It's not that big of an assumption. It is the epitome of logically deducing. Again with the caveat: unless all of the various filmmakers involved are all somehow completely terrible at telling stories. You do not spend an entire film hyping up an absent character, making the focus of both sides to find and reach this character... and then have that character do nothing once they reach him. Anyone who desperately wants to hold on to an utterly illogical & irrational level of pessimism is welcome to do so. Just leave me out of the conversation.

+1. He's obviously in episode 8 as well, so he's gotta do something in that film.

Sure, there would be a lot of monotony in building a new Jedi Order, but they don't have to show bean-counting and can just focus on the broad strokes. They showed the Empire's creation, and that would have involved freakin' accountants!

Well, we will likely part of Rey's training, yes,,but as I've said before, just training one person doesn't mean that he has rebuilt the order. If that were true, then Yoda rebuilt the order already, because he taught one student... Luke.

We don't know how far along Rey's training will be when we see her in episide Viii either. She may already have nearly finished.

I would have preferred it if we would have seen that Luke had already successfully trained 6 to 12 apprentices in the 30 years between films frankly. That would have been a better "gesture" for this Luke fan.

But how useful to the galaxy as a whole would a few Jedi be? In the grand scheme of things? The GFFA is huge! There are countless star systems in it. Might as well not continue having Jedi in the galaxy if you're only going to have a handful.

They haven't hyped anything about the character himself in the story, just the lightsaber.

I hope there will be more than a few, but it will be decentralised and more based on the individual. so basically, luke himself will only work with a few jedi, but there will be more out there. that's sort of how I always imagined the jedi. there won't be a jedi order as a political entity.

The last part is right but you need at least a few dozen Jedi to deal with all the major galactic concerns . diplomats , healers , warriors etc

I'd rather have Luke crippled than just having him play cameo in all three films. I hope he gets a sizeable role at least in the second and third film if he really does have as little screen-time in TFA as the rumors say.

Be honest with me, here. Are you just trolling?

JJ Abrams... he is the director and one of the writers... said that he was not on board to work on the film until the entire premise of the film was described to him by the producer as "Who is Luke Skywalker?". Not, "What is Luke's lightsaber?". Even the toy of Kylo Ren is programmed to say that his plan is to kill the last of the Jedi. The same rumor sources which you use to fuel your relentless crusade to make everyone miserable on here has explicitly said that Kylo Ren stops caring about the lightsaber when he finds another way to reach his goal. What goal? Well, we have officially released dialogue where he says he will kill the last of the Jedi. I don't know if you realize this, but the film ENDS... reaches its RESOLUTION... achieves its storytelling GOAL... when Rey finally reaches Luke. Because, reaching Luke Skywalker is the entire point of the film. And, in case you haven't heard yet... they are already filming scenes of LUKE for other Star Wars films. Seriously, quit trying so hard with the completely baseless repetitive naysaying.

Again, you are making stuff up to help you justify your angst. No rumor anywhere has tried to say that Rey is going to re-build the Jedi Order. That is the tantrum-filled twist on the rumored ending that is widely believed where Rey goes to Luke at the end. Nothing has EVER hinted that Luke disappears and Rey is left to rebuild the Order.

None of that at all implies he will be seen restarting the Jedi Order. The ending isn't Maz, Finn and Rey go meet Luke. It's just Rey and as others have said, if all Luke does is train Rey then it would've been preferable to actually see Luke with a functioning order of some kind that he did off screen. It is a huge assumption to say that we will actually see Luke establish a new order ON SCREEN in this trilogy. More likely that we see him train Rey who will eventually do it.

Is it crucial to Luke's arc for him to rebuild a new order? I thought Yoda just told him to pass on his teachings? Whether that be one person, or a handful of force sensitives.

Attention, All 5-6 of our resident "So angry about this films' interpretation of events that I cannot even think clearly" Luke fans: Based on the same exact rumor sources which have fueled your blinding disappointment, there are clearly discernible facts which point to Luke having an increased role in Episode VIII, if not also Episode IX... and the staff of this site are all fully aware that you have been informed of this information.

Keep this in mind the next time you are tempted to use hyperbole in order to express your dissatisfaction with Luke's limited screentime in this one, single film. We have rules against posting knowingly false information and we will hold the lot of you accountable for breaking that rule the next time you exaggerate the information about Luke that is accessible. The emo-spamming is going to end.

If there is to be a re-established order, I really don't think Luke would care who gets the credit. Why do the fans?

If, when all is said and done, Luke is shown to be the one ember that kept the flame from completely dying all those years that would be enough for me.

It's not easy to hang on with that weight on your shoulders, I'd imagine. In some ways perserverance, compassion, selflessness and determination count for more than double backflips and twirling glowsticks.

the point is if Luke passes on to Rey and Rey passes on to one new student it is fine, but if Rey starts a new order/academy that was supposed to be done by Luke, it will just feel very disappointing. [face_sigh]

It wasn't SUPPOSED to be done by Luke. Yoda said "pass on what you have learned". That is all.

Not much is actually crucial, but then you wonder why even bother bringing this character back just to have him play the exact same role that we've already seen in the previous trilogy.

Why don't you attempt to save being disappointed until this potentially disappointing thing actually occurs? Because, you may just end up surprised when you find out it does not occur and you spent all of this time being distraught for no reason. [face_dancing]

Have a little faith in the people that George Lucas put his faith into.

Yeah, so it took him 30 years to train one Jedi successfully? Basically kills the importance of the character.
