What, are you kidding me? Those are pretty damned good names! Mysterious for the Silentium, and pretty descriptive for the Abominor. Kinda like Transformer names, actually.

The Abominor wage their battles to destroy the veiled forces of... the Silentium.

Silentium evolution is sort of a... transformation, an upgrade and reformatting... [face_laugh]

Abominor does sound kinda silly- like a 4th season Transformers name ;)

Silentium, though, I think is a pretty cool name. Sounds rather elegant, royal or noble. Conversely could also sound deadly in a stealthy-like-ninja kinda way.

It would perhaps be interesting to know if the Abominor themselves use that term or not.

If it was just a derogative label invented by either the Vong or the Silentium for the great planet eating abominations, then I wouldn't mind it at all.

That would then allow for the Abominor themselves either to think of themselves as "true Silentium" or just be something entirely different.

Does that mean we get to hear the phrase, "Silentium... transform!"

I've always said that's what Star Wars was missing... Robot Ninjas.

    I'd prefer:

    "SILENTIUM! MERGE TO FORM ABOMINOR!"

    Sorry. Transformers sets me off.

Hmm... they do play with their tentacles and later transform into giant spheres. :p

Speaking of their "growing" again... maybe that's what happens to Abominor? They fail to upgrade into a spherical perfect being, but instead in the process their processing breaks down and they begin to violate the Prime Law. By Prime Law I mean the Silentium's obsession with prime numbers.

Ergo, Abominor are those Silentium who have discovered that 2 + 2 can make 4! :p

Ridiculous as putting it that way sounds, I actually think it'd be rather funny if the two races were basically the same one, but that Abominor became destructive for something so banal as being unable to make sense of the obsession with prime numbers, it driving them insane. The Abominor would be like Silentium Shamed Ones.

You can't exactly blame them either. The Silentium's obsession is rather dumb. :p

Well, the Abominor are described as being made up of parts from other droids, so perhaps they sought to "grow" through the accumulation of other mechanical beings than through the more holistic and self-contained path of the Silentium?

    Interesting... [face_thinking]

That certainly does make them both rather polarised ideologically.

In a way, it bugs me that the One (Vuffi Raa's creator) is so big. It'd be nice if the Silentium were all the "small superweapon" sort (Sun Crusher style), and that it was just the Abominor who sought to grow and grow and grow until they were these Death Star sized planet devouring gigantic furnaces.

I suppose though that even "starship sized" (for the One) is still comparatively small compared to something moon sized like the Death Star. Perhaps the discovery of the number 2 (which is a prime number, I know, but it's still a root of most multiples :p) caused the Abominor to discover the world of multiplication and infinite growth. :p

Know what the sad part is?

This is a wonderful theory, and a great plot. It'd be awesome and grand and would even possibly get me buying SW novels again...

But there's no chance of it ever happening.

Or it could be they're just from Abominos, and the name is a coincidence.:p

See, I have always just put Cronal having being atomised in LSatSoM as having been an in-universe narrative fiction by Geptun designed to make the story more satisfying by giving the villain his comeuppance - so the reports of his activity post-Mindor can be easily explained thus.

Maybe they're getting a bad rap because of the name. Like if there was a guy named Bob Abominor, and people kept thinking horrible things about him.

    The chapter excerpt from ABYSS, that comes with the e-book SKYBORN, is very suggestive... Ben and Luke find what appears to be a miniature Centerpoint Station between two black holes in the Maw, which they think might have then been built by the same thing that built Centerpoint, a Killik-like hivemind or mindmeld they feel present when heading to the Mind Drinkers between these two black holes, a dark tentacle that tried to grab 2 year old Ben when he arrived in the Maw and feels betrayed as Ben leads Luke into the Maw now, as well as a zombie Jedi Duros that just launched a missile at the Jade Shadow in the middle of space without a helmet... WTH?!? ]-}

    Don't forget
How the Keshi remember and revere a war between the Skyborn and the Otherside, which apparently created their world

Not specifically related to our favorite droid races, but it certainly invokes their themes.

thinking about Kiliks as Builders for the Celestials made me think of the following scenario:

What if the Killiks built the Silentium/Abominor droids (th very first ones) for the Celestials, too?

And why did the Celestials need BUILDERS? because they can´t do it themselves because they reside behind blackholes in another dimension? so they communicate through the Force with this gffa world?
sounds very Otherspace or Waru-esque, I know

That's a rather interesting thought... the Silentium's creators may have been described as "star shaped", but maybe we've been taking that all wrong... maybe they were the stars, so now are inside the black holes? That's... an intriguing idea. [face_thinking]
Interesting... this also harks back to something I've been speculating since Outcast, about the abundance of references to black holes. Remember how Dorin is also between two black holes? Now, that might just be foreshadowing, or it might just be a very rare natural anomaly... but it still struck me as if Dorin might secretly have something even more sinister hidden deep beneath the surface. You know... like how Kessel was possibly the remains of a large planet once... and had a network of Centerpoint-type stuff holding it together deep underground? [face_whistling]

A tentacle though you said... hmmm.... like Vuffi Raa? [face_thinking]

You'd think they'd know their enemy better than Otherside. If you remember them so long ago, you'd think they'd the name. Yeah yeah, I know it's for reader intrigue. Still, irritating as those sword-stealing ornage bubbles from Zelda's 2ndQuest.

Prepare for the glorious return of starshaped WARU [face_whistling] and his Otherside/Otherspace Army of Charon Doom

Celestial Waru will purge this galaxy and use his obedient loyal Silentium slaves to get rid of the Abominor who betrayed him because they mimic him (in their adding human slaves and parts to themselves like Waru eats them to grow more powerful)
