I could very well see Luke's lightsaber being hidden on his person, so that during the scene when he fights the Knights of Ren it's a pleasant surprise to he audience when he takes it out. "Oh, he's going to fight these guys. He just Force-pushed that one off the cliff, is that how he's- OH MY GOD HIS LIGHTSABER!" If you have it on his belt in plain view, the audience is just going to be counting the minutes until he uses it.

Tbh, I don't really care if he uses his lightsaber in this movie or not, it's okay either way but the most probable outcome is that he's hiding it somewhere so he can reveal it in a dramatic moment.

Maybe he wears these black clothes during training and, there I say it, action.

He seems to be dressed all grey. The clothers are dirty as well. Therefore, if he leaves Ahch-To with Rey at the end of the movie, I think it is quite likely he will use a different costume.

Very good point. That doesn't mean Luke would never use his lightsaber again. He even retreives his lightsaber before he leaves the Death Star. If you look closely, you will even see that Luke has the lightsaber when he returns back to Endor. ;)

Luke's lightsaber could very well be hidden under his cloak. I am standing by my belief that Luke will wield his green lightsaber again. I agree with PymParticles that there could be a WOW moment, where Luke pulls out his lightsaber (that was hidden from the audience), and ignites it. And the audience goes nuts.

I have no doubt in my mind that would be THE show-stopper moment, and I just cannot believe that Disney is going to pass on doing it.

IMO, people read too much into Luke discarding his lightsaber. He thought the Death Star was going to blow at any moment. He though he was a dead man. The only way Palpatine wins is if Luke kills Vader, and without his saber, he can't do it. Period. The End. If he never intended on using it again, why did he take the time to pick up before leaving?

Every act of violence isn't of the Dark Side. The guy has to defend himself.

    I agree.

Over the years, among some of the more fringe fanbase, there's been this developing idea of Jedi masters being beyond lightsaber use. This is largely based off the fact that neither Palpatine nor Yoda wield light sabers in the OT. However Obi Wan and Vader absolutely do, and it's never shown to be a weapon unworthy of use by a master Force wielder.

The prequel trilogy, whether you like it or not, settles this matter. Both Yoda and Palpatine are presented for most of the PT in the same light as the OT; powerful, elder Force users who are not shown in combat mode. This changes in the final act of AOTC where we finally see that Yoda, IF pressed to use a saber, is awesome in power. The next film over we learn the same of Palpatine.

They are essentially the same characters. The only difference between the PT and OT is that there really was, from a purely story POV, zero reason to see either with a saber.

It makes logical sense for Luke to be the same. I have no doubt that Luke can wipe the floor as a duelist. The question is, will there be a need?

I've come to the off the wall conclusion that Luke's entire arm (not just his hand) is now artificial.

He'll reveal his lightsaber during a badass moment in the film, when he pulls it from a secret compartment in his arm.

Thus, the ST will introduce a new running gag.

Rather than every movie chopping off arms, every film will reveal a character with a now, different arm:

    TFA: C-3PO's red arm
VIII: Luke's entire arm revealed as artificial
    IX: ???????????

Though, a lightsaber is an important component of what makes a Jedi, or at least the kyber crystals which calls to their bearers and are invisible to everyone else. So I'm sure we'll see his lightsaber at some point.

Yeah He'll use his Blade hopefully. But with that said even Grand Master Yoda didn't always use his Lightsaber. I remember in some of the Legends novels that Yoda taught the younglings that you didn't always need a Blade to hold off an attack. Probably one of my favorite things I read was when he fended off an attack from Depa Billaba and Plo Koon. Two of the better Master's in combat at the time. Legends now, but it was still awesome.

So Luke may not need his Lightsaber to defend himself, which in a sense would make him even more intimidating if you think about it.

I'll love to see him taking Kylo's lightsager and deactivates it when he tries to attack him.

tbh Jason/MSW's info on Luke has been ever-changing and just tidbits that have been inferred.
it was initially 'dooku-esk' and black. now its just dirty and more grey.
the lightsaber was 'seen' and now its nowhere to be seen.
Luke is 'exploding huts', telling Rey to kill Kylo, and destroying the KoR.

these all seem so.... they dont seem to be set on certain information, and after every one of these 'news'/tid bits, its always followed up with 'there seems to be some contention with the info previously supplied'.
in short, i dont think MSW have conclusive evidence of anything atm in regard to Luke, and theyre being frank about it with the aforementioned 'there seems to be some contention' generally following up whatever they are supplying. this isnt TFA, where they seemed to have a lot more info (and to be fair, that was towards TFA release), so contextually we dont really have to take their rumours as gospel, at this stage.

for me, these rumours just dont line up and theres various reasons that have been well outlined already by different users on this forum.

but seeing as though it really is all we have atm, i try taking all of it with a grain of salt and try and focus on - not the inferred conclusions by MSW - but the actual things theyre saying that theyve seen/heard about - and then make your own ideas on how that can work based on TFA/the movies prior/supplementary material.

If Luke doesnt use his Light Saber, then i think this means we might see him advocating for Rey to not use 'hers' in the film either. this could push Rey and Luke into the 'weird' territory that Rian Johnson is supposedly bringing to the table, with Force-lessons and basically learning how to control the force/her own emotions (which as we saw at the conclusion of TFA, she needs to learn how to control them). Luke demonstrating this with a display of raw Force-power in defeating the KoR, could be something that could work.

    idk

There seems to be a logic disconnect in Luke not holding a lightsaber in a training scene with Rey = Luke never uses his lightsaber.

I think they're also basing it on his costume not having a lightsaber belt, but it's not like Luke would have been expecting to use his lightsaber on a regular basis out on Ahch-To. Plus keeping the lightsaber out of sight makes the first time he pulls it out (presumably during the KOR battle) that much more powerful.

    Exactly.

Yoda pull his from some side attachment beneath his robe.
Palpatine had his inside the sleeve of his Chancellor garb.

Yes. This. We appear to be talking about one shot of what could even be multiple training sequences. We've all heard about the never-finished lightsaber training sequence on Dagobah in ESB. We could even see that finally show up here, but just not in this one shot.

As for the lightsaber not being on Luke's belt, correct me if I am wrong. but we don't see a saber on Yoda's belt until he pulls it out in AOTC and ROTS. Obi-Wan -- I don't think -- had his in ANH until the cantina.

Listening to MSW podcast, they define Luke's look like homesless, not regal, like some fan arts have drawn him. He basically wears a dirty old grey tunic.

It will help creating a contrast for when he returns to the Jedi robes and takes care of that hair and that beard.
