There's always the possibility they could groom his beard/hair prior to filming, but I have to admit, his current appearance does fit in with the rumors of Luke having been missing/off on his own for quite sometime. It's very similar to Obi-Wan's look in ANH.

Its obvious now Mark has put a lot of effort into this (just as Carrie has) and it would be a major mistake and a massive opportunity missed if he doesn't have at least one epic lightsaber fight in the forth-coming films.

Yeah, I agree. I don't mind him taking the Obi Wan type mentor role, but he's gotta keep his fighting skills up since as far as we know, he may be the only Jedi in a galaxy that has groups and factions doesn't want to have a bunch of pestering Jedi gaining numbers.

Besides, it would be a waste if we never got to see Luke fight as a Jedi Master in the movies (since he just barely became a Jedi at the end of VI).

I think his hair/beard is running longer to help slim down his face a bit. Got to remember that whilst he has lost some weight, the camera tends to add it.

No, but Luke's styled himself after his first mentor. Just as Obi-wan did with Qui-gon.

Right. Just like Luke changed from his father to that.

Has Mark shot his stuff yet?

If no, I am thinking that they had him get all Grizzly Adams so that when time comes to shoot, they can let the makeup/costume crew cut his hair into the style that JJ wants. It's easier to remove and groom than to re-grow.

No idea, but he seems to have been in London for quite a while now, which I'm sure hasn't just involved a load of sightseeing ;) All we do know, and it came from Mark's own mouth, is that he wasn't on set when Harrison got injured.

I don't think he has to look 100% groomed. Obi-wan looked as he did because that was transitioning from ROTS to ANH. Ewan didn't have any information other than have a beard ready to go, when he showed up for makeup tests and costume fitting. The changes to his hair and beard were to match up with the idea of what a young Obi-wan would look like during the time when Anakin became Vader. Hamill doesn't have to work backwards, like Ewan did. So he can be a bit shaggy and still fit with the idea that Luke looks Obi-wan did.

Still looks too old to me.
either way i actually think people will be less disappointed by him than Fisher and Ford. No matter that people know that they are older, they're going to want the Han Solo of 30 years ago....and Ford is not that anymore.

Speak for yourself. I don't have a problem seeing these characters as older. I know what I'm signing up for. It's not like these people have been living in hiding for the past 30 years (ha ha, I swear that's not a Luke joke), I think we all know what we're getting.

Harrison Ford of 30 years ago was a ridiculously hot guy. No doubt. Now he's older. But it's not like he's turned into some withered raisin or anything. He's still an attractive guy (I'd do him). And Carrie looks really good, too. But I don't even care. it's not like I was ever going to mourn the loss of the metal bikini anyway. I've always liked Leia more for her strength and personality. Which I'm sure Carrie still can deliver. :)

I'm a fan from the 80's and can't wait to see my heroes 30 years older. I'm extremely curious and excited to see how life has been treating them in a galaxy far far away.

It is fine if Luke looks older, but he needs to look like Luke, not Mark Hamil

okay the pic above looks like a craggy Mark Hamil. Luke should not look THAT old. he should be well groomed and have youthfulness to him even now. Luke is only like 52 or 53. So he needs to look younger than 64

It seems as if you may have failed to notice that Mark is, with the exception of the badass Jedi Master beard, basically sporting his OT Luke Skywalker haircut again.

Also, you are being WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too picky. This was Mark in a public appearance, not Mark on set in makeup and wardrobe. And remind me how it is you know that the story won't explain why Luke might look the way he does.

im just saying he needs to look younger because he is freaking younger in the timeline of the film. Hamil has over 10 years on Luke. We dont need Luke looking old and playing a Kenobi role
