Or not? He did write some great American novels, and created some memorable characters.

Who wouldn't want to go down the old river with Huck and Tom, and Becky Thatcher?

Funny guy, but no. I still vote Victor Hugo and after him, Steinbeck.

Twain is barely third rate. The top guys like Goethe, Holderlin, Dante and such are in a totally different league. Second rate guys like Thomas Mann or Henrik Ibsen are still WAY better than scribblers like Twain. Sorry to break the news to you uncultured fanboy types, but you're blind to art.

I like Steinbeck, Hemingway, Salinger, Orwell, Conrad, and Fitzgerald better.

I read Twain and threw up.

I guess I'm not a sucker for things written in a kind of style representative of the late 1800s/early early 1900s.

Now, Eliot on the other hand....

He's got everything- an amazing style, the references, and mystery inside his poetry... and I'm almost certain he's read just about every published work by mankind, but whatever...

I've only read one book of his, and I didn't like it. The writing was too hard to understand. :/
