I dont think they have good choreographers for the ST anyway. The fight in 7 was fine, but 8 was lazy choreographed. But I think it makes sense Rey swinging her lightsaber like this, she never learned it, I mean she trained hitting rocks when she was in Lukes hideout. Kylo at least had probably some basic skills learned at Lukes Academy. I hope Klyo survives, or the next generation of Jedi swings their lightsabers like lunatics around.
https://www.ibtimes.com.au/star-war...fighting-style-pays-homage-darth-maul-1448856 Rey is more at home with her quarterstaff fore sure. The GOT choreographer explains all the wild swinging with the swords, lol. But perhaps we'll see the Darth Maul connection and the evolution of Rey with her double-bladed Sith lightsaber or perhaps not.. only time( and spoilers) will tell.
Who will teach Rey how to wield a lightsaber between TLJ and TROS? To be honest, I thought John Boyega was the only actor in the ST who looked as if he could wield a lightsaber with any real competency.
so in Last Jedi is Rey's lightsaber more white than regularly, mostly like how in A New Hope the lightsabers seem more white than blue. Like that shot of Rey first igniting the saber on Ach-To is really white.
I don't know, who taught Luke how to do this from ANH up to ROTJ? I didn't really see anything that made John Boyega stand out in that regard. Daisy Ridley obviously was told to fight with the lightsaber like it was a staff (in TFA that is), because her character used to fight/defend herself with a staff up until that point. It was oddly reminiscent of Palpatine's style in ROTS. She seemed to do just fine with all that stuff in TLJ. Adam Driver didn't really do anything that would suggest to me that there was anything bad about his handling of the weapon. His character didn't exactly have a perfected style, but then again, why would he? It's not like there was a lot of lightsaber-combat going on during all this time. He also has an uneven temper that impacts his capabilities. Against Finn and Rey he was badly wounded and arrogant, not thinking there was anyone who could threaten him. Against "Luke" he was just out of his mind, similarly to how Luke was fighting against Vader in ROTJ after Vader mentioned Leia. The two fighting against the guards looked just fine in that regard.
My favorite answer (published in old official SW material) is that Vader did. In an article of Star Wars Insider, an article titled Fightsaber discussed the different forms of lightsaber combat as elaborated in PT material. It posited that Luke learned his particular style of dueling on the fly while it was being used against him!
Well, Rey is introduced as being pretty competent with a staff. So her picking up lightsaber combat easily makes sense to me. And on that thought I do think Rey should have a duel lightsaber, it would be a shame if the last film doesn’t do something with that. And in general I would say the ST has been sub par on the lightsaber combat choreography. Though I really liked the fight at the end of TFA.
I really like the TFA duel as well, in part because it's wild/amateurish choreography fits perfectly for two young Force users who are only at the beginning of their training. My initial impression was that it looked kind of like two kids fighting in their backyard, which fit nicely into the theory that Rey and Kylo were siblings. In TROS though I'd prefer to see a more elegant, intense choreography like from the PT.
yeah the wild/amateurish aspect really works well. Especially for Kylo, it’s even apparent in TLJ in that gif of him attacking Luke. I’ve always had this impression that Kylo is just not very good at tapping into the force, unless he gives into his rage and anger, and I like that it’s visible in his lightsaber skills, or lack of skill, lol. also, back to just general thoughts on lightsaber combat, I wish that a few of Luke’s academy students had survived the Kylo massacre. Then maybe we could of expected more lightsaber combat in general. Like maybe it could of been a whole side story/subplot. In addition to Rey, these two or three surviving students could have been searching for Luke. And then in TLJ they all come together on Luke’s island. And so by the middle movie we would have had more of a start to a new Jedi Order, and more potential for lightsaber combat between them and the KOR or whatever.
CTHD had a very Star Wars feel to it, as Jen and Jade Fox had a very Sith-like relationship. Even the name Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon can be seen as Darth Maul and Darth Sidious, or possibly even Darth Vader.
There is an image from a deleted scene of Yoda teaching Luke how to use a lightsaber from ESB. Unused onscreen for whatever reason but at least the thought was there that part of Luke's time on Dagobah was dedicated to lightsaber instruction. Luke's time with Rey doesn't afford any such teaching so maybe there was a deleted scene of Rey being taught by a nun.
There is also the deleted scene of Yoda tossing the piece of metal in the air and Luke slashing it in midair. There was definitely lightsaber training.
I think a scene of Luke and Rey lightsaber training would have been really great. Rey seems fine with a staff and all, but Luke totally owns Kylo during the Crait encounter without hardly trying. So it’s pretty clear Luke has something to offer in regards to lightsaber combat.
TBH, Luke doing ANY kind of real training beyond lectures would have been a vast improvement. I find myself more frustrated that the film was so insistent on keeping Rey as a strict sword fighter, when a saber staff would have been a unique change of pace in a protagonist, force Luke to create a teaching method for a totally different style of combat and allowed Rey a chance to do something really cool, such as... building her own lightsaber, just as all other Jedi learn to do. It would also have added to her lethality and skill in the throne room scene, as this is a weapon that we've seen can be troublesome even for trained Jedi. And suddenly, you've got Rey taking on 3-4 guards at once effectively, because that saber staff makes it very hard for any other weapons to get an opening. Attack from the front, she's got you, attack from the rear or the side, she's still catching you and could also take you out.
The saberstaff is a good weapon for combating groups so yeah, you definitely have a point there. That's why her not having a master-student relationship with Luke was pretty lame as it could have showed a bunch of other stuff we may not have seen with Luke's training under Yoda to utilize her own weapon proficiencies.
Much like Rey and her powers in TFA. Remember, Luke learned to deflect laser blasts, while blind, from a remote in only a few minutes, and all Ben told him to do was to "feel the Force flowing through him", "let go your conscious self and act on instinct", and "Stretch out with your feelings." What people are missing is that the lightsaber wielder is aided by the Force, which guides his or her strokes. The lightsaber is just a tool, which is why Han was able to use it to cut open a taun-taun. What Han wouldn't be able to do would be to block laser blasts, because that requires Force use.
