I'm going to have to go with Rey for this. Ani and Luke, the respective central characters of the PT and ST, have to work to achieve their level of power and skill. They have both victories and setbacks before they each arrive at their big crisis points, showing one to be a deeply twisted villain (Ani) or a noble hero (Luke).
Rey, however, seems more skilled and powerful than either one from the very beginning. And it's largely been explained as, pretty much, "She's just that good." She's been hyped up to be the biggest hero of the saga, while Ani and Luke seem to have been downgraded to allow for this. However, I chalk this up to laziness on the part of the filmmakers, rather than the more politically-oriented theories that have been tossed around.
Then again, that's just my perception. Feel free to argue the point.

I feel like a lot of fan-favorites in the franchise are overrated/overhyped, but of the options available I voted for Leia. She's boring, hardly has any development at all, and I've never been a fan of the sister reveal or Han/Leia romance, and those things pretty much sum up the point of her as a character. Disney's attempts to prop her up while letting Luke and Han go by the wayside backfired to say the least, and I didn't care for young Leia and the "I'm so weirdly acute and brave for my age" vibe either.

I don't, and I'm afraid they'll have to explain this in a thoughtful five paragraph essay citing at least three sources.

My initial choice would be Maul. Don't get me wrong, I liked him in TPM, had a striking look/design and the lightsaber duel remains one of the best, if not the best, in all the franchise. Still have quite a few Maul action figures of various sizes from that time as well.

But then to revive him, resurrect him, rebuild him, add a brother, and then become Crime Lord Extraordaniare! just seems like too much from such humble beginnings as Sheev's Sith apprentice.

Until September 21st, Kylo Ren, even though I am not sure how large of a fanbase he has in reality. Badly written character, nothing special.

After September 21st, I am pretty confident that he will be surpassed by Cassian Andor, who is already very high on the list since 2016.

It's crazy just how much he was expanded and it was all made canon. It's still a big suspension of disbelief for that all to happen.

The choice to expand Maul so much was pretty shameless fan-pandering; but I can at least appreciate that they used him in limited ways. He wasn't brought to the forefront in canon and he wasn't brought into the Skywalker saga (though I'd rather he was than Palpatine...)

I continue to have problems with this premise. In RL people obtain power and wealth not through anything they did; rather merely through inheritance, which is nothing but sheer genetic luck. Which is equivalent to a character like Rey being genetically predisposed to being OP in the Force.

^That's one giant generalization and a poor excuse for lazy writing, IMO. Born privilege is a thing, sure, but that does not mean that anyone who's successful never had to work hard and learn and earn anything they have, including people born with advantages.

People can have natural talents, but there's a limit. And in terms of fiction, people tend to like protagonists who struggle, learn, and grow, as opposed to characters who are spouting out super powers and whatever skills that happen to be conveniently called for in the story (ie, Rey).

Both Ani and Luke are genetically predisposed to have superior Force-inspired abilities. But they have to learn how to use them and, even more important, why and when to use them. It's a process that takes them years, and is shown to be difficult. Rey just seems to know it all almost immediately. She seems to have to work very little to achieve their levels of ability. And, again, the explanation is, "She's just that good."
    Sorry if I'm a bit off-topic.

I have to go with Luke on this. I don't dislike the character, but I feel he gets way more credit that he deserves, thus he's "overrated." His big victory came in ANH when he blew up the Death Star. After that, he didn't really accomplish so much. In ESB, he failed his training and then got beaten up by Vader and had to rely on his friends to rescue him. In ROTJ, he had an absolutely absurd "plan" (if you can even call it that) to rescue Han, and sure, it worked, but it was needlessly convoluted and put more people at risk than was necessary. Then he avoided the major battle against the Empire and instead went to deal with a personal matter by confronting Vader. He again gets beaten up (this time by Palpatine), and has to rely on Vader to save him. Yet somehow, despite this poor showing, people still refer to him as one of the all-time greatest heroes and expected him to be an incredibly successful/powerful Jedi by the time the sequels came out. I'm not sure what that was based on, because what we saw of him in the OT really wasn't very promising: A Jedi school dropout who gets beaten up and relies on others to come to his rescue. Still a likable character, absolutely, but not deserving of all the praise he gets. Actually, even though some people say the ST disrespected him, I feel the ST gives him too much credit, treating him like a legend, when I don't think his accomplishments in the OT would really garner him that level of respect.

Eh, that's a rather downplayed look at Luke's achievements, IMO. He played a part in getting the DS plans to the Alliance, rescuing Leia, personally blew up the DS, led the aerial battle on Hoth, helped in the battle of Endor, played a role in the death of the Emperor, redeemed Vader, refused the dark side, and became the one and only Jedi. I'd say those are pretty big contributions.

Yes, he loses and fails at things too. Luke isn't a showboat of a character. He plays a crucial role in the fight against the Empire, but sometimes he needs help from others, and sometimes others need him. Seeing this in action is part of why we enjoy the OT gang in the first place. Or at least, why I do.

Not a character but the "even more powerful " Death Star II.

    It clearly wasn't.

It would have been - if it hadn't been blown up before completion - no Thermal Exhaust Port vulnerability, more rapid recharge rate. That's how Legends interpreted the "more powerful than the first" bit of the opening crawl, and it's a reasonable conjecture.

Who would've won: Sidious, Mace, or the Death Star II's primary laser at full operational power? Truly a question for the ages.

    DS2 clearly set DS1 up.

I'm absolutely astonished people can't see it

    it was a set up!

Edit: in all seriousness though, probably General Grievous, though I don't know many who like him, so...Yoda maybe?

But could DS2 have beaten DS?

I mean , yeah DS2 was bigger , but DS actually did the planet-killer thing , meanwhile DS2 had it's pants down while waiting to get ****ed.
