.

    Koohii, were the old X-Wing stories ever turned into comics?

    Sorry for the double post but...
    I've decided to line the interior with a light blue linen. I'll probably put a layer of padding or cotton followed by the linen so the hilt won't get banged up. I also chose an off white silk to use for the saber "wrap" as seen in my previous post, though the saber will always be unwrapped.
    I found a 13x2.5x4 unfinished wood box at Hobby Lobby for $4.99 and used a 40% off coupon from their website.
    I'm not 100% on the decorations at this time. I looked around Hobby Lobby for accents to put on the box and had no real luck.
    I am in the process of making a basic template in MSPaint that I will print on cardstock to make a stencil. I'll cut it out with an xacto knife and stencil it onto the box, then either use a woodburner or dremel to carve the patterns into the wood.
    I'm going to sand it then stain it to give it a smooth antique finish.

    For the top I may have the Jedi's name in aurebesh carved across the top. Then near the center I'll have the Jedi symbol like the one seen on the cover to the Jedi Path. At the bottom I may have the Jedi symbol for Master that is also taken from the Jedi Path, that is an aurebesh "M" in a slightly stylized circle.
    Along the broad sides I plan to have the Jedi Code carved into the wood, but it is a little difficult since the Code is 5 lines long. I may have 3 lines on one side and only 2 on the other, or just put the entire code on both sides.
    For the top and bottom sides I may burn this symbol that I found in the Jedi Path:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/Symbol01.jpg]

    I'm stuck on the lid interior. The box will (almost) always be open, so the inside of the lid will be seen more than the outside. I have no clue what to put inside it. Anyone have any suggestions? I thought maybe a brief history of the Jedi and the saber in aurabesh, presented in a sort of old english style. Sort of like, "This is the Lightsaber of Jedi Master ____, student of Jedi Master ____, Teacher to Jedi Knight _____." and so on.

    Yeah, pretty sure Dark Horse had the license at the time. Probablly some phone-book edition out there.

    maybe put the 5 lines of Jedi Code on the inside?

    Dark Horse made X-Wing comics that were chronologically before the X-Wing novels. The novels themselves were never adapted into comics.

    There is also an instance in the Tales of the Jedi comics, I believe it was The Sith War story arc, in which a Jedi Master buries multiple ancient lightsabers in the ground rather unceremoniously in order to preserve them from destruction (granted, it was during an invasion so it was more hiding than anything else). The little burial spot is discovered by Luke Skywalker in the Dark Empire 2 comic series.

    And actually, Mace is wearing the lightsaber that was later assigned to Eeth Koth (very) briefly in The Phantom Menace (you can see it during the parade scene at the end of the film). For whatever reason, the people behind the Visual Dictionary gave him a different saber, the one that looked like a truncated ad reversed Maul saber, which has since been given to other Jedi characters including Luminara Unduli in AOTC and ROTS.

    Thanks, BPStoyle. Here's the image you're talking about. It's issue 5 of the Sith War, from Tales of the Jedi. One of the many perks of living above a comic shop is I can get pretty much any comic almost instantly.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/Burial01.jpg]
    So we have an example of a lightsaber being traded to another Jedi. Eeth Koth has Windu's saber on his hip and pretty much just hands it back to Windu, though Windu has Koth's saber in a large and elaborate (probably ceremonial) wrap.
    We have an example of a Sith presenting lightsabers to an assassin in a decorated, mechanical box.
    There is evidence of Jedi museums, though I can find no image of it (I have read that X-Wing novel because I remember that scene, but it was at least 12 years ago). Here's an image I found of a possible museum display:
    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/e/ea/Lightsabers_galore_JATM.jpg]
    Jedi probably kept sabers and other artifacts and had an interest in preserving them for future generations (from the first image in this post).
    Obi-Wan keeps Anakin's saber in a pretty elaborate chest, presumably with the training remote and other things. I always had the impression that the chest was sort of a junk drawer, but I'm not sure. Here are some images I found from this thread at theRPF:

    [image=http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/7537/chestrsti0.jpg]
    [image=http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/307/owkchestqd7.jpg]

    I've looked at a couple of ancient warrior / warrior-monk cultures and I don't really see anything consistent or usable. Samurai passed their blades down through the family after death and they were presented prominently in the home when not in use. They always had some kind of sword or weapon on them, like the Jedi seem to, but we are all familiar with the traditional samurai sword tiered display stand. Some blades were kept in "shirasaya" which was a nondescript wood scabbard when they had prolonged periods of non-use.
    Other cultures are a little more difficult to pin down. Vikings were usually buried with their swords or they were destroyed. I'm not sure on other cultures. They seemed to be preserved in wooden boxes or kept in a bag or wrap and passed on to descendants.
    It's possible most lightsabers were destroyed when the Jedi died, but I don't know how. Were they burned with the Jedi? Would a lightsaber even burn? Were they buried or stored with the ashes? Is there a huge stockpile of lightsabers in the Jedi archives?

    I don't know. I know I'm going to take the "box" route, but the more I think of it, I doubt that's how Lucas would do it.
    I'd imagine instead of a box, he would use a Japanese style stand. Like this one:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/stand01.jpg]
    I'd say it would be metallic, probably a brushed stainless steel. There would be a Jedi syombol on the front, and it would probably glow, and the whole thing would be hovering.

    Thanks Miba. I've noticed a tendency for the comics to go the shadowbox route. I may be able to work with that for other Jedi "artifacts."

    I've been reading through the Jedi Path again and I've noticed I probably shouldn't use this symbol:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/Symbol01.jpg]
    It's really not that much of a generic symbol to be associated with a single Master but is more for the Order as a whole. The symbols mean (starting at top right and moving clockwise) the High Jedi Council, the Council of First Knowledge, the Reassignment Council and the Council of Reconciliation. I'd imagine a Jedi would have to be a sitting member of any (or all) of these councils to put their symbol on their stuff. It doesn't seem appropriate.

    I had worked with the idea of placing the winged Jedi Crest in the center of the lid (outside) with a pattern that heavily resembles a Holocron around it. I was going to use a a Clone Wars (tv) style Holocron for the basis when I realized the symbol for the Council of First Knowledge is also the pattern on the outside of the Holocron. Here's a reference pic.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/holocron01.jpg]
    There are slight differences but I believe it is intentional and I don't think it would work for my particular character.

    I am going to work in the Three Pillars, though.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/symbols01.jpg]
    I'm researching additional symbols and sacred Jedi sayings to place around the box.

    I believe I am going to create a Viking-like Jedi for this, and take inspiration from the Vikings for the box. I'm looking into doing a knot-work pattern across the outside to fill some of the empty space and doing an obituary for the inside of the box. I even had the idea to translate the obituary into Danish or Old Norse, then to Aurebesh. No one would ever be able to read it, naturally, but I guess that's fine with me.
    I may even do it in the style of an old runestone, with the Aurebesh text inside a knotwork-style serpent. Similar to this:
    [image=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/S%C3%B6_65%2C_Djulefors.jpg/440px-S%C3%B6_65%2C_Djulefors.jpg]

    As for the obituary itself, I'm researching some things a Jedi would view as important, as well as what I feel is important. I have a strong interest in Viking culture and religion and I want to integrate some of that into it.
    For example, a Viking obituary would read something like, "Here lies _____, son of _____, father of _____, who comes from the lands of _____, who died in ____ while battling _____."
    Of course, most Jedi do not know about their parents, and if they do they don't feel any attachment to them. They are mostly forbidden to marry or have children, so that's out. Their place of birth isn't very important either.
    So for a Jedi I may have, "Here is the Lightsaber of Master and Guardian of the Jedi Order Sid Yelbsh Kircy, student of Master Lenam Noles, teacher to Con Tedit, who died slaying the great serpent Yormagad on the planet Ota."
    My idea is that this is the box in which the Jedi kept his saber, and after he died his Padawan converted it into a memorial by etching his obituary on the inside. The Padawan kept it and possibly passed on to his apprentice and so on.
    This is all theoretical, of course, and not set in stone. And even after I carve and stain the box, none of that is especially hard to do or expensive to make so I can toss it out and start over. I'm just looking for inspiration (and hoping others will read this and use the pictures and insight to do something similar).

    Another idea, should anyone else see this thread and wish to do this, would be to check out display boxes at craft stores. I was at a discount store last night and saw display boxes for sports balls or for model cars that are a good size for displaying lightsabers.

    Speaking of those displays, at my local Hobby Lobby, near the unfinished wood and cardboard section, there are several different sizes of acrylic boxes you can use for this. There are also several cubes of various size that can be used to make Holocrons.
    http://paperkraft.blogspot.com/2011/01/star-wars-clone-wars-jedi-holocron.html
    This holocron, unaltered and printed on letter size paper, fits inside one extremely well. Once you slide it inside you can maybe trace the design with paint pens or carve it with a dremel.

    Just a quick update on this. I seem to have misplaced the tips for my woodburner, so I've been using wood carving tools. It's actually pretty difficult and I've had some less than stellar results (since it's really my first attempt to carve patterns or designs).
    I don't have any pics yet because I'm not 100% satisfied with anything I've done to it so far.
    I now think I may integrate some "futuristic" stuff into this. Possibly some kind of lighting or... I don't know yet.

    This project has grown alot from the original plan to display a Hasbro FX saber or painted piece of PVC. I've gone to the Custom Saber Shop and ordered a saber of my own design to display in it. I'm also going to create some Jedi gear (grapples, communicators, etc) to display with it, and I'm going to build a holocron and even the Jedi's personal journal, possibly with inserts (similar to the Jedi Path, but more along the lines of Drakes Journal from Uncharted II).

    So far the cost for the box itself is around $3.00. I already had the wood cutting tools, but you can get those for around $5. The fabric for the inside was about $5-ish, the acrylic box for the Holocron was $3.00. The lightsaber is $110. I really need to work on the box and make it something worthy of displaying such an... expensive artifact.

    I'm still in the early stages of this, but here are a few images of everything so far. I am thinking about removing the aurebesh text on the outside of the front. To me, it looks a bit jumbled.
    First is a picture of a quick "wrap" like the one Mace Windu gave Eeth Koth.

    And one with the lightsaber wresting on the "wrap"

    Here's one by the Jedi Path and my Holocron

    Thanks.

    I'm still working on several inserts for my Jedi Journal. In the book, I will make note that this particular Jedi smashes up his datapads on a regular basis and isn't a fan of the holonet or holoprojectors ("they hurt my old eyes" or something similar). Because of this he likes to have hard copies of a lot of stuff both for practicality sake and to keep as mementos.
    I'll have a printout of the initial orders from the Council and the Senate to find a missing Jedi, and broker peace between a race of raiders and pirates and an invading civilization.
    I'll also have a copy of a treaty written up by the invaders and the republic. The coversheets are based on the Treaty of Versailles:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/treaty01.jpg]
    The treaty itself will be in three languages: High Galactic, Galactic Standard and a yet unnamed alien language (using the font "Dark Katarn" which is taken from Dark Forces).
    The treaty is based directly on American Indian treaties.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/treaty02.jpg]
    I also have the idea for credit chips, coins from the native people and the invaders and native plants sandwiched in the pages.
    I'll also have things like freighter tickets (based on one from the Indiana Jones Grail Diary)

    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/ticket01.jpg]
    Holy texts from both the natives and invaders (WIP):
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/text01.jpg]
    Print off's or "clippings" from the holonet news (WIP, and designed to look a little like old-school internet):
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/holonet01.png]
    Here's the box with some stain on it. Still a WIP:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/IMAG0120.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/IMAG0118.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/IMAG0121.jpg]

    Does anyone have any ideas for some more "mundane" props I can stick in? I plan to include maps (both star maps and planet maps), sketches of landmarks, battles and people. Also, electronics for my saber are on the way.

    As for the Holocron, here's the link:

    So here's another image-filled post for my little box-thing. I believe I'm nearly finished. I have some additional wood burning to do on the inside lid, as well as a little more to do on the outside front. I also think I am going to put a switch on the outside for the led, and maybe a charge port for it.
    First, I found an image of a good looking box from issue 3 of Star Wars: Legacy War. It is apparently used exactly like mine, and held a lightsaber.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/LegacyWarBox01.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/LegacyWarBox02.jpg]

    I found a pattern on the exterior of the Jedi Temple:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/temple02.jpg]
    I used this as a jumping off point and put this design on the outside:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox01.jpg]
    The lines aren't supposed to be symmetrical. I suppose it's a visual representation of the force, so I also had some of the lines change direction or stop at some of the other shapes (the circles are floaty-balls or something, and the squiggles are... well, I have no idea).
    Second, I decided to go with the knotwork runestone pattern for the inside of the lid. It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox02.jpg]
    I'm in the process of expanding the knotwork to cover more of the lid.
    I decided to write about the Jedi in Aurebesh inside the knot. It's only in ink at this time, and will likely always be ink. I wrote the Jedi's name, as well as, "Jedi Master" and repeated "Jedi" a few times, then filled in the rest with random letters.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox03.jpg]
    Next is an image of my saber inside the box. This is how it would appear, in-universe. It would always be covered inside the box. For display, though, it won't be.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox09.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox07.jpg]
    And here's the lit-up portion of the stand. I used some old led's I had lying around, as well as a half-dead 9-volt I found in a drawer. I also used a clear plastic portion from a Master Replicas saber stand.
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/OuterBox04.jpg]

    I love the idea of a Jedi journal...and having freighter tickets - noone can complain that they have no ticket then!
    As for things that you could put in it, how about some artwork (of own creation), or on the idea of maps, something like the London underground one.
    Were you thinking of buying a notebook and then sticking this in, or constructing it yourself?

    Thank you. I was planning on making my own journal but I'm not sure. My penmanship isn't the best so I'd hoped to either find or create a nice font that looks like handwriting. I'd also like to share the contents of the journal in the fanfic forums after I'm done with it.
    Here is another long, long post where I ramble about my research and creations. Personally, I think it has some good info peppered throughout...

    My research:

    I've been researching a lot on Lightsabers, their storage / display and what happens to them after a Jedi dies.
    - I've posted the pics of what a retired Jedi might do with his saber while it's not in use.
    - In Darth Bane: Legacy of Evil, his saber is on his nightstand while he sleeps. This is also shown in the Clone Wars cartoon in the Nightsisters trilogy when Dooku's saber is unceremoniously on a table next to his bed.
    - Some Jedi are made to remove their lightsabers while meeting with / sitting on the Jedi Council. Here are a few shots from the KOTOR comic series:
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/stand02.jpg]
    [image=http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/GiantSlor/Stand01-1.jpg]
    - We also know this tradition does NOT continue in the Episode I-III era, since we see several Jedi with sabers in those scenes. It is possible this is limited to training sessions, or is possibly a non-universal rule. Either way it shows how sabers may be kept while not in use.
    - Also and most importantly, in issue 24 of the KOTOR comic series (which is excellent) we learn that lightsabers are often decommissioned then sent to a fallen Jedi's family.
    - We also know a Jedi isn't necessarily close to his birth family, but there is evidence he is allowed to contact them, and possibly even build relationships with them once he is knighted. Evidence of this includes Dooku's title of Count, the lines from the previously mentioned comic (as well as several scenes throughout that comic that involve the parents and siblings of Jedi) and the fact that some Jedi speak with accents, keep their given name / surname, and wear clothing native to their species and homeworld. If you think about it, they are taken to the council before they learn to speak, yet some have fairly thick native accents. This means either the Jedi were allowed to connect to their roots on their own, which would include native traditions and possibly family traditions, or this is taught to them at the temple, which would also instill a sense of pride for ones native culture and could extend to family. And I'm sure some of them aren't physically able to speak Basic, but I'm overlooking that for now.
    We also know there are very strong ties between Master and Apprentice, as illustrated when Anakin says Obi-Wan is like his father and Obi-Wan calls Anakin his brother. It isn't a stretch to assume that a Lightsaber could be given to an Apprentice or Master if a Jedi has no family, or has chosen not to contact them.
    - This leads to a few questions, though. Like why Jedi don't have a bunch of Lightsabers everywhere. For example, a Jedi dies, leaves his saber to his Padawan. Padawan becomes a knight, dies, leaves his saber to his Padawan. In that example, what happened to the original Jedi's saber? Is it passed down too? If your Master dies, do you get his saber, his masters saber, his masters masters saber, etc? I kind of doubt it.
    - Some Jedi have multiple sabers. Is it possible these extras are the sabers of those dead Jedi?
    - Lightsabers are simultaneously inconsequential, disposable tools a Jedi uses for survival and their most prized (and only) possession. Some Jedi take great care in personalization and making it

    First of I would like to say that I really enjoy your projects and have similar thoughts of how to display my own lightsabers and jedi equipment.

    I did however find a few inconsistencies in your "ramblings" as you put it.

    It is the actually the crystal that is sent to the family as seen since Shel (brother to late padawan Shad Jelavan) is shown
    having her brothers crystal as a pendant in her necklace.

    It is shown in Tales of the Jedi: Sith War that the Jedi do amass a collection of lightsabers in their archives.
    If this is the case 4000 years later is hard to say. But not unlikely. However some passing of sabers do occur. Obi-Wan is shown to fight with Qui-Gon's saber several years after the Naboo crisis. However this may have been retconed.

    You're right. I read that part wrong. They sent the crystals to the families instead of the sabers. It's also important to note that it said they sent crystals to all of their families and not just the one they tried to manipulate.
    This also shows they kept the sabers in storage at the temple on Taris. Here's a pic of that:

    Also notice the stand is different - maybe some kind of metal or plastic and shaped differently than the wooden one I posted earlier.

    I posted the image of the Jedi trying to save the sabers from the Sith War series. He makes note that they are some of the oldest Lightsabers they have and are worth saving. I wonder if they bother to keep lightsabers that belonged to inconsequential Padawans?

    There are tons of bookbinding tutorials out on the net that I've found. If you want, I can give you the links to a few.

    I like the sound of the plot behind the journal. I would love to read some when you decide that it's ready to post.

    I also wanted to ask if you minded if I also made my own 'Jedi journal', set around the time of The Phantom Menace, and moving on from there. In this case, it would be like yours in that all the things she has amassed over the years ends up in there, but instead of being just one journal about one mission, it becomes her life story.

    Of course, you would prefer for me not to, I would be happy to oblige.

    EDIT: Me and my grammar!

    No, please, go ahead with your journal. I'm glad I could provide at least a little inspiration but, to be honest, I wouldn't mind if it was a total copy of my idea (contents and all) because I'm kind of ripping off the Jedi Path and a similar Indy book that came out a few years ago.

    I've found several book binding tutorials online but I haven't had much luck with the materials. I'm concerned primarily with the contents right now.

    Thanks to this project I've submerged myself in Star Wars. I've ordered about a dozen or more books and nearly a long box of comics and seasons 1 & 2 of the Clone Wars and I've built 3 lightsabers and 1 Holocron... this has turned into an ordeal!
