    Mountain featured in ?Lord of the Rings? erupts

    from news wire

    WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand?s Mount Ruapehu erupted, spewing out ash and rock that injured one climber and forced around 50 people to be evacuated off the mountain, local media reported on Wednesday. The 10-minute eruption started at about 8.20 p.m. on Tuesday and sent a cloud of ash and dust to a height of 15,000 feet, Geological and Nuclear Sciences said.

    Don't worry. They can clear everyone away from the area using Eagles.

    Eagles are very reliable.

    Ten minute eruption?

    That's better than a 45 minute ending.

    At first glance I thought this said "Moon erupts". That would be quite a sight.

    padluv, my natural disasters textbook last year had a story about a group of volcanologists who went on a day hike up a supposedly dormant volcano in south america. it described in vivid detail about how when they reached the summit, the volcano erupted, sending boulders and rocks in the air, smashing and killing several of the team members, and several others died from lava flow and deadly gases. it got so hot that of of the two survivors camera bag had actually melted into his skin. it was pretty gruesome.

    but hey, the chances that would happen to you are actually extremely remote. for the most part volcanoes are safe.

    Mount Doom was Ngauruhoe, a nearby but completely different mountain to Ruapehu.

    This is the hut the tramper was trapped in;

    Extremely lucky he and his companion weren't buried alive.

    In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Mount Doom was represented by Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu, both active volcanoes in New Zealand. In long shots the mountain is either a large model or a CGI effect, or a combination. It was not permitted to film the summit of Ngauruhoe because it is sacred to Maori of the region. However, some scenes on the slopes of Mount Doom were filmed on the slopes of another nearby volcano, Mount Ruapehu.
