Howdy all, I'm very interested in trying my hand at making a Luminara Unduli style jedi costume. However, I have no idea where to start! Does anyone have any suggestions, or experience with her outfit? Fabric recommendations, thread, or patterns I could benefit from? Any help would be extremely appreciated!

I'd also be interested in information on just about any of the female jedi costumes, as I am not very partial to being a drag-jedi at my next convention. <_<

For what it's worth, there were at least two female jedi in the prequels that were dressed like the men. Adi Gallia and Bultar Swan.

Aside from Luminara, there were Jocasta Nu, Luminara's padawan Barriss Offee, and Aayla Secura who were female jedi not dressed like the men.

There's another member of the council, too...but I can't remember her name at the moment. She was in the funeral scene on Naboo. Deepa something, I think.

    Lisa
(who found pants for her costume today and is very happy)

I have a apnts and skirt version., Key to doing the pants is to find ones that are form fitting :D then you look like a girl. A paor of strech pants aor stirups work great. They'er form fitting, stay in the boots better and are more feminine then the others.

Hey, I made a Luminara Unduli costume for my girlfriend. Check it out:

    http://www.geocities.com/ugnaught7/jedi.jpg

So yeah. Some parts are spot-on accurate and awesome, some parts look good, but aren't exactly the way they are in the movie, but on the whole, I like the way it looks. If you like it, I can tell you how I made the parts you like.

Depa Billaba <sp?> was the other Jedi, and I do realize that there were actually quite a few femme jedi who were indistinguishable from the men in clothing. Thanks for the tip I'll remember that when I'm looking through my pattern options, Jauhzmynn. And Villie, that costume is awesome. :) I really like the head dress, I'd appreciate it if you could show me how you constructed it, the outer robe is nice as well. Did it have a hood? Because on the action figure I have Luminara has on the standard jedi robe (except with slits up the forearms) over the rest of her costume, and it has a hood despite her head-dress. I also liked the belt-thingy, I don't know what to call it *chuckle*, did you follow a pattern, or did you just eye-ball it from a photo?

ObiWannabe of the Rebel Legion just posted her Luminara Undulli costume on our site.
Having seen her costume in person I can tell you it is awesome. She is also a professional seamstressand really knows her stuff. I would talk to her if you need tips on this costume.

Thanks for the compliments. The robe was made by my mom from a black panne fabric, from a pattern with a few modifications (including adding a hood). I can't find the pattern number on the Simplicity website, so I don't know what it was. :( Sorry. If my mom still has the pattern, I can find out again.

The belt thing (which I ended up calling the "tapestry" lol) was a regular belt with a piece of black denim hanging from it, with iron-on graphics made on Photoshop. The medallion thing is a shallow salad plate with bits of plastic superglued to it and painted bronze.

For the actual design on the tapestry, there's one Lucas Select picture of a closeup of about a third of it. So I copied that and used that as a starting point and sorta made up the rest in Illustrator and Photoshop using the action figure as a guide (which isn't the easiest thing in the world). If they ever make a 12" doll of her, I'm DEFINATELY redoing it. Maybe in the raised leather the original was done in if I learn something about leather work.

The headdress is still confusing the hell outta me. What I made is in the right basic shape, but there's no way it's exactly the same. There's weird folds that I couldn't figure out how to make. But basically I made a rectangle into a bandana for the base, and for the rest I made sorta a trapezoid, folded over.

But at any rate, if you have any other questions, just ask.

Here's my Bariss Offee costume, as posted on RebelLegion.com
A friend in my base is working on the Luminara costume so we can troop together as a master/padawan pair :) I'm still looking for a better fabric for the cloak, but I think I've got the rest of the Bariss costume down pat (i.e. the shirt and skirt and belt (edits to belt not in pic)). I also need to get a lightsaber... when I get some $$$ of course. :)

Like.. Totally wow! Those costumes are all incredible! -- And I'm not just saying that to be nice! ^_^ Jedi Samantha, the robe you have for your costume is great, did you use a pattern? If you did, do you remember which one? Jedi_Toren, thanks for the recommendation! I'll message her when I get a chance, is she on the Fan Force as well as the Legion? Thanks, Villie for the explanation, I was absolutely confused by your explanation of the headpiece though, and I'm not sure what you mean by Lucas Select? Is that a website, program, or something? I'm not especially hip on all these new fangled doo-hickeys! <_< *lucky to be capable of typing* And Kjersti, your Barriss costume is majorly fab!! You look incredible in it, great tattoos. Did you draw those yourself, or use some other method? That applies to Jedi_Samantha as well, you both have really great costumes. I'm so jealous.. I'm probably going to sew my thumb to the fabric when I start! :D

The Lucas Selects were pictures from Episode 2 that were (supposedly) handpicked by George about 2 years before the movie came out. They showed a new one every Thursday for a year. Of course, it was almost impossible to tell what any of them were at the time, but looking back, one of them is a closeup of Luminara's dress. This is the URL:

Oh, cool, thanks Villie. Very helpful, I hope I'll be able to replicate the designs from the photo. :) And, Samantha, did you just copy the pattern from a photo? Hm, I seem more interested in Barris Offee now, than I do Luminara! Tsk, shame on me. <_< Thanks for all the help.

As a matter of fact I am around here. Well, technically. :) I didn't hear about this until Toren informed me via the Rebel Legion boards. Man, it's been a while since I've been here. It's lookin' kinda pretty. :)

Anyway. I'd be happy to offer tips on how I did mine. I got a special judges' award at FilmCon3 (along with my Padawan Barriss Offee) for the attention to detail on our costumes - David West Reynolds of "Visual Dictionary" fame was one of the judges, and he's seen the real costumes, so he swore he's never seen costumes that were so close to the originals.

The headdress did drive me crazy, because I could see physically what was going on but I couldn't make the object in my hands duplicate what I saw. I think I did fairly well, though. The belt accent is vinyl painted with acrylic paints, the vambraces are actual leather, and I've invested in theatrical quality creme makeup for both me and Barriss. I can post links to a friend's FilmCon pics, who got better photos of me and Barriss (aka Taish) than I even have. Taish has some from Halloween but I have yet to even see them.

    thanks...

i was having a hard time finding the right material and colour for the cloak so I am thinking instead of getting frustrated-as I do when i can't get it exact-I am going to base my ensemble off of Luminara... Going to go with as close as possible but with silver and black colours instead and personalize it some more...

Whoa, I kinda just forgot about my thread here! I'm so sorry, for all the nice people who posted here offering their assistance.

Obi-Wannabe, you're costume is great!! I feel so inadequate looking at your costume and the plans for mine. ;) I just can't believe the bracers you have! You did those yourself? And I too would love to see more photos of your costumes!!
