Well, I'm looking over the work I needed to complete before school starts and there is the need to write about which is the better form of society, Melting Pot (ex. United States) or Cultural Mosaic (ex. Canada). I've been able to come up with almost the same amount of pros and cons for both. Which do you think is a better form of society and why?

Edit: Title change at author's request...

I'm really not sure about this either. Being Canadian, I'm used to a cultural mosaic, but I really don't know if it's better than a melting pot. The cultural mosaic we have here does create problems, like tension between the different regions. We're not as united as our neighbours to the south.

Senate could definately help you on this one, just look for immigration restrictions pro/con type threads and they'll be full of reasons.

I think a Melting Pot is better, with that you get a little bit of everything.

I guess you would actually get either in both cases.

I think you get nothing. You get a culture that is a blend of all the cultures, and you cannot appreciate any one specific culture. One thing I like about the Canadian system is that you can travel to different areas and encounter completely different cultures that are not mixed. It's very nice. If it werne't for the unity issues, it would be perfect.

I always hated the term melting pot. I dont know why though. Maybe growing up in NYC I grew tired of constantly hearing that phrase.

citizen-tom, in reference to Canada, the term "cultural mosaic" is from the 1960's and is outdated. The correct term that is used now is "multiculturalism." ;)

    Multiculturalism, eh?

I always find it funny when an American talks like a Canadian. Our superior dialect is spreading. :p ;)

Multiculturalism is indeed the proper term, but that's a rather trivial issue.

The term "cultural mosaic" was deemed by the federal government to be politically incorrect; thus, it was dropped. It is seldom, if ever, used now officially. ;)

Good thing I didn't make this thread official . But anyways, if it's too un-pc I can have a mod edit it :)

Don't worry about it. It's not really all that offensive. It's not like you called us a bunch of tree-hugging, beaver-loving, beer-drinking, commie canucks. ;)

Negative. This is far from being a "rather trivial issue."

In 1970, to the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Press, Pierre Trudeau argued "Canada has often been called a mosaic but I prefer the image of a tapestry, with its many threads and colours, its beautiful shapes, its intricate subtlety. If you go behind a tapestry, all you see is a mass of complicated knots. We have tied ourselves in knots, you might say. Too many Canadians only look at the tapestry of Canada that way. But if they would see it as others do, they would see what a beautiful, harmonious thing it really is."

One year later, Trudeau's government initiated the formal adoption in 1971 of the Multiculturalism Policy and its attendant Canadian Multicultural Act. This is event is absolutely huge, as it enshrined Multiculturalism Policy into law for the first time, dropped the blunt image of the "cultural mosaic," and represented the foundation upon which race-relations in Canada are now based.

Good thing I didn't make this thread official . But anyways, if it's too un-pc I can have a mod edit it :)

I agree. However, if you want to keep referring to Canada (in contrast to the US) in this thread, it may be wise to change the title. ;)
