I believe it was always considered a "goof" - I'm certain I once saw an interview were Lucas said he knew next to nothing about science and just "par sec" sounded good.

I've seen science types bring it up - that par sec is a measurement of time, but distance.

However, the story of the Han's Kessel Run does actually give an explanation of how it isn't the "goof" it was thought to be - the Falcon is so fast that they were able to 12 par secs from the Maw, a shortcut or such, and thus broke the record

Chewie does fly the Falcon on his own several times - the escape from the Death Star Leia is in the cockpit but she is not navigating she is is tracking the TIE-Fighters, and Chewie flys solo at least once in the escape from Hoth before the reach the astroid field.

I would imagine that the Falcon needs two in the cockpit for optimal performance but a lone skilled pilot can easily manage.

Yes indeed. After all, there is the scene before the asteroid field where both Han and Chewie are in the main hold trying to repair the hyperdrive, leaving only Leia and Theepio in the cockpit.

It's a two man job in terms of efficient piloting. A full sized crew for the ship would arguably be five strong. Two pilots, two gunners and one engineer.

I had the Falcon manual (from Starlog) years ago.

Do you know how many bunks are on the Falcon?

Also, it is a freighter, but where is the cargo bay?

This is why I want the next three movies to show more of the ship.

I forget where I read it, but somebody once said that an earlier draft had Ben giving Han an incredulous look after the Kessel run comment, suggesting that Han was just blowing smoke and Ben knew this because the comment made no sense. I like that idea, because it adds to Han's character, but I'm not sure I buy, especially since I can't back it up with anything at all. :)

Probably just a goof on GL's part, but the retcon always felt silly and over-thought to me. shrug

No it was definitely an error on Lucas' part - he says so - Kenobi reaction is meant implied he doesn't fully believe Solo - over the years - over the years the "look" becomes Kenobi knowing Solo is full of it because of such a mistake

However, it doesn't make sense that an experienced space pilot doesn't know what a par sec is :)

Well...Lucas says a lot of things, from a certain point of view. ;) I agree with you, though.

Anyone read the Hand rumor here? It says that Solo is no longer flying the Falcon, which is like utter bull******************

    It's okay

I feel like Daisy will have it. There was a thing that looked like the falcons ramp on location in Abu Dhabi (could be seen in the leaked pics) and Daisy was there and Harrison wasn't...

I'm pretty sure we'll see Han and Chewie at the controls in ep7, just not initially...

Even if they don't start in the Falcon, I bet they end up in it.

The Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual is probably the best source for this sort of thing.

I count 3 bunks in the Crew Quarters, and 4 cargo bays (Forward Hold, Main Hold, Number 2 Hold, Number 3 Hold).

There's something that looks like it might be a bunk, on the wall, next to the holographic gaming table.

It's hard to be sure, but from looking at the TMZ pics, the Falcon may get a few tweaks, just like the X-Wing. Looks to me that it will be 'slimmer', much like some of McQuarrie's concept art portrays.

Diarrhoea colour? But seriously, that's kind of a dark colour, and the ships generally tend to be lighter in colour in order to help make them show up in the blackness of space. I wouldn't mind if it has a few subtle stripes or markings added, maybe signifying a change in owner or military markings, but nothing too crazy.

If Han sold the Falcon long ago, or gave it to his kid, he and Chewie will definitely get back into the cockpit. I can see them just being along for the ride at first, and they get into a sticky situation where Han just says "Move over!" and schools the young'uns with a few of his old tricks.

He's probably flying a star destroyer or something. Chances that he ends up flying the falcon by the end of the movie: 100%

Han and Chewie were really without the Falcon in Jedi. I'm sure the two will pilot the Falcon again in the film. It's probably in some cosmic junkyard and it is put back in commission and fixed up, or something. I wouldn't mind some modifications since ROTJ. Maybe a minor paint job. Or whatever.

A fair point. We never saw Han piloting the Falcon in ROTJ.

I'm guessing the kids have gone joy riding in it in the years prior to this :)

    Thank you.

I had the Starlog manual but cannot find it.

That is enough sleeping space for Han and Leia, Chewie and the children (I'm of the opinion that both Ridley and Driver are Solo children and that Driver is not a bad guy) - plus since the we've never actually seen much inside in the canon they could tweak it more.

It is the ultimate family camper van :)

I haven't looked at the photos (I'm going as spoiler free as possible) but that doesn't sound right - how can the ship be "slimmer"? How could it dimensions change?

    Like 'Go Fast Stripes'? :)

Because they're making a new Falcon model.

The old Falcon model from TESB was only 80 ft long - and there was a separate set for the Falcon's interior - result - the Falcon was "bigger on the inside".

We don't know what the proportions of the new Falcon model will be, yet.

I mean in regards to story continuity:) - the Falcon has to be the same size and shape as it was portrayed on screen

That's the thing - even as portrayed on screen in the OT, there was variance. The Falcon on the ground, next to some X-Wings, might be smaller relative to them, than the Falcon "in space" next to X-wings - because the full-sized prop was in fact undersized.

Estimates made of the Falcon's size in the shot where it's on a Star Destroyer's tower, put it as rather larger than 80 ft. Conservatively, it's more like 120 ft (some people estimated 180-odd ft - but that may be due to using the wrong Star Destroyer model as a basis - the ANH one has proportionally larger domes than the TESB one.

Now it being the same shape, I'd say, is more important - if it looks too flat, it becomes harder to believe that it's the same ship. Still, it could be justified as having undergone a refit.

I've never (consciously anyway) noticed any differences in the Falcon - but I'll concede to your better eye ;)

Of course, if I'm watching Episode VII for the first time and suddenly start thinking the the ship is skinner than it used to be then I'll be shaking my fist, crying "Damn your eyes, Iron_lord":_|

    ;)

We started to discuss this in the Devin thread but it was buried by the "hand" discussion. If we believe Devin and his sources, Han and Chewie fly another ship in the early part of the film before using the Falcon later. For some reason, Devin felt it would be a spoiler to say what ship they were flying, which seems to imply it is a ship we already know. Here are some possibilities I put forward.

If they are still rebels on the run or have reverted to their smuggling ways, they could be flying:

    1. The Imperial Shuttle from ROTJ
    2. An old Tie Bomber that thye have converted into a small freighter
    3. They may have gone back to Tatooine and retrieved Slave 1
    4. A blockade runner

If the Republic has been restored:
    5. President Leia's flagship.

Personally I think any of those first four choices would be really great. I loved the designs of all those ships and wouldn't mind spending a bit more time with Han and Chewie in the cockpit of one before we go "home" to the Falcon.

The Scorpio from season four of Blake's 7 was brown. Scorpio was also reminiscent of the Flacon, being a utilitarian freighter/salvage ship. It would be a nice tribute to have a brown Falcon.
