Twenty-five years on from his debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul continues to fascinate fans. Whether it’s his look, his deadly agility, or evolution into underworld mastermind, Maul connects on a number of levels. And of course, there’s that lightsaber, still undeniably awesome.

So it’s little surprise — and welcome news, which StarWars.com is excited to reveal — that Palpatine’s Sith apprentice will be the focus of Marvel’s next gritty Black, White & Red tale. Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red will be a four-issue miniseries, each installment written and drawn by a different creative team.

Issue #1, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Stefano Raffaele, arrives April 25, and finds Darth Maul dispatched by Palpatine to investigate a prison ship that goes offline. The vessel, however, is transporting a group known as the Final Occultation, and horrors await. StarWars.com caught up with Percy to discuss all things Maul and this new enemy, and offer a first look at the issue’s covers. “At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi?” He’ll have to deal with the Final Occultation first.

Now that I am back into reading the comics. I am actually paying attention to releases again. I still need to read the Vader one though

Maybe Alan Moore was an uncredited ghost writer for this one? That was some weird stuff. Not in a bad way, I'm always down for some weirdness in my Star Wars, but whoa.
I wonder if this series will be a set of one-off stories, or if later issues are going to explain the Final Occultation and Sidious's connection to them. I almost want them to remain shadowy and mysterious, but at the same time I feel like there's a pretty wild backstory here that I want to know.

This was EXACTLY what I needed out of Star Wars at the moment because I’ve been feeling burnt out lately.

As someone said above it totally reminds me of the disturbing Alan Moore comic strips and opens up freakish avenues for future expanded universe stuff to cover

The “forces of the netherworld” as a separate faction from boring sith/dark siders is tantalizing

This... more of this... always this please!

They should do a really spooky black, white and red animated version series. Kinda visions like but darker and like this.
Guillermo del Toro directing, Alan Moore and Joe Schreiber co-writing...

Reading this felt like i could hear the music already and the voiceacting was great in this comic. Seriously!

I wonder where this series might go next? After Vader and Maul, will they cover other Darksiders/Sith? Palpatine himself? Or Kylo? Or even Plagueis?

I already can't wait for an entire Omnibus of this collected...

Is the Vader one worth picking up for $30?

It's fine, but in all honesty I'd wait on the purchase - a "normal" TPB edition of the Vader series is reported to be on the calendar for a December 3 release. You'll probably be able to save a bit of money (and bookshelf space).

Having bought three oversized paperbacks, I'd say no. The format tends to be too floppy in a way the standard trade is not.

It took me a few tries before I found a brick-and-mortar store that actually had a copy in decent enough condition to feel okay buying. Something about the format lends itself to damage seemingly before the book even hits the shelf. The oversized format does make the art look really good, but that's about the only pro I can muster for the format.

Marvel's Gallery and Oversized HCs work very well, all I can conclude is it's cost cutting.

Problem is - and Marvel has form for this - cutting production values on products rarely ever works well, especially on books.

Sure, some money is saved, but more is lost through lost sales when a reputation for putting out crappy quality books is gained.

I'm not really buying into the "final occult thing" it another faction with horror visions and distorted abilities that doesn't add anything. I have gotten use to the Marvel and DC stories and now some of the different upstart comic companies that are coming out with good stuff. Really digging the GI Joe Transformers thing.

naw Final Occultation fits right in and could be a part of the true sith (as Supernatural encounters described them )

Their leader's speech reminded me of Cronal's thoughts about Sorcerers of Rhand's philosophy in Shadows of Mindor.

That cult looked like the sith cultist on Exegol, perhaps Sidious wanted a similar power thats why he didn't destroy them and tried get that power so he could use on Exegol.

Perhaps Sidious used their ability to create Exegol cultists.

Maul controls his berserker rage and bloodlust at all times, he's a precision weapon of destruction with his own agenda. While Maul is loyal to the Sith , he's not so much towards his master, he's his own man and remains so at the end from even the dark magics and temptations of chaos. He uses his Sith training and discipline to bring order to chaos , he saves the galaxy from this chaos doom cult and from Sidious and his heretical desires to harness their power to his own diabolical ends. Have to really appreciate that Maul despite being unrelenting Dark Sider, he's not a maniac but righteous in his own anti-villain way.

One creature looks sorta like a starweird , the cult could be followers and emissaries of Abeloth had the EU still remained intact.

    Very good first entry.

Makes you wonder what other evils Maul was able to stop during his life.

I’m not sure if the Final Occultation thing is a story thread through the whole miniseries, but I sort of have the impression now that perhaps the madness of the cult is a catalyst of Maul’s attempt to dismantle Palpatine’s grand plan?

Well had they let him, Lucas would have him stop the biggest evil of them all, aka Disney, with his own Maul-centric ST... just saying! [face_whistling]

I didn't say he used the exact same occult, I think he might used that ability to make others his followers and turned them into Sith eternal instead.
