BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ROTFLMAO!!! That has to be the funniest thing I've read in a long time, Shelley! :D

And welcome, Huntbird, to the Mara Jade Hater Club.

It also doesn't help I'm a die hard Callista fan (please don't view that as a character flaw on my part!), so when they married Luke off to Mara...let's just say my wall has a small dent in it from me throwing VotF across my room.

Amen! I know that 95% of the EU fans out there hate Callista with a passion...although I could never figure out why. Callista wasn't perfect, but IMHO, Luke would've been much better off marrying her than the Red-Gold She-Devil.

I also wanted to add this, I love the fact that we know nothing about her past from before being the emperor's hand. mystery is an awesome thing and I honestly hope no authors spoil that!

I just saw this in the Mara Jade Bootlicker's Forum. Isn't this just silly? 'Hey, we know nothing about her for the first 25-30 years of her life! Isn't that greta!?! She's *sooo* >giggle< mysterious! In fact, it'd ruin her character if we learned anything more about her!'

I've heard this argument before- both about Mara, but mostly about Thrawn, 'No! It's his 2-dimensional nature that makes him intertesting!'

I would agree with this if done properly, like the Vorlons, or the Shadows or the Techno-Mages from Babylon 5- we knew next to nothing about them, and darn it, weren't they cool as a result? Yes, of course they were. But here, it falls apart. Maybe if we had some background for Jade, maybe she wouldn't be so completely reprehensible.

Actually, I agree with them on this, but for different reasons. I'm not interested in learning about Mara's past AT ALL! I could care less about it.

Thanks, although I didn't write that gem; it was Darth_Holliday. I wish I could write something that scathingly funny.

Okay I just finished both Rebel Stand and Rebel Dream last night and I have a few things to say.

Mara is still the same bitch.

I'm not surprised. She can scarcely be otherwise.

And Mara said in Rebirth that she would never be a mother like Leia and thats EXACTLY what she did. She left Ben with some people to go fight war. Maybe Mara will finally realize that Leia had NO CHOICE. I was glad to see that Jaina did (sorry to see that it was Mara who made her see like that).

I'm glad. It's about time that little snot-nosed brat Jaina grew up and quit idolizing Mara as the perfect mother, etc., while sniping at Leia. I hope this signals the end of the everyone-loves-Mara crap that's become especially prevalent in the NJO.

Mara won about 1/10000000000000000000000000 of a point with me when she said that there was no one she trusted to take care of Ben more except for Leia.

Wow, Mara actually said that? Perhaps she was thinking about how Ben shrieked and wailed when she held him but calmed down when Leia took him in SbS.

If this sort of stuff keeps up, I might be able to almost sort of not hate Mara quite so much.

Callista wasn't my fave either, but of the potential love interests for Luke in the EU, I'd have chosen either her or Gaeriel Captison.

Certainly not the red-gold pestilence. What did Luke do to deserve being yoked to her?

I really hope so, too, Shelley, but I'm not gonna be holding my breath. It amazes me that someone can actually idolize that wretched creature. What's there to idolize?! Her selfishness? Her cruel, condescending attitude toward others? Her everlasting red-gold hair? Her slim, voluptuous, perfect figure? Gag me.

I forgot about Gaeriel. I liked her character, too. She was actually the best choice for Luke, I think. Too bad she got axed in the Corellian Trilogy. How convenient, considering that the next books to follow the Corellian Trilogy are Zahn's SOTP and VOTF.

Which brings me to an off-topic question: what the hell ever happened to Gaeriel's daughter, Malinza? Didn't Luke promise that he'd take care of her? Or did he conveniently forget his promise after getting married to the witch? Wouldn't surprise me any. Do any of the post-Vector Prime books explain this?

What did Luke do to deserve being yoked to her?

I have no sympathy for him, since he brought it all upon himself. He's the one who asked her to marry him in the first place, the twerp. Just goes to show you how far the character of Luke has fallen since the movies. :(

It's a mystery to me, too. I guess we're supposed to look up to her because she's a "strong woman." IMO, she's some grotesque parody of a strong woman. What's wrong with combining strength with sensitivity and compassion, the way Leia does?

I also think we're supposed to idolize Mara because of her beauty, which the EU authors can't stop gushing about. And of course they downplay the competition (aka Leia): commenting on Leia's ageing and the gray in her hair (before her head was shaved in "Balance Point," that is--you know that no EU author would dare shave Mara's head), the unflattering way she's drawn in the comics as shapeless and unattractive, whereas Mara has legs up to here and boobs out to there and still looks like a 20-year-old even though she's actually older than Leia.

Well, so Mara is beautiful and ageless. Big deal. She's still a hateful shrew, and I don't care how good looking someone is--if they're nasty and insensitive, I don't want to be around them.

It was mentioned in BP; Luke financed her upbringing in a good home, or something like that.

Yeah, you're right, I'm confusing movie Luke with Luke in the EU, or LEUke.

I couldn't agree with you more. If Mara's supposed to be a "strong woman", then I'm the Queen of England.

When I think of strong SW women, I don't think of Mara Jade and her "sexy" body and "flowing reddish-gold" hair.

I think of Leia, who's gone through so much crap in both the movies AND the books. She's been tortured, humiliated, nearly DIED several times, forced to watch as the Empire destroyed her home, her family, and her friends, and yet she still manages to go on without taking a breath. I seriously doubt Mara would be able to survive HALF of what Leia's been through. Leia was able to survive having her legs almost ripped off. Mara would die of a heart attack if the Vong so much as messed up a single strand of her perfect hair.

And let's not forget Padmé, a TRUE example of a strong woman. She loses everything to the Trade Federation, and yet manages to win it all back. Like Leia, she's able to take control of every situation, no matter how bad it is. Not to mention that she ALSO suffers more than Mara ever has. In Episode III, she'll be forced to give up her son for the sake of the galaxy, something I doubt Mara would be able to do with her precious little Benny.

And then there's Beru and Shmi. Fans don't consider them to be "kewl", "gorgeous", or "kick-ass" like they do Mara, but IMO, they're much stronger women than Mara ever will be. Beru was a kind, gentle, loving woman who did her best to make Luke's situation as bearable as possible. You NEVER saw her put Luke down, or call him names, or bring up his past mistakes in his face. And Shmi was able to let her nine-year-old son go in order for him to have a better life. Plus, she was able to do something 26 men couldn't do: survive over a month of brutal torture at the hands of the Sand People, just so she could see her son again one last time. Do you think Mara would be able to endure such an ordeal? Hell no!

THESE are my ideas of "strong women". Not this arrogant, rotten, self-centered shrew who thinks only of herself, her hair, and her demon seed.

What's wrong with combining strength with sensitivity and compassion, the way Leia does?

Exactly! Leia can be scathing, too, but she's also caring and loving towards the people who matter to her the most. She is by far a better person than Mara will ever be.

I also think we're supposed to idolize Mara because of her beauty, which the EU authors can't stop gushing about.

Beauty is only in the eye of the beholder. Good looks mean crap if the person is ugly in the inside. Gee, sounds a lot like a certain red-haired, emerald-eyed "goddess", don't you think?

And of course they downplay the competition (aka Leia): commenting on Leia's ageing and the gray in her hair (before her head was shaved in "Balance Point," that is--you know that no EU author would dare shave Mara's head), the unflattering way she's drawn in the comics as shapeless and unattractive, whereas Mara has legs up to here and boobs out to there and still looks like a 20-year-old even though she's actually older than Leia.

IMO, Leia is far more beautiful than Mara. And I'm not just talking about her looks.

Well, so Mara is beautiful and ageless. Big deal. She's still a hateful shrew, and I don't care how good looking someone is--if they're nasty and insensitive, I don't want to be around them.

Perfectly said, Shelley! Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

It was mentioned in BP; Luke financed her upbringing in a good home, or something like that.

*GASP* I can't believe that was actually brought up! At last, continuity in this series!

Yeah, you're right, I'm confusing movie Luke with Luke in the EU, or LEUke.

The Luke in the movies would NEVER have asked the woman who had once been hellbent on destroying him to marry him. It's disgusting beyond words.

God, the last thing I want to read about is Mara's past before the "brainwashing".

I can picture it now: as a child, Mara was the prettiest, smartest, and strongest, and all the other kids looked up to her and drooled over her sexy body and gorgeous, shiny red hair. Then she'd become the Emperor's Hand, and we'd be expected to feel sorry for her when she's murdering innocent people left and right, because...SHE WAS BRAINWASHED! It wasn't her fault! And Vader, Palpatine, Tarkin, and every other bad guy in the Empire would drool over Mara's "beauty", and pine for her, and she'd sleep with over half of them (and people call Daala a slut!). She would consider herself perfect, and belittle everyone else, considering them beneath her, even Palpatine.

Then Palpatine would die, and we'd see Mara "suffer" and wallow in her own self-pity, now that she no longer has power and prestige and no more men to drool over her ageless figure. Oh, boo-hoo, let me shed some tears for this poor, misunderstood wench. Just one big, huge pity party for poor little Mara Jade. That selfish Luke! How dare he ruin her life by helping destroy the most evil man in the galaxy!

It would be written by Timothy "I'm a God" Zahn, and it would be titled It Wasn't My Fault!. Every two sentences would describe Mara's reddish-gold hair and emerald-green eyes. Palpatine, Vader, and Tarkin would all have cameos. Mara will be the center of everyone's universe. Mara fans would love it.

    Horrible!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Shelley first of all I want to thank you for posting that little bit on page 7. Funniest.thing.ever! :D

Secondly I myself have loathed Mara Jade since day one. I think everyone has pretty much covered the reasons as far as her over glorified self gets lifted up on some heavenly pedistal. It's so distressing. I see all the characters I've grown fond of from the movie getting slammed, beaten down, treated miserably, yet Lil Miss Mara get's all the special attention. She's such a boring character and anymore I dislike reading any scene with her in the NJO books. Quite frankly, I'm more content *skipping* them entirely.

Personally, I'd love to see Warmaster Tsavong Lah get a hold of her and skin her alive, then hang that scalp with those Red-Gold tresses up on his wall. Would make me feel worlds... no galaxies better knowing she'd be gone.

Applauds Tiershon_Fett and Shelley for blasting Mara Jaded.

I immediately disliked this character from the first time I encountered her in Zahn's works.

This nasty, arrogant and recalcitrant gorgon with spaghetti hair and radiation-green eyes (and I can say this because I actually HAVE auburn hair, not like Shannon Baksa who had to pose as a dye job!) seemed to me like Zahn's version of a bad joke.

A Force-flunky, The Jaded One didn't have the power or concentration to do much more then be a glorified errand-runner for Palpatine. Thrawn had her pegged, and good for him; he would certainly know. And so, since the universe "robbed" poor, poor Mara of her "rightful place," [real or imagined], she takes out her bratish attitude on everyone. Constantly.

I'm all for more female characters -- heros, villans, and people inbetween.

What I am NOT interested in are characters who have downright ugly personalities and attitudes, are arrogant when they have absolutely no reason to be, are nasty and viscious to other people, and self-righteous on top of it all. Not to mention she hasn't one ounce of compassion for anyone or anything, looks down her nose at every last person she encounters, and is laughable in her own deluded and inflated sense of self-importance.

And, of course, no female in Star Wars, save for Mon Mothma, perhaps, can be less then a supermodel beauty queen, and so now we have Mara Jade, the anorexic bimbo, flipping her hair around, as she wields a lightsaber.

Rolls eyes at that most improbable and anatomically unlikely scene.

Why is it that Mara Jade, who has the personality of a rancor, is so lauded as some kind of hero? How? Because she decides not to kill Luke and get all lovey-dovey with him instead? Because she gets pregnant and now is such a martyr of a mom to protect and defend the fetus she's carrying?

Come ON, folks. How did this grating, loud-mouthed bimbo get promoted to anything other then annoying side-kick? She's as bad as Han Solo, just female: full of herself, big-mouthed, selfish, rude, and a WHINER. She's a Mary Sue AND a fanboyz dreamchickie ala Lara Croft. 'Nuff said.

How Palpatine ever put up with her nonsense is a BIG mystery to me.

all i must say is that the old republic jedi are frowning upon the new jedi order. no wonder they are helpless against the vong, it is because the allow people who do not fit the jedi code to be jedi masters. if that witch had been in front of yoda (the only SW character fit to head a council NOT luke) and his council she would be dissmissed as a sith (or killed as a threat to the galaxy). i remeber the back of the JA (jedi apprentice) series's slogan it read "peace over anger; honour over hate; strength over fear". as i recall red-gold not-so-hot-girl possessess not these qualities. furthermore i do not see luke as fit to run a jedi council--if he continues this destructive selection of jedi masters/knights i think we will see a resurgence in the sith and a second fall of the so-called jedi. this i fear more than anything else.

...ya know, i think the thing that bothers me most about Mara, currently, as the NJO series unfolds, actually has more to do with the entire Luke-Mara "romance".. More specifically, it's the fact that EVERY chapter which Luke and Mara appear together in ends with Luke and Mara running off to make out somewhere..

At the very least, we get treated to a "Luke is getting a little...um...rowdy at the sight of Mara" line or three... You'd think a Jedi Master would be able to CONTROL those things called hormones....

On the upside, maybe Luke doesn't really love Mara for her mind.. He just loves her for the red-gold hair.. The second that starts to go grey, Luke'll be OUTTA THERE :)
