Have the impression that the changing of the NR capitals has been retconned out in favor of Coruscant being the capital planet until Hosnian Prime succeeds it for some reason(s).

It's mentioned in the season 2 episode of The Mandalorian, The Siege, that the current capital is Chandrila though.

Yes. But it's strange that in Season 3 it seems to be Coruscant again.

The New Republic Capitol is apparently supposed to rotate between different star systems. That is a very idyllic concept but in practice it must be a logistical nightmare - moving the entire galactic government every few years - surely many departments of the government would have a permanent home at one particular star system - Coruscant being the easiest since it no doubt has the infrastructure from the endless bureaucracy established in the waning years of the PT Republic and the Empire.
Maybe the Senate Captiol (distinction here being Captial City / Captiol Building) of the New Republic rotates but not the Departments of the Government itself, those being located in the historic Captial on Coruscant.

I really don't think whoever thought that idea up, whether it was Abrams or a writer or whomever, really thought it out, for the logistical reason you point out.

In medieval Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate required nobles to live in the capital every other year, and then return to their estates in the off years, and by design that was a huge drain on the finances of the nobles to have to do all that traveling and maintain multiple residences.

I mean, I can't imagine having the entire Senate move, having to erect Senate buildings, have all the Senators find suitable accommodations on each planet they move to, all of their entourages and aides, and the non-elected government officials, and to relocate security assets, etc. I wouldn't mind it if they retcon that into something more straight forward, like Coruscant was too much associated with the Empire to continue to serve as the capital, so they move it to Chandrila, then Thrawn attacks Chandrila and they move it to Hosnian Prime, or something like that. And then after the destruction of Hosnian Prime, they can move it again in the New Jedi Order film. But to rotate by design as though being the seat of the Galactic government was comparable to who gets to host the Olympics, it just seems like a bad system IMO.

Rotating capitals is stupid. There is a reason most countries have 1 capital some have technically a couple, I don’t know if any that rotate them though.

Coruscant was chosen as the capital of the republic for a reason.it’s very centralized and is likely the most populated planet in the galaxy. So if you want access to the most citizens Coruscant is a good place to be.

I don't think it’s ever said that Coruscant is the capital. It could simply be a main planet for galactic governance and military issues. Which would make sense, given how much governance infrastructure is already there.

They should move the capital for strategic reasons after Thrawn begins his campaign like when the Romans moved their capital to Ravenna because Rome was a target for attack.

I’m going to be that guy: they moved the capital from Rome to Milan. And then from Milan to Ravenna, because Ravenna was easier to defend than Milan. :)

That was Hosnian Prime, everybody’s other favorite instantly recognizable and entirely unique city planet.

I’m going to be that guy: technically it was called Mediolanum at the time but I wasn’t trying to give a whole history lesson. :)

Rotating capitals is not as stupid as you consider the entire separatist crisis was caused by central worlds not considering needs of outer rim worlds and focused on benefitting the Coruscanti more than anyone else. That was the source of conflict. Sure it doesn't seem like the most working system, but it's at least something to try to answer to the problems of the Old Republic. Capitals were still mostly in core worlds though...

There was no mention of Coruscant being capital, even though military seemed to have presence there though and there was a central command of some kind.

They need to write this carefully if we are meant to go from Thrawn becoming a Republic-engulfing threat and then begin leading into the era where the Republic somehow refuses to believe there are still potential militaristic threats and insist on not supporting Leia... of all people.

Oh god I didn’t even consider that Thrawn will come back and threaten the galaxy and then the New Republic will still do nothing to stop the rise of the First Order.

Are these shows then making the ST worse?

I think it’s pretty easy to do so.

Have basically all remaining imperial remnants join thrawn. They all die or surrender after thrawn inevitably dies. Thus the first order under Brendol Hux and Grand Admiral Rae Sloane be the only ones who don’t join thrawn and keep their hundreds of Star destroyers and their super Star destroyer to themselves. The new republic never learns about either of them and boom that is pretty good line up.

Having not watched Resistance past the first episode, I didn't realize that the senator that Hera argues with is the father of the main character from Resistance and is also senator of Hosnian Prime. And reading his Wookieepedia article, it seems like in Resistance, he is also very anti-war and considers the Resistance extremists.

I mean, if Thrawn invades the Republic and this guy takes the same stance twice, that's going to be really stupid.

Which is entirely apt for a character from Resistance. I'm guessing you figured that out from the first episode. If not, watch a couple more.

I thought there were some neat worldbuilding elements in Resistance, including the FO running a protection racket, which fleshed out otherwise nonexistent ST political dynamics. But since it now has a reputation as a total steaming pile of trash, it’s hard to see/ remember that.

Those same senators also ignored some very good points. Imperial Loyalists stole the hyperdrive core of an SSD and they had actionable intelligence on where they were because of the tracker Chopper put on the ship. You don't ignore that just because you are afraid it may kick off more fighting.

This is my central criticism of how the NR is being portrayed. There are so many easy ways of avoiding such simplistic stupidity. Portray the NR as mired in managing internal civil conflict, and therefore unable to operate effectively beyond its borders, etc. Instead, it’s just politicians saying dumb things (in private, so it’s not grandstanding) in the face of clear threats backed by clear evidence. They should have some political experts (or just Gilroy) polish the New Republic elements of the script.

Agree with this. This is one of my few criticisms with Ahsoka (and a major one with Mando); the New Republic simply isn't done well enough.

George Lucas did an exquisite job with the Prequels in portraying how while there are good forces within the Senate, they simply can't get around the bureaucratic red tape to get anything meaningful done. Something similar could, and should, be applied here; only perhaps with a shifted focus from "bureaucratic red tape" to the senators of the NR being inexperienced with this whole democracy thing after living under a dictatorship for more than two decades. Either that or a fight over resources. Like, for example, if Mon Mothma commits a task force to Seatos, a civil war on a planet one of the senators in that meeting represents, does not get the resources it needs to subdue the conflict.

There are many ways to do it instead of portraying literally every part of the NR as willfully ignorant.

And no before anyone says it the ST doesn’t set up the NR to be this stupid.
