Jim Palso thought for a second, itching his chin lighly with his right hand in thought. "Well, since I'm out-numbered three to one in this one, I'll say okay. But," Palso added, "This will make Lank a happy camper. Jedi Robes. If you have them, wear them. If we're gonna go in as a group, we minus well make our pressence known. And, it might help the locals. Most of them are hard-liners for the Old Republic, fought in the Clone Wars, or who were Jedi themselves. And yes, they've been covering up their identies as Jedi and no, I couldn't point you to who was a Jedi during the Old Republic and who wasn't."

Palso looked over to Rala. "I agree with Lank and Hayden on this one. Stay with the ship. You'll have the two droids to keep you company." Palso added with a playful wink. Palso then addressed the whole group. "Look folks, where we're going, they think the Galactic Empire still rules the galaxy, although they know the Emperor is dead. They all know of the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion, but most haven't seen Jedi since the Old Republic. Luckly for them, the Galactic Empire, New Republic, and Yuuzhan Vong all skipped over them really. This planet is stuck in the Clone Wars era...I swear. You'll see Clone Trooper armor on sale, I shoot you not. Now," Palso said clapping his hand together, "I suggest we just all relax. We'll arrive in about," Palso checked his watch, "Twenty hours give or take." With that, Jim Palso nodded to all and headed up to the cockpit.

"I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because you're not used to working in a military or para-military organization, Mr. Palso. However, one does not simply walk away when a senior officer is speaking to you. Especially after that little stunt you pulled in the cantina on Mon Calamari."

Jim Palso didn't even make it to the cockpit. He got about as far as the gun turrets when he turned around to face Lank.

"Excuse me, sir, but sorry for living a little."

Dinn heard the beginnings of a dressing down echo down the corridor.

"Great. Caught between a fight and a couple." she muttered, rolling her eyes. Steadfastly ignoring Hayden and Rala, Dinn moved over to the kitchen area to make herself some caf and to find Palso's stash of freezdried cakes.

"You call taking a job as a hired gun for a wanted crime figure 'living a little'?" Lank asked, incredulous. "Palso, do you have any idea what risk you placed yourself, this little expedition, and the Outcasts in with what you did?"

Hayden watched as Lank and Palso headed in one direction, Dinn in the other, leaving him alone with Rala. He sat next to her, putting his arm around her as the fighting down the corridor heated up.

"I hate it when they do that."

"Look Lank, I'm sorry," Jim Palso said putting up his hands, "But you have to understand something. Your little world that you call being on a military-style ship...that ain't the real world. The real world is what just happened on Mon Calamari. The real world is walking into the unknown and having to expect the worst. Yeah, having military structure is good and all, but you need to realize two things." Palso started counting off on his fingers. "First, I'm always going to live on the edge. Always pushing at the edge and wanting to push a bit more. And two, regardless of what I do, I will never put the group in danger on purpose. What I choose to do on my time, is my business and I won't expect the group to be involved. If anything ever did happen to me, you got Alfred who can fly the ship and my droids can give you my will. I guess where I'm going with all of this is this, Lank: I have never had anything to call home...until the Jedi Outcasts. I was always the one to drift, to be a lone star. I was always the one to push the edge and know that if I didn't make it through, I had a blast doing it. Now, I have that family. I have that structure. And you know what? I don't know how to handle it. I'm use to busting into a blasting fight with nothing to lose because I had nothing to lose. And now that I have something to lose...I don't want to lose it, but I'm getting soft. And once you get soft in this world...it's over.

"So, yeah, I pushed it. Sorry. But what do you want me to do? Be the poster child for the Jedi Outcasts?"

    "Well ..."

Hayden paused. It did seem a little strange. Of course, they did have there arguments in the past, possibly. Lank and Palso seemed to be two men who didn't have to argue to settle anything though, that made this little scene a little less comfortable to take.

"... not that I'm aware" he said finally.

He sighed. He was glad to have Rala by his side. It made this awkward moment easier to ignore. Dinn seemed lost and upset in a way. He wasn't sure why, possibly the fact she had no-one to talk to. Which was silly. Even though he had Rala with him didn't mean she didn't have someone to talk to.

Holing Rala close, he closed his eyes. He wanted peace and quiet. He wanted this mission to end just as quickly as it had begun so he could sit with her in his arms and not have anything to worry about. He didn't want people to argue, complain or be bitter over things. He concentrated so hard on that thought he didn't realise what was going on around him...

For a split second, just long enough for the crew to comprehend, the Hunk of Junk II shook violently. Warning systems flared, but calmed just as soon as they had started. No damage was reported, as the ship continued on it's course through hyperspace.

When Hayden opened his eyes, he could feel the piercing stare of the others.

Dinn grabbed the square of cake before it hit the ground and let out a string of curses. The Force had just surged around them, rocking the ship in hyperspace.

"Talk about being frakking dangerous!" she yelped as a mug hit her foot. "Who did that?" she snapped, her eyes finding Hayden and glaring at him.

Rala saw how much the fighting had upset Hayden and she sobered. Apparently the issue was more severe than she'd realized.

Hayden held her close, closing his eyes and she hugged him, reveling in his warmth, amazed at how good it really felt. She'd never known anything like this, and now in such a short space of time everything...just everything had changed. It made her head spin.

She was jerked suddenly out of her reverie when the ship began to shake. She jumped, and inhaled sharply, frightened by the shaking of the ship, until it settled down.

"What the sith was that??" she said.

"What I want, Mr. Palso," said Lank quietly, but with durasteel in his voice. "-is for you to realize what you do on your off time can have reprecussions for this group. Had you actually been working for a crime lord rather than undercover NRI operatives, you could've very easily been killed. And while you shrug off your death in such a cavalier fashion, it WOULD have affected the Outcasts. Further, you could've also made some enemies. Enemies like Simms who may go looking for you to get revenge. Do you think trying to keep your edge is worth my life, or one of the other Outcasts'? How about Skye or Earwen, Jim? Do you want to leave their children orphans for you and your 'edge'?" *Lank was about to continue, but then he felt a strong disturbance in the Force and the ship shuddered violently*

    "What the stang was that?"

When he realised what had happened, he jumped back from Rala's embrace and fell to the floor nearby. Dinn quickly came into the room, a cold stare pointed directly at him.

"What the frell!," he cursed under his breath, "How did... I mean ... frak!!"

Sweat dripped from his forehead. He didn't expect that to happen. It was as if he had thought so hard on the sadness and anger that plauged the ship in those moments that it had angered him too. But why was he able to do that? It didn't make any sense to him at all...

Rala noticed how Dinn was staring at Hayden and she brought her gaze to bear on the Jedi as well.

"You...you did that? You can do that kind of thing with the Force?" She was amazed. And a little but in awe of the power of Hayden, and of the Force itself.

Dinn shifted her focus to Rala, then back at Hayden. An exasperated sigh escaped her.

Leaving the couple to soothe each other, Dinn made her way to the cockpit to check everything was okay. She excused herself quietly as she moved brushed between Lank and Palso, feeling like she was cutting through tension.

She slipped into the pilot's seat and went through what systems she knew.

It was also the perfect place to eavesdrop on the arguement...

Jim Palso felt the ship shake, warning lights go off, but everyting seemed fine. Alfred, the ship's personality and computer, would handle everything and only alert Jim Palso to serious problems.

"No," Jim replied, his voice just as cold back at Lank, "I don't think it's right for Earwen or Skye's children to grow up alone without parents. And no, sir, I don't think it's worth your life. My edge is not some drug, Lank if that is what your getting at. Maybe you need to understand something," Palso said, "My 'fix' for the edge isn't going to kill anyone but me. And when it does, it does. No complaints from me. But I'll assure you one thing, no matter how stupid or not by the book I get, I will be an officer first. I'm not a Senior Lieutenant for no reason, Admiral. I proved something to someone. That last mission, did you see one stupid trick or loud mouth comment from me?"

    "I..."

He shook his head. It couldn't have been him. It was far too dangerous to do anything like that ... but ...

    "I don't know," he said, "I don't understand it ..."

He rubbed his forehead in confusion. He thought he had it all figured out ... but it seemed likely that it was far from right.

Dinn saw that nothing was horribly wrong with the ship, and that Alfred had it all under control anyway, so she tiptoed back through the danger zone into the lounge.

"So what the frak was that all about Hayden? Just got bored and wanted to see what you could do?" she asked, crossing her arms and tilted her head to the side.

"I don't understand either...but Dinn looked at you like you were responsible...wow, I had no idea your power was that great. You have...great potential I guess. But why did you make the ship shake?" Rala sensed Hayden probably couldn't answer her questions, but she couldn't help asking, she was alarmed and intrigued by what had happened. She'd never really experienced anything like it.

"I've broken my fair share of the rules, Mr. Palso. Your flying skills are indeed excellent, and you do have a good head for tactics on the fly. However, you've missed my point. I don't want a 'poster child', but I don't need you dragging the Outcasts into unnecesarry danger with stunts like that one in the cantina! You may not be aware of this, but there are a LOT of people who wouldn't shed a tear if we were ALL thrown behind bars. And there are a lot of people who are placing trust in us who could stand to lose a lot over the Outcasts being discovered working for the underworld. I don't want to lose that trust. But I need to be able to trust the people I serve with, and that little escapade of yours shows me that I might have to think twice about the trust I place in you. I sincrely hope you can prove me wrong, though." *Lank starts to leave, then turns back around*

"Jim, I believe you when you say you wouldn't hurt the Outcasts intentionally. But ask yourself this when you find yourself like you did when you were offered that asignment on Mon Cal: 'Could this endanger my family?' And don't just think of today, but the future."

*Lank went back to the living area and sat down heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose*

Jim Palso just stook there as Lank departed. For a moment, Jim did nothing but stand there. Then he turned and sat in the pilot's seat.

He stared off at hyperspace, like he often did. Palso never gave thought to why he looked at hyperspace, it's swirl of blue hyperspace. It was amazing, he guessed. All of that energy...but woven so harmlessly.

Palso felt the handle of his blaster and laced his fingers around the handle, but quickly let go, a cold shiver running up his body.

Not even his droids, who he hardly talked to anynore, cared. But he wasn't going to pull a Lance. If Palso was going to go out, he was going to go out saving lives or doing something meaningful. Not like a coward.

Regardless, Palso just wished sometimes he could go back to not caring about anyone or anything. But now he couldn't. Lank was right, he had a family now to look after. But Jim Palso was never ready for a family. He was meant to ride the waves of space freely, another person of the galaxy living with what they earned with their own hands, not noticed or cared by anyone.

Palso just looked off into hyperspace when the dream came again...

The spinning sky outside. The clouds that went around and around. The green hand against some type of window. And now something new...a huge rush of air and push.

What did it mean? Palso slammed his hand against the console. What were these dreams? He was no damn Force Sensitative Jedi! He was just some guy who happened to be at the wrong place at the right time and landed up with a group of Jedi.

He was never going to share they're powers. He was jealous, sure, no doubt.

Maybe that is what was bothering him all along. Be left on the outside. Being an outcast of outcasts. Being a non-Jedi in a group of Jedi.

"You know what kiddo," Frank had said once, "Regardless of what happens, of what brick walls you run into in life, remember to have faith and to have confidence. Your not always gonna fit in, your not always going to be on top or on the bottom. Force knows you've worked yourself up from the bottom of the slime bucket everytime in life. But you know what, kid, that is what gives you character. Keep that in mind, that even when your on top, picture yourself on the bottom of the slime bucket and having to work your way up always. Because that is what life is, kid, working your way up from the bottom of the slim bucket every time. Above all else kid, beleive in your abilities and your skills. There's always going to be someone better, someone faster, someone stronger, someone smarter. But you find your strongest abilities and excell at those abilities and even if you don't become the best at something or beat someone else for being best, you'll be the best to yourself. And you know what kid, being the best you can be to yourself is everything. You can be your hardest critic or your greatest ally. You choose which one to be."

It was funny how Frank always had things that would cheer Jim Palso up. Sayings about life. Frank had always regretted not quite doing what he wanted to in life, not quite getting there. He always said that watching Jim Palso grow up and become the man he was today and still improve, gave him more then enough pride to cover for all of his faluts.

"You want trust, Lank," Palso said to himself with new determination, "I'll not only show it to you, I'll prove it to you."

Artemis trudged back to the bunk room, having found that the facility was mostly devoid of Outcasts. He was slightly startled to see a man sitting at the edge of a bunk, as he had no expected to see anyone else. Nonetheless, any Outcast was better than none. Not that this man was of no importance. He walked up to the Ensign and extended his hand.

Maeglan followed Klaus into the ship depot and looked around. Most of the vessels would obviously require a bit of work, but there was a nice selection. He looked around for a bit, noting a few freighters that would serve his purpose well, when he suddenly came across a couple of gems.

"I'll be damned. I've never seen Eta-2's outside of a museum. They're a bit banged up, and that one doesn't have any engines, but I've always wanted to fly one. What do you think?"

Maeglan looked down for a moment. Klaus' reasons for his reluctance to fly brought up a lot of memories of battles past and comrades he lost.

"I understand how you feel, Klaus. I lost a lot of friends myself, and carrying on has never been easy. After we first got picked up on Riflor, I considered storing my blaster for good and retiring, but I just can't. Hearing about so many of both our comrades falling to the Vong has me more determined than ever to help bring an end to all war... especially this one. I don't want to have to give one more family a folded flag and a letter telling them that their son or daughter has died needlessly. And I sure as hell don't want to have to live under the heal of another oppressive regime. Now, I can't tell you what to do, but, if your flight combat skills can aide in saving lives, then I hope you consider getting in the cockpit again... besides, I could use a good wingman to back me up out there. I've never been much of a pilot myself..."
