Why was the sound of Luke's original lightsaber activation sound changed on the special edition ? Why was a scream added when luke falls down the stairs? Why was vader's scream changed? All these changes are small and insignificant changes that I don't see the purpose of

And why was the scream added when Luke falls down the stairs then removed in all later versions????

There's no change to any lightsaber activation sound. Luke's scream was only on the 1997 Special Edition and was removed ever since 2004. Vader's scream was changed to a grunt. Why? Because it sounds better and fits Lucas' preference.

prob. my favorite 45 minutes in all of SW. Just so epic. Changes don't really bother me, but they seem unnecessary.

I agree. Luke's scream as he rolls down the stairs really annoys me. There really does seem to have been an effort to shoehorn bits of dialogue and other noises in where they weren't really required. I get continually lambasted here by the usual suspects because I like to offer up the notion of "Less is more", because I really believe that in many cases. Movies are like any other art form, like painting and music There has to be light and shade, sound and silence. Sometimes, what is omitted is just as entertaining, informative and exciting as what is added.

For me, Luke rolling down the stairs in silence suggests concentration, nerve, controlling his fear, focus. It was a deliberate, tactical roll to evade Vader's blow. The scream makes it goofy and that Luke is all over the place. He isn't. He is holding it together at this point.

I agree with you. What gets confusing with the OT sound track is how many different versions were created for theatrical screning. Some of these 'changes' are actually restoring audio that was originally there on a different format.

Yes. Both with SW (ANH) and ESB two different audio mixes were created, including alterante dialogue tracks and sound effects. Those so-called "changes" we've seen over the years are just using one mix over the other, for various reasons.
    So much for the "OOT"...

So are most of these changes from a different theatrical audio mix?

Yes, some of the changes come from other audio mixes that showed in theaters but where not included in the audio track used for Home Video.

I was under the impression there was something like six to twelve different mixes for both Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. There was mono and stereo and then different mixes for specific sound systems and film gauges. So 70mm had it's own sound mix. There was a unique Dolby Mix. And then the theatrical releases also made changes. Like Aunt Beru's voice being re-dubbe.

That's not true. In the original 1980 audio mix, the sound was the same as it was throughout the entire film. Beginning with the 04 DVD edition, it was switched to the sound Luke's saber makes in ROTJ, but only when the duel begins.

What sound does it use now?

The bottom video is maybe more dramatic for Luke. But the top is more matter of fact. They both seem to fit.

Do the sabers in the film have their own unqiue sound do they?
