By 2050 the lightsaber colors will put the growth of new Crayola Crayons to shame.

Some of the colors I most want the see in the ST:
Blue, green, and red (the basic)
    Purple
A black darksaber-style lightsaber. This looked awesome in TCW.
A lightsaber with lightning crackling around it, creating zapping noises.

A lightsaber fan. That'd be neat. Like that thing Monica Bellucci has in "Brotherhood of the Wolf." But with lightsabers. [face_plain]

You really think the post about a light saber that's so light that it can float away is a serious idea? And absolutely not a joke?

Yellow, purple, orange--tho the latter's more of an "eh, nice to see, but whatever". I'm tired of all the RGB. It just feels to me like George said "Well, that's all we had in the original trilogy, so that's all there is", forgetting that there were only 4 lightsabers in the originals (and 3 wielders, not counting Han); the only opportunity for more colors was if Anakin's & Obi-Wan's sabers in the first film hadn't both been blue.

Yellow's been teased as far back as Kenner's card for Obi-Wan, and the first Farmboy Luke figure. The Clone Wars introduced them into the TV media, at least, with the Jedi Temple guards in the final arc of Season 5, so at least there's precedent outside of books, games, and comics. And it'd be really, really nice to see a villainous saber user sporting something other than red (or their old Jedi blue saber, Vader). Shake things up a bit.

Also, I'm not sure about new saber colors, simply because we were told outright that Jedi only use green and blue sabers traditionally. I'm still a fan of yellow, but I think it'd be inconsistent that none of the hundreds of Jedi on Geonosis had another colored lightsaber. Maybe another violet lightsaber would be cool. Also, I liked how they showed the gathering of the saber crystals in the Clone Wars micro series. Building the saber itself would be a cool topic to explore.

We were never told outright that Jedi used green & blue traditionally...in the movies. That was George, outside, who gave Sam his own color as a favor... and there weren't 'hundreds' of Jedi on-screen on Geonosis (that I recall; I know about 200 joined Mace in his rescue mission, but I'm not sure those 200 were ever properly represented on-screen)... and George must've given some sort of blessing for the Jedi Temple Guards sporting yellow double-bladed sabers in TCW.

But all of that--ALL of that--doesn't mean much when it comes to New Jedi Post-ROTJ. The OLD Jedi Order is dead & gone--with it, the traditions and all of that. Luke's basically got a clean slate. While saber-color is ultimately an inconsequential element of it, the Old Jedi Order was broken & failing... the Jedi losing their connection to the Force, blinded by the dark side, stuck in their ways, dogmatic... one could argue that the blue/green restriction was symptomatic of that. Even post-AOTC, stories/games set in the Old Old Republic, KOTOR & TOR for instance, have other colors available. Easily available, in the KOTOR games & series... TOR tried to apply some of George's movie-restrictions to the MMO (a mistake, IMO), by having green & blue being the easiest for Jedi to get/use (tho a yellow crystal was easily available early on, at the cost of a dark side point or two as I recall), and I think there were/are even restrictions on the blue, green, and red crystals preventing lightsiders from using red, darksiders from using blue/green (not factions, tho--Force alignment only) and making purple, white, black-with-outline, and other hues of blue, green, and red really tough to get and/or only for advanced higher-level players. Orange & yellow were fairly easily attainable while leveling, however.

Anyway. Back to the ST... it's Luke's order. If he finds some world other than Ilum where viable saber crystals can be found, and they're in a myriad of colors, there's no reason he must limit his students' from choosing/finding colors beyond green & blue, just as there's no reason he has to dress in Obi-Wan robes or force his students to likewise dress like Tatooinian peasants with brown bathrobes.

I'm not suggesting that it's an in-universe restriction, just saying the fact that they weren't shown previously makes it unlikely. If they were to expand the colors, I think an an in-universe explanation would be in order, like you suggest.

Again, it was only in AOTC and ROTS where it becomes clear that saber colors are limited. Maybe there were hundreds on Geonosis, maybe there weren't; the point being that such a large number was shown without any variety. The EU tried to expand this territory for the Council members at the time of TPM, but that also didn't last.

So technically, it's not in-universe, but I'm saying that George made that point clear, and upheld it in the movies. That much cannot be denied.

I always assumed the colors were symbolic of the characters by extension (no pun intended). Otherwise it's just, 'Wow! Look at all the pretty colors. Wee'.:)

Well that goes right out the window considering Windu had a purple saber doesn't it? Even if it was done as a "favor".

I do think there needs to be a limit. Keep it to basic colors and none of this cracking, rainbow colored saber nonsense. Getting into power ranger territory with all that.

There were no other purple sabers in the saga, however. We can assume that it's a unique occurrence. Unlike other colors, the purple blade is only attributed to one character in the movies. Even though it was special to Samuel L. Jackson, literally no one else was granted this privilege, not even stunt coordinator Nick Gillard (who wanted a yellow blade). So I still do say that George was strict on this.

And I say it doesn't matter because that was the old order in the PT, which was based on a very limited sampling from the OT where we only saw Luke's 2 sabers, Obi-Wan's, and Vader's, and I think George just got lazy/comfortable with that and figured "That's how it is for EVERYONE! Wait, who's calling me? Samuel L Jackson? What's he want?".

Even with how many Jedi we saw on Geonosis, and the almost-all-Council-Members we saw wielding sabers elsewhere in the PT, that was a small percentage of the Jedi Order as a whole. As of AOTC, there were supposed to be about 10,000 Jedi in the galaxy... you can poll 200 people and they may all say they're Democrat or Republican with one Green Party guy in the mix (or the Purple Party, in this case), but that doesn't mean a poll of 10,000 would yield the same results. George's will aside, maybe the same could've been true of the Jedi Order. Maybe there were guys who preferred going on missions to slumming around the Temple who were wielding purple or yellow sabers, so they weren't around to answer's Mace's call to arms.

Broadening things out to the larger timeline, you've got the Republic reformation 1,000 years before the films, when the old ancient EU kinda 'ends' and the 'Saga era' EU, by which I mean Darth Bane & the Banite Sith, begins... it's where the Sith changed their methods drastically, and the Jedi seemed to as well, becoming more tools of the government than servants of the Force, tightening up traditions & rules, no more Jedi families, no more running around in whatever the hell clothes you wanted...and, based on stuff like KOTOR showing Jedi life 3,000+ years earlier, now no more using whatever crystal you want. You go Ilum or you go to the Agri Corps. Unless your name's Windu.

Episode VII (or the very end of Episode VI, if you prefer) marks the beginning of another new era. Luke's not beholden to the old ways. They don't need to offer up any actual, expositional statement, really, to explain why young Raoul Skywalker and Felicia Solo are wielding yellow & purple sabers, anymore than they'd need to explain via exposition why they're not wearing brown bathrobes. If they're dressed more like Luke from ROTJ, that'll show that there may still be a "uniform" of sorts, but not the Tatooine Garb of the PT; if they're dressed more like Han, or Luke from Yavin IV or Bespin, or Lando, or whatever, that may show that (as many around here would like) anyone could potentially be a Jedi, no more uniforms, any new character we meet might surprise us by whipping out a saber & deflecting blaster bolts with it. Show, not tell.

Luke will probably sport a green blade still. Leia may or may not have a saber at all. Other Jedi might still opt for blue or green, but having the option open for at least yellow is enough to show us "things are different, now"... and with one of the protagonist Jedi sporting a yellow blade, that might also be a good symbolic choice--we don't know what their fate is. If it was blue, we might guess they'd be more like Obi-Wan or Anakin, and thus unsure...but blue's also kinda 'boring' now, after seeing so much of it in AOTC & ROTS (especially on Mustafar). Green might indicate following in Luke's footsteps. But yellow... maybe that could have us think it's all up in the air? Same with if a villain had a yellow blade. Maybe, unlike Dooku, it's a villain we don't know is a villain beforehand (meaning from casting onward, until they're actually revealed as a baddie in the movie itself--Dooku could've been a much more successful character if there was that ambiguity)

Sure. Why not? It'll be cool to see when they fight with a two bladed hilt and out springs a third from the middle to catch their opponent off guard - much like how Qui-Gon was when he died, minus the third blade strike of course.

Actually, that was the point I was making, as because you joked around in an earlier post about the floating light saber, I did not know as to if you were joking when you stated, "both of those sound way too silly to me, sorry." It's no mystery that because we are typing this stuff on a computer some of the meanings can be lost in translation. For instance, my post earlier wasn't meant to be a cynical comment, thus why I ended it with the words, "to each their own", in the paragraph that followed, as everyone has their own opinion, and you're entitled to yours, as am I.

I want to see a Sith with lightsaber claws. I also want to see a giant lightsaber that turns into a robot and fires lightsabers from an enormous gatlin gun. I'd also like to see a crazy Jedi who doesn't even get a lightsaber, just a handle. He makes his own buzzing and wooshing noises. He could be called Bar-Nee Fifa.
