Yeah they had to do reconstructive surgery on his nose/face I believe, which I'm sure didn't help him in the aging process. But I think he looks great and I really do believe I am most excited to see Luke back, for some reason. I'm not sure why.

yeah if the muscles in your face get damaged it can change how you look severely. luckily they did a pretty good job on him.

I think the damage done to Mark's face in the accident has become wildly overblown.

Hmm, not really. He had a ton of reconstructive surgery on his nose. It was a serious car accident.

Yet Mark Hamill himself has said that it's all been greatly exaggerated.

Not really, if you read some of his interviews he said(when he saw his face)"oh my god, my career is over."

I think he may have downplayed how life threatening it was(depending on the version of the story). Not that his face didn't get seriously messed up.

That doesn't imply that the structural damage done to his face was anywhere near as considerable as legend has it. That is actually born out in the fact that Mark's accident happened before Star Wars was ever even released, and yet he visually looks completely like himself during all the interviews in 1977 surrounding the film. He never had any serious, extensive, major, looks altering reconstructive surgery done.

I am an actor. Trust me, if something happens to your face, that's your thought. Doesn't even matter if the actual structural damage is serious, or not. The doctor could tell you that it's all superficial, but if you look terrible, you're going to have that reaction.

No the accident was serious he almost died. But he looked fine after surgery. But there was some scars. You can't really notice it now that he's older. But in Jedi u could kinda see something happen.

Is any of this really relevant anymore? Mark is in Episode VII, and the general consensus is that he will do awesome. Can we get away from his facial scar, which seems to have taken over for his weight and age.

Did I check his appearance in a random shot, with too much make up, and an odd angle...from the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL?

Why would I when it's easy enough to check his appearance in an actual video showing what his face looked after this so called face altering, devastating accident:

That video above? Shot within months of the accident. The photo you posted is a promo shot for a special released 2 years after the accident.

My point is that people's faces age. It happens to everyone. We don't need to rewind back to some accident from the mid 70s to explain why Mark Hamill, a man in his 60s, looks well aged. It's likely because...he's a man in his 60s. And there ain't a damn thing wrong with that.

Anyone who had the great pleasure of growing up on the original trilogy, we don't care about Mark's age, weight, scars, whatever. We are just excited he's back, that's all that matters. That's he alive and well and can come back to the saga. So again anyone else that wants to diss my man Mark, THE DROID TORTURE ROOM IS YOUR PUNISHMENT!!!!!!:

You know, believe it or not, I don't know that I've commented on this photo yet.

Other than the obvious (that Mr. Hamill looks terrific here), let me just state how happy I am that the beard is back!

I really hope Mark keeps it for the film. If he wants to shave it off, I only ask that he wait for Episode 8. :)

I was hoping he'd start a few months prior to filming so it could be a big beard, but I'm guessing they're going for a smaller beard. Oh well, any beard is better than no beard.

I'm wondering if Mark will get another solid 2 or 3 weeks of beard-growth before he gets in front of the camera or that is how the beard is going to be?

For the record, Hamill Beard Speculation is a much cooler topic than age/weight/70s car accident plastic surgery.

    You said it! :D

Oh, and on that front, I was thinking the very same thing about the "couple more weeks" thing, too (but I'm a geek like that).

And on to my own speculation about the kind of "little details" which only geeks like me might notice (but which really make all the difference):

    - I sure hope they don't go half-hearted with things and instead make certain that Mark is given a proper looking lightsaber hilt to the one he had in Jedi.

    - Oh, and no black glove. He would've had that hand repaired by now, wouldn't he? I never got the pictures I'd see of Luke, years after the fact, still sporting that thing. :p

I'm down with the one black glove thing, if anything, it would be a visual reminder of his journey / the moment he had on DSII / kinda looks cool. Dunno why he wouldn't have bothered to get the skin on his cyber-hand replaced yet. Maybe he's been SO BUSY since ROTJ that he literally didn't even bother.
