    In the original script for
Star Wars: Episode VI | Return of the Jedi,
Lando Calrissian, Nien Nunb, and any Rebels on the Millenium Falcon were supposed to be killed when the debris from the exploding Deah Star caught up with the ship. Yes, that's what I said, the Millenium Falcon was originally written to be destroyed! What do you, yes, you, think about this?

This would fit better with Han's foreshadow of this being the last time he'd see her. But I am personally glad that the Falcon made it, without a scatch :)

im also glad it didnt get destroyed but it would have made more sense due to hans forshadowing. however the falcon did not escape without a scratch for a start it hit the roof inside the death star and must have been scratched when escaping the explosion

Yeah it was suppose to be destroyed, and Han with it. If I remember correctly, Harrison Ford asked GL to kill him off in ROTJ, or something to that effect.

Lando and the Falcon were never supposed to be blown up. You can read about it here.

Well let's see. It would have made the movie far more realistic. Many close friends are lost in war. I don't know. I think the saga needed to finish off in a moment of complete triumph like it did. I think if it was destroyed it would have made the ending far more bittersweet. SW is escapist entertainment. No one really wants to be depressed walking out of what was then the final SW movie.

I, yes, I think it would have made the celebration at the end impossible.

It would have made the Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker`s death less important.

P.S.: Killing the only black guy in the triology would have sound rasismic.

Edit: I´m not black ( just if you thought I would be, that is..... :) ).

Well, that artical form the official site spells it out clear enough. It just doesn't sound like something fitting with the style (of the 1950's "Flash Gordon" type serials) that GL has said he wanted the SW movies to be in.

Not to get into a whole "conspiracy theory" mentality, but I can believe that someone published a fake script (dated before GL even wrote ROTJ, there is your first clue)...instead of GL destroying the Falcon (the coolest ship in the galaxy) during the high point of the saga!

"SW is escapist entertainment. No one really wants to be depressed walking out of what was then the final SW movie."

You say "escapist" like it's always a bad thing! There is nothing wrong with GL writing a exciing, feel-good, adventure. If you want realistic and depressing...watch CNN for a couple hours.

No you just misinterpreted what I was saying. I love SW because it is so escapist. For those two hours watching any of the films I'm out of my dreary life in a GFFA tagging along with the adventures of Luke, Leia and Han. The Falcon being destroyed and losing a main character (both the ship and Lando) would maybe make the movie a little too "real". I don't want to be depressed walking out of the final chapter. It should end on the highest note possible.

Strange, I had a friend convinced exactly that was going to happen. But I was just tormnenting her because she had never seen the trilogy.

The Falcon was supposed to be destroyed in ROTJ killing Lando in the process. He was supposed to die a grand hero's death, which would've countered the triumph of the Death Star's destruction with a twinge of tragedy. Apparently, this was actually filmed and showed to test-audiences, but they thought it was a downer.

I would've probably liked it. I would've never seen it coming and am a sucker for a tragic ending. (I cried lie a baby at the end of "Saving Private Ryan".) I wonder if any of this alternate-ending to Jedi is lurking around somewhere.

It was never filmed. At the most, it may have been in an early version of the script, but it never made it into the final, shooting draft.

I think it was actually filmed and shown to test audiences. Check this link out There's a brief mention about it in the "What Went Wrong?" section. The guy seems to have done his homework, so I think it's true.

The thing is, I don't think any Star Wars movie has done Test Screenings. And the Official Site did de-bunk the rumor of it a couple years back, in their "Urban Legends" feature.

I dunno. On one hand, it would have made Han's line a little bit more sensical...But on the other, for a final movie in the saga, it makes sense that all the main heroes survive (though whether Lando is a main or secondary character is debatable). ROTJ's ending is already bittersweet enough.
