Three random older skits I've been rewatching all week (the pirate skit I always remembered is fantastic then finally searched for it)

This week's was kinda a whiff. Not terrible, but some very vanilla bits. Basically broke down to the Cold Open, Weekend Update (and you gotta love how Sarah turned the owl bit into a backdoor Colin roast), Please Don't Destroy (surprisingly), the Murder Detective (though I wish that one had a stronger ending) and the Tiny Desk Concert (which had an insane amount of stage decoration going on there). Everything else was "kinda ok" at best.

Unrelated, but found this neat map image of Studio 8H from 10 years ago that shows how the different stages are laid out, and how they'll layer sketches in front of others to maximize the space:

I agree the episode was weak but I remember probably laughing here and there but at this point my memory of them has already begun to fade. The only reason I know who Ramy Youssef was was from recently watching "Poor Things". I don't recall seeing or hearing about him prior. It's odd that he didn't introduce himself in his monologue. I feel most people do, even the most famous of people.

The map is really cool. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I was unfamiliar with him too. And I've seen Poor Things! ;) But he seems like a pleasant enough comedian, but very "safe".

Murder Detective didn't get much pop from the studio audience but that's probably because the glasses closeup would play better on TV

Holy cats, that Jumanji skit just jumped into top 3 of the season

It's a good one. Also, weird coincidence that this hits the same week as the Motendo episode of X-Men '97, where characters get Jumanji'd.

Wiig episode had a lot of star power but overall didn't shine as bright as I thought it would
    • March madness cold open: okay
    • Monologue: celebrity cameos made it hilarious and kind of put Wiig on the back burner, not sure why they trivialized the 5 timers club, but oh well
    • Ticket to ride Jumanji: okay, a little too over the top
    • Pilates movie spoof (pre-recorded): didn't get it
    • Mad men type sketch: physical gags almost saved it but wasn't great
    • Retirement sketch: some good but mostly a miss
    • Raye song 1: okay, not great, I liked the orchestra
    • Weekend update: mostly hits as expected. Earthquake vs eclipse was clever but not super funny. Aunt Linda was great.
    • Go cart: hilarious, the reveal of daughter / the birthday girl made me lose it
    • Raye song 2: not great . Scatting isn't really my cup of tea. Wasn't sure if this was all one song or two/three different songs
    • PBS France sketch: made me chuckle for it's absurdity.
    Disappointing:
No Target Lady sketch after teasing it with promos
No MacGruber even though Will Forte was there
No Californians even though Fred Armisen was there
    No Gilly
    No Denise (doll hands)
    No Surprise Sue

I thought MacGruber was a given but Forte's appearances were gold. "Joseph Hussein Biden!" I always love his speech guy and haunted train conductor was fab.

I thought it was a pretty good episode almost end to end. But for the same reason that Tony didn't like: no returning Wiig characters outside of Update. While I don't mind Target lady, and find Wiig to immensely talented, I found most of her recurring characters incredibly annoying and rarely found those skits funny (especially Gilly- oh my god, especially Gilly).

And by avoiding bringing those annoying characters back to keep her stuck in unfunny nostalgia callback sketches, it allowed her to actually be funny in original roles instead, and the episode greatly benefited from it. Maybe not a break-out hilarious episode, but it had an even consistency to it that SNL rarely hits. Cold Open was the only real miss.

Great: Jumanji, Retirement Party (Joe HUSSEIN Biden), Update Earthquake
Good: Monologue (Martin breaking Lorne!), Secretaries (due to malfunctioning props and some of the gags), Go-Karts
Ok: Pilates (amusingly weird mash-up that probably hits harder for women than men, I would assume), Update Linda ("Seth!"), Le Maison Du Bang!
    Not Good: Cold Open

@TiniTinyTony Most likely, they trivialized the 5-timers Club a bit because when they first did the skit with Tom Hanks back in December 1990, the only members of the 5 timers Club were besides Hanks:

    Steve Martin
    Elliot Gould
Candice Bergen (who just joined the previous May)
    Paul Simon

And Paul Simon wasn't even technically a true five-timer because he only hosted the show, I believe, four times, but he was on so often, whether as a special guest or the musical star, they made him one anyway.

With now the list approaching 30, it doesn't have the same "exclusiveness" it once did hence why I think they were poking fun at it a bit.

Several years ago, I took the NBC tour at 30 Rock. I was surprised at how small 8-H looked in person, compared to on TV. Which shouldn't have surprised me at all, given how I've been working in TV for decades and am used to the differences in views.

Sometimes the BTS or promo gags that show the space manage to convey how small it is and it really hits you (especially if you've been in certain types of NYC buildings, let alone stages). But it's easy to shoot around and fake the impression of a larger space, depending on lends, if the forward floor audience area is cleared of seats, etc.

No OJ jokes unfortunately but Gosling's return was overall very funny (lots of giggle breaks!) And we almost had the return of Papyrus guy! But it was almost 7 minutes so that probably a main reason it was cut for time. Still can watch it anyway though!

Really great episode with Ryan Gosling. Everyone broke all the time which made some sketches even funnier.

The Engagement was a highlight. The weakest one was the Erin Brockovich bit as I never saw the movie but still kind of funny without knowing the source material.

Just saw there were 2 OJ jokes in Update, I missed about 2 minutes in live broadcast. Also I need to complain again about Global SNL on demand which cuts all musical numbers, not only the guest but skits so since there was singing in the monologue it isn't in the OnDemand version and YouTube uploads are region locked for 2 years so only way I could watch Papyrus 2 was squeezed into IG reel

The Beavis and Butthead sketch is all I've watched so far, but man was it funny. That one plays almost like the breaks were the entire point.

They should have snuck Daria in the audience, without drawing attention to her.

Yeah, I've never seen a skit break so many cast members, and break one so hard. Especially Heidi, who almost never breaks. She has an interview with Vulture about the sketch, and her thoughts/reaction to her breaking.

One of the benefits of watching the YouTube uploads is, besides the cut-for-time sketches, they also sometimes upload the dress rehersal versions of a skit instead of the aired version if they end up being better. In this case, the Doctor sketch is apparently the DR version (abbreviation a coincidence!) where they have the wheelchair accident included (which also broke a lot of people).

The episode as a whole was incredibly strong though. Gosling may giggle-break in almost everything, but it usually works from an honest place instead of being distracting, detracting or unprofessional. I don't know if I could pick a favorite between B&B, Get That Boy Back and Engagement (which had some lovely 90's-SNL vibes to the concept and execution).

The "Not Tonight" sketch is probably the only weak one in the whole episode (Erin Brokovich was only ok, but had some funny moments- but this one didn't really land for me). And I don't like country music much at all, but even the bluesy, Chris Cornell-ish vibe of Chris Stapleton's voice made for a decent musical guest (never heard of him before, so can't say if that's indicative of his style as a whole, or just this particular song, though).

Even the promo reel was good:

There was also an ok gag with the earlier "Ryan is hosting!" promo with him taking and wearing Stapleton's hat, but that video seems to have been taken down already. I'm guesisng because it used some of Stapleton's music underneath, and the music guest performance videos are taken down after a certain period of time (though usually a few weeks to a couple months vs only a week or so for that missing promo). It was still up Sat/Sun when I saw it, though.

It gives Debbie Downer a run for the cast breaking.

Yeah, I think that’s the only one to come close. Anything else is either Sanz messing with Fallon or Will Ferrell chaos-targeting someone else. Everything else is kinda hidden decently.

My guess is Heidi did not see them in full makeup, particularly Mikey Day as Butthead until it happened. She typically holds it together really well, as one of the few times I ever remembering her cracking was when the dish rolled around on the floor during the Chef Show skit when Nate hosted earlier this season:

Apparently, it gave her horrible anxiety, which I feel bad about since her absolutely losing it is one of the reasons why the skit was absolutely hilarious:

Apparently she did see the makeup before, cracked up then, and still did so later. Slight expressions, movements by Mikey changing it up did her in for good, it seems.
