    George Lucas often receives a lot of negative feedback from fans and casual movie-goers alike due to his frequent changing to the Original Trilogy. I can't help but to see a simillar parallel to Michael Jackson. Let me explain:

    It is often brought up that Michael Jackson is addicted to cosmetic surgury. Though he denies it, many doctors agree that he has had numorous nose jobs as well a cheek implants, chin reconstruction, etc.

    However, Michael Jackson started as a young boy singing with the Jackson 5. He had flaws as far as appearance such as his big nose. He was still considered a great singer however. This can be compared to Star Wars in 1977. The movie had flaws in Lucas' eyes (bad Special effects) but it was considered a great movie.

    Michael Jackson went on the have a nose job before Thriller was released. The changes in his nose can be seen below.

    Jackson 5

    [image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000025RI.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg]
    Thriller

    Even after this nose job, he was still the same great performer he had always been. This is comparable the Lucas' first changes in A New Hope (such as removing the "force field" under the sand speeder). This is comparable to Michael continuing his cosmetic changes. He continued changing the way he looked and being changed in even more drastic ways. Lucas, as well, made ven more drastic changes such as the infamous Greedo-shooting-first and the Jabba the Hutt scene in A New Hope.

    Jackson keep having more and more cosmetic procedures pushing it even further. Lucas as well decided to change the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

    Eventually, Jackson became the girly white guy seen on the "Bad" cover:
    [image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000269M.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg]

    Lucas released the special edition of the original trilogy ten years after "Bad". Now, when Jackson released "Bad" he was still a decent singer and was fine to listen to, though his talent seemed to have deteriorated since "Thriller". But the new album was a hit and was fine to listen to. Just the same, the new Special Edition was a hit and was still good in quality, though not as good as the originals in the eyes of many fans.

    Jackson went a long time without recording a hit and when he released Invincible in 2001, the album bombed and nobody liked it.

    [image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005Q4JH.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg]

    Now, with the DVD release sporting even more changes as far as content is concerned, I hope that this is the final change Lucas makes. Jackson went from King of Pop to a freak because of these constant changes. With many fans thinking Lucas has already reached the "Bad" level (no pun intended), I hope Lucas realizes that if he keeps changing his movies, he will eventually turn them into crap.

    Lucas and Jackson both had the problem of super high expectations. Jackson wasn't pleased with the way he looked even though everyone loved his music. Lucas hates his special effects, even though everyone loves the movie. Both suffer from an addiction. An addiction to change.

    DamonD edit : Gave it a go, but not specifically about the OT in the end

    Wasn't there that rumor that Lucas originally wanted Michael Jackson to be Jar Jar? I'm serious; I thought I remember Ahmed Best say that one time. Anyone have a link to that?

    Okay, this is so odd I don't know what to do with it...I think Jackson's downtown in financial and critical success was more to do with the music than the amount of facial surgery he had done.

    You know this is funny. Cos I was thinking the exact same things of MJ and GL. [face_sick].

    But one of the main things that you didn't mention is this:

    Their private estates.

    George Lucas has his Skywalker Ranch, and Jackson his Never Neverland estate (although I believe he's selling it off now).

    Lucas' ranch is composed of several business-related facets, but of course, a lot of it is his own private space.

    So anyways, when I think of either one of them, I just think of some sad, lonely guy living in his own universe, apart from reality.

    I guess that's what money can do for you, if that's what you want it to do.

    :(

    Part of Michael Jackson's frequent surgery was due to lupus.

    For what it's worth.

    I CAN NOT see the effect of nose surgery on music art, but I CAN see the effect of FX and CGI in cinema history.

    Most of the people and fans prefere the OT to the Prequels, but lot of people and most of music addict agree to say that Bad or Dangerous are better and more interesting than Thriller.

    But dont forget that:

    - Lucas has changed the cinema history for ever.
    - MJ has changed the music history for ever.

    why? cause they are like they are. Genius.

    They have both set huge record and achievement, they are compared to their own work. They can still great after that without surpassing the first record or movie. Who has surpassed Thriller? Who has surpassed the OT?

    and most of the time media are not fair with MJ or Lucas, and people who cant think by themself, will have a stupid judgement. Sad but true.

    Thus proving you know absolutely NOTHING about George Lucas' life.

    Try avoiding generalising about people, after all, most people think SW fans live in their parents basements aand have no life...do we ?

    Okay, this is kinda funny, and spoofy (I hope) but if this is serious, its sad.

    First of all, we must look two facts, what we're changing, and why we're changing. Michal Jackson changed his own appearence, and Lucas changed his films, one is not the same as the other for obvious reasons.

    Two is the why, Jackson changed his appearence (aside from whatever disease he claimed to have) because he obviosuly had some serious mental and self loathing issues...

    Here is where I draw the line with the SE, and every other change Lucas will make...

    Lucas changes SW to give it an immortality, he changes it only with a shift in time, 97 was a time where the original print was almost gone forever, in the new release he's switching it to a DVD format, to keep it fresh and alive.

    He changes it, and updates it to give new viewers the visuals they've become acustom to... So they will enjoy SW like so many did in the past, never has Lucas changed something so major as a small trivial scene that had anything to do with the major plot...

    SW is "alive" in a sense, it HAS to change, less newer viewers will not become fans, and it will fade away into nothing but an old movie...

    Lucas also had so many limits when he was making the films, and now that the technology has caught up with his own imagination, is it right for us to cling to the movie that HE created, and put things that he has always wanted to be in it?

    If you don't like the changes, fine, that's your right, but some hate it so much that they're willing to hold on to dieing technology, and ageing VHS cassets.

    Sorry if I sound a little ranty, I just got swept up in the moment.

    Yeah right! :)

    This is a great thread. I too see the parallel of changing something over and over until it no longer looks good anymore. Sometimes when things are imperfect, they make up a more perfect "whole".

    Very interesting points.

    Michael Jackson could argue the same thing.

    Yes, but Star Wars isn't abusing little boys in the process. Jackson did warn us, though.
