Which is the better game in terms of graphics, dialogue, music and plot?

Also, can their expansion packs be played without the mother game, the way Brrod Wars can't be played without first Starcraft? Thanks.

I perfer NWN to pretty much every other RPG ever.

And yes, you need the main game to use the expansions.

Never played NWN, and I've heard it's good, but overall not bested by the Baldur's Gate series. I liked Morrowind, although at times its structure and gameplay sometimes bored me so much that I had to walk away from it for long periods of time. However, two years later and some of Morrowind's visuals still blow me away, and the main theme is hauntingly beautiful, although a bit repetitive. And yes, for both games the orginal is required in order to use the expansions.

Graphics: Morrowind.
Dialogue: Morrwind has almost none, same with Neverwinter Nights. I'll give Morrowind the edge because of some funny lines. "YOU N'WAH!" [face_laugh]
Music: Neverwinter Nights.
Plot: Morrowind, by a lot.

I love both games. If I want singleplayer RPGs, I play KotOR or Morrowind. If I want multiplayer RPGs, I play NWN. :D

They are two different beasts, imho. Morrowind is a single player game in a huge setting. NWN is really a multiplayer game with the single player campaigns meant to help the player a. get accustomed to the game b. show off what you an do.

When it comes down to designing levels, I found the NWN editor was as easy as pie to make levels/simple scenarios, with built in scripting for anyone who wants to do something more complex.

This means, that the NWN mod scene has got a darn sight more scenario driven story mods than the more Item Manipulation/Game Additions/Total Conversion mods for Morrowind.

Morrowind has a whole lot more replay time, i think. Theres SO much to do, and in NWN single player you follow the same story over again. I cant play the multiplayer for it so i dont know what thats like, really.

Neverwinter Nights is best RPG so far. Granted the official campaign could be a lot better but the strenght of NWN is that you can always get new adventures to play. There are tons of fantastic fan-made modules for single- and multiplayers. Aurora engine is just superb.

Neverwinter Nights, by far. It has a huge mod community which means your going to have a hell of a lot more replay then Morrowind. Where NWN really shines is in the online multiplayer aspect. There are literaly hundreds of online mods out there. These range from DM run campaigns to full blown persistant worlds. And the combat and character development is better in NWN aswell. Don't get me wrong, I love Morrowind but compared to NWN it comes up short.

So it goes:
Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark
Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of the Undertide (unreleased)

So Neverwinter Nights is overall better than Morrowind?

I heard there is a five second pause between the turn based attacks in NWN. Hit-long pause-next hit. Is this true?

And is there any difference between Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights Gold, other than it's just a "gold edition"?

Only PC RPG I've played has been KOTOR.

^Excellence:
Shadows of Undrentide is released. Neverwinter Nights 'Gold' is base NWN + SoU. There's a platinum edition of NWN coming out containing both expansion packs and base NWN - I'm pretty sure its release date is 22nd of October or sooner.

I really enjoy NWN and its expansion packs - especially HOTU. They have great music and one of my favourite features of NWN is that online you can play other peoples modules that they can easily create.

But anyways, I recommend NWN but I haven't played Morrowind, so I can't comment on it. But I know a few people that play it - and I know it is graphically stunning.

EDIT: And since I've read in many of your Lit posts that you enjoy KOTOR so much, NWN is of course made by Bioware like KOTOR :p

KotOR is based off the Neverwinter Nights engine (I'm taking a bit of a stretch here, but I've noticed the file structures are very similar, with some of the old NWN files included in KotOR!) so they're similar in a few respects. :)

Morrowind's combat is much different, since it's in real-time.

My thanks to all the feedback.

Well, to be fair, aside from Zelda-type quests, KOTOR was my first taste of a RPG type game on the PC. I was blown away at the level of detail to dialogue, music, graphics and playability . . . but that's all I know. I have no experience of other games.

I didn't find any turn based pauses in KOTOR long. I fact, they were over so swiftly I was constantly ordering my characters to attack specifically time and again.

I was reading through some Amazon reviews, and they comment specifically on this "henchman" you can hire in Neverwinter. How you can't control or inventories them, and how weak they were. KOTOR pretty much doubles that, doesn't it, with two fully customisable companions?

Okay . . . so Neverwinter Nights Gold edition is both the primary game and the Shadows of the Undertide expansion, I like that. :D

The Neverwinter community is one of the most compelling aspects of Neverwinter Nights. Fans who purchase the Gold Edition gain immediate access to almost 3,000 community made modules. With the quantity and quality of fan created content, a seemingly inexhaustible source of creativity, Neverwinter fans are provided with an unprecedented amount of replayability.

That's from Amazon's product description. What do the 3000 comunity modules mean? How you customise the game from downloads?

Is the dialogue out loud like KOTOR, or do you read it like the Zelda games?

Excellence: With HoTU you can go through your henchmens inventories. Bioware have upgraded this game a hellovalot since it was first released, through patches and the expansions.

A) Every server runs there own module, with a different story, purpose [Player VS Player or whatever], run the campaign that comes with the game. The game can be customized [eg custom armour, lightsabers made weapons, stuff like that] through downloadable 'hak paks' which you need to get on some servers. You don't need to download modules to get on the servers though, but you do if you want to play them single player. You'd download them off nwvault.ign.com

B)The dialogue is a little of both in the main campaigns - for the main characters and henchmen it's usually outloud, but some parts you read.

Maybe the official NWN site would help you - nwn.bioware.com

I have and love them both.

I have been playing Morrowind since its release and still have hardly done anything over that I did in the previous game. We are talking 500 hrs of game play plus 2 expan packs.

I have NWN and HotU and I love them both as well. I have to say that I love the magic in NWN alot more than Morrowind in fact Morrowind magic to me sux. You can hardly aim you are shooting magic at something. I really like the weapons and armor in Morrowind though. Plus EVERYTHING is stealable in Morrowind.

I like it better than KOTOR magic yes for the simple fact that you point and click what you want your spell to hit. Plus the spells to me are extremely beautiful. THe graphics are great and the colors that flash are way to cool.

It's a tough call. I love both games. Neverwinter Nights doesn't quite match up to Baldur's Gate II, but it's still very good. I think that I'm going to have to say that if you look at whole deal (expansions included), Neverwinter Nights has the better plotline, Morrowind the better engine. Neverwinter Nights has far better NPCs, Morrowind far better exploration (except in the first expansion, which was a letdown).

I'd go for both. If you have to go for one, get the one that you think that you'd prefer: the roleplaying or the exploration.

Based on such a decision, I'd opt for the RPG aspect. I still remember Majora's Mask, which to me was a letdown---expensive letdown, as I need to get a $50 expansion pack acessory. You could explore a large map in that N64 game, but there were only four main dungeons.

How much can you explore a map? Whereas Ocarina of Time had nine whole dungeons.

Baldur's Gate 2 . . . looks like the SNES Zelda! Better, of course, even if the graphics are tiny.

Only PC RPG I've played has been KOTOR.

Did you just admit that you've never played Fallout? First thing to do is go out a get Fallout 1 & 2 ($10 combined) then I would suggest to get Morrowind, which is really cheap and allows you so much freedom it's scary. I've heard Neverwinter Nights is great, but the people I know just didn't have the same obsession I have for Morrowind.

I'm exploring all the main RPGs for the PC. Baldur's Gate looks like a more sophisticated Zelda game, like the SNES one. I'm not sure I want to play a top-down view game, when I could in Starcraft. KOTOR was right in your face, which made it more personal . . .

Don't let the view turn you off, I'd easily consider the Baldur's Gate games to be a better RPG experience than both Morrowind and KOTOR (still never played Neverwinter.) I've also heard great things about the above mentioned Fallout games, as well as Planetscape: Torment, a game that many rank as the best RPG ever. But alas, I am having trouble finding these older games.
