See, this is probably part of what made Mara such a great secret operative...she is so hard to pin down and can fit into so many molds that she has broken or created her own mold!

She's such a great character.

As I said, I'm still out on my interpretation of Mara and her past sexual history. I still think she might wrap a lot into sex=trust, but I can also see her as being the type who can disassociate (almost) body/mind/spirt and can focus on one at a time, if you will, when it is convient to her. She'd have to be able to do that to be an effective assassin, and yet still be able to reconcile that with the person she is now.

But I agree with you, JL...either way, her relationship with Luke is special.

 

Oh, I think our handsome farmboy would give Mara a run for her credits. I can picture him getting all masterful! They'd play nice and take turns being "boss."

 

Trace - I?m thinking somewhere between your A and B. I?ve never thought that Mara was sexually inexperienced pre-maritally, but I don?t see her as a frequent fling kinda girl, either.
I didn't think she was completely inexperienced, I'm just saying that is an option if you follow the B theory.

Personaly, I kinda agree with JadeLotus which is why I mentioned Kyle and Corran. I can just see her getting with them in a comfort sex type situation. For Kyle it would be after his brush with the Dark Side, needing to feel human again. For Corran it would be as a break in the angst and stress as he doesn't know what's going to happen and just needing that comfort and warmth.

I think that's what makes her (sexual) relationship with Luke so special. It's a physical intimate relationship based on trust, love and committment. That makes all of the difference.

Am I the only one who thinks that Mara was likely to have engaged in comfort sex with various random men (mixed with a little alcohol and dare I say it spice?)

Mara a spice addict? I got that fic about half finished on my harddrive. Too angsty and R rated for TFN though...

I think that she wouldn't get sexually involved with someone she would have to meet and work with very often. It would become really odd and she wouldn't get the respect she wants.

Just dropping in to thank you guys for the many awesome challenge responses. These stories are great.

 

Finished VOTF. Awesome book, wonderful story line. I was at lunch at work when I got to the part where Luke proposed to Mara and had to expalin to all what I was sighing over! Luckily my co-workers are highly understanding in my dorkiness.

Now as to Mara and love. It seems quite obvious that up until she touched and shared herself mentally with Luke, she had no idea that any kind of relationship could be that way. She says so herself and that is what brings to mind all that she has missed over the years. All that she wants, without ever knowing what it was.

I just love the 'I love you, Mara" phrase she picked for Luke to bring her out of the hibernation trance. Drove me crazy that the story went to another arc after not letting the reader know what it was till it went back to Luke/Mara a bit later.

I've now started I, Jedi which is good as I know more about Corran HOrn from the last couple books. What is the name of the third book in this current series?? SOTF, VOTF, & ????

I meant to comment on this earlier but got swamped at work. That is an excellent point, ginchy! There are many professions where people simply do what has to be done, no matter how unpleasant, and cope by either detaching from the reality or rationalizing the necessity. I can imagine Mara probably did both, depending on the situation.

Going back to the ?what is it you understand about Mara? question posed earlier: This is probably one way that I ?get? the character of Mara - because of my job (ICU nurse). People in my profession are often accused of having a ?sick sense of humor? or of being ?cold hearted.? And it?s true ? either you learn to laugh/detach or you go crazy ? it?s a defense mechanism.

This is where I could see a lot of Mara?s sarcasm and abrupt/gruff personality traits coming from. Contrary to opinions voiced elsewhere at the JC, I don?t believe that killing was something she necessarily enjoyed?it was, like Zam says in AOTC, ?just a job.?

And if you can detach from the act of assassination, then I can imagine it would be fairly easy to detach from the act of sex.

That?s probably one of those ?Where were you when?? moments for L/M fans. I remember it well ? I was sitting in the hallway at the bathroom door while my oldest daughter (who was 3 at the time) was taking a bath. I got to the proposal and promptly started cheering. My husband, who did not read the EU at the time, thought I had lost. my. mind.

Oh, I agree! I think the same was true for Luke. If you subscribe to the ?Force as an entity? point of view, I can see it pushing the two of them together with an Enough. Wasting. Time. attitude.

SotP and VotF are a duo. The next book you?ll want to read is Survivor?s Quest by Zahn, which takes place three years after VotF.
