Just curious. How much would you be willing to pay for a customized metal lightsaber handle?

Depends what you mean by customized. Parks Sabers makes some excellent handles that aren't movie designs, and I was quite happy to pay $265 for the Fury. The blade is a nice bonus, too ;) Actually, just for the handle, $150 might have been about right, but having a glowing blade upps it a bit.

You have to be realistic about this kind of thing.

The cost of pure aluminum for a hilt is about $13 (CAN) a foot. So let's say you get 2 feet. Great... $26 bucks.

Now you have to pay for the machinists time. I would wager that without a computer controlled lathe and design it would take anywhere from 5 to 10 hours to actually machine a hilt... So multiply that by $20 to $30 an hour.

This analysis doesn't include machine cost overheads or tax.

Whether or not you are WILLING to pay for it, that's what they're worth.

Hmmm.. I have a relative who's a machinist. He'd be willing to make them for free for me, but anyone know where you could get plans for such a thing?

Well, a friend of mine makes wooden sabers the same way RLSA makes their sabers, and hes also selling a luke and yoda lightsaber.

Why are MR's more expensive now? E.g., the Dooku one used to be $299, now it's $349. ?[face_plain]

I had a local machinist make mine. Two for $200. Drew the plans up using CadStd (google it) It's freeware. Mine should have cost about $350 but the machinist was hungry for work and underestimated it. Oh, and that includes having them anodized. If you don't anodize them they turn your hands black. Otherwise you'll have to paint, coat them somehow to prevent it.

I made my first one the other day out of a steel pipe and some PVC. Oh, and some Chrome spraypaint. Cost me about 4 bucks minus the paint.

    Home Depot is your friend.

You could have been looking at the wrong type of Dooku saber. The Signiture Edition of the sabers, which includes both the saber and a plaque signed by the actor who played that character, is about 100 dollars, give or take a little, more than just the Limited Edition sabers. Or maybe demand is high and they jacked up the price.

My friend has a regular metal lathe. I made a drawing in Draw and sent it to him. He made it from that and it looked EXACTLY how I imagined it when he was done.

Unless I somehow come up with $300 to just throw away, there's no way in hell I will buy a parksaber or recommend to anyone else that they buy one. The price is just too much when I can have a hilt custom-made and converted to hold an EL blade for about half that.
