Websters Dictionary defines "Onomatopoeia" as "formation of a word by using sounds that resemble or suggest the object or action to be named."

My favorite EU Onomatopoeia (if I understand the concept) is "Snap-hiss"!!!! That is the coolest! IMHO, it is the equivilent of Marvel's "snikt" of Wolverine or "thwipt" of Spider-Man!

Can anyone point me to the first author or novel that coint the word "snap-hiss"?

What is your favorite EU Onomatopoeia?????

    "Bling Bling"

    LOL

I'm not sure who coined snap-hiss but i think it was MAS, I think I remeber reading it in I, Jedi.

Timothy Zahn first wrote it in Heir to the Empire over a decade ago. It appeared at least six years before I, Jedi came out.

Yes, GoDV remains peerless in this respect. It single-handedly accounts for 99.999999% of all such occurrences within Star Wars.

There's just too many to decide on.

    I'm partial to "FWOOOOOP! CLIIICK!"

Nothing beats a fwoop with five "o's," or an extended "click." :)

znnn... how do you pronounce that?

    Fzzzzoooop Bedooooop

maybe their 'o' key kept getting stuck?

    Those are very good examples.

I wonder if there is a correlation to the number of Onomatopoeias in a novel and the novel's quality.

For instance, in the new "Traitor" (no spoilers) I find hardly any . . . unless this one counts, "please help me pleas aaaaAAAAAA---"

It wasn't just the "o's." The doors didn't just "SQUEE," they "SQUEEEEEEE...'ed"

And "z's." "Z's" are all over the place.

I think the Hutt's name was really going to be Jorba the Hutt, except the "z" key got stuck there instead.

Yeah, I was never really impressed with any of the Hutts' names. I mean . . . I can live with Jabba and perhaps Bogga, but Durga? Zorba?

Don't get me started on "Jango".

    But I digress . . .

This may not be Onomatopoeia, but I really get tired of "Jeedai". Why don't they just learn to pronounce it right ;)

    hey hey hey.

    stop dissing Traitor.

or else i'll set Matsadge loose on you.

i'm not joking; you'll end up looking just like one of the Vong when he's done with you, maybe worse.

as for the sounds, i prefer the CRUNCH of someone (anyone, really) getting force choked to death.

I'm sorry if you thought I was dissing Traitor. I loved that novel!

That post was a jest/joke anyway . . . but I do get tired of the Vong "Jeedai" stuff! who wouldn't? :)

Not sure but I believe snap-hiss originally appeared in the OT novelizations.

Personally, the snap-hiss of an activating lightsaber aside, the sound of blaster bolts being deflected by Kir Kanos's weapon is pretty cool.

Maybe if they ever did a film version of GoDV series, they could have Adam West play Luke Skywalker and Burt Ward play Ken. They we could replace the "BAM!", "POW", "ZAP" Onomatopoeias with they Genghis' examples. :p

I dunno why, but I really wanted to say that, in Vietnamese, the second syllable of "Dooku" translates into the portion of male anatomy that some refer to as their lightsaber...

That amused me for the longest time.

(This doesn't really belong here, but someone was griping about names....)
