LOL, Vladimir, I remember that on the TPM DVD with Pernilla talking about Shmi's pronunciation, "Shmee? Shmy?". Funny how she referred to him in the plural. Like he's royalty. Well it's like in French I guess. As a sign of respect you call people vous rather than tu which is the plural f 'you'....and that's about as far as my knowledge of the French language goes!

 

It gave me the impression the actors have some say on their characters. Pernilla was asking "we haven't decided yet" not out of respect but as if they had discussed it together. It's not that far a stretch given that Samuel Jackson got a purple lightsaber.

 

It's funny, but I remember when I saw TPM for the first time. Obi-Wan was the first person to say the word 'Tattooine'. But it didn't sound right. It sounded closer to how I'd say it, but it didn't fit so well.

Soon after, they reached the planet. And Ric Ollie goes something like "There it is - Tah-too-ween!", the same word but with an American accent, and it all fit again

 

I always thought it would be pronounced palp-a-tine, (like nine) not palp-a-TEEN,

weird eh?

and I figured it would be DOH-Ku, not du-koo.

But then Gl pronounces it DOH-ku, so i'm confused.

Actually, Luke says it in ESB.

"We'll meet at the rendez-vous point on Tatooine."

And Luke pronounces it differently than in the PT.

 

to jango_joe: actually, Nick Gillard, the stunt coordinator actually used the term "laser sword" (i.e.-"these guys have chosen LASER SWORDS in a time of ray guns and blasters. so they better be damn good with them.") and also, george lucas calls the geonosians "geoknosians."

 

I laugh every single time George does that. He may not be right, but we can always count on him to say it the "special" way.

Most call him HAHN. But some, like Lando, pronounce it like HAND.

The same is the case with LEIA. There is LAY-uh and LEE-uh. Threepio tends to use the latter version.

When your making up names like Naboo, its very easy not to care about pronunciation.

On the Ep2 DVD Sound Documentary, Leanna Walsman hears George say "Nay-boo" and she asks for clarification "Is it Nayboo or Naboo?". He then tells her "Naboo."

I noticed this too! Strange how George chooses to mispronounce his own words. I would have thought that he cannot for some reason pronounce the words the way the characters say them, but after seeing this in the documentary, we know George can say both "Naboo" and "Nayboo".

 

On the TPM documentary, there's a script read-through and Pernilla August asks George how to pronounce Shmi and he says, "It's Schmy" - rhymes with eye. But in AOTC, everyone says: "Schmee"

?

 

I wonder why Mrs. August cared at all. Nobody ever said the name in TPM and she didn't get to say it in AotC

I'm glad there the actors don't pronounce things the same way Lucas does all the time. It adds more to cultural differences in SW. Take the name Juan for example. I'm American, so I will pronounce the name differently that somebody in Mexico who has that name.

 

In TPM, Qui-Gon calls the people of Naboo, the Nayboo.

Obi-Won: An invaision Army !

Gui-Gon: We must warn the NAYBOO (which are the people who live on Naboo).

It's that strange country accent!

 

Perhaps the mix of American English and British English accents lead to a few different pronounciations.

 

I've noticed how Ewan (Scottish) says MYlady, while Hayden (American) says M'lady.

 

I noticed all this as well. Even so, odd that you would purposely pronounce something differently. I see and hear these names so much, I always say them the same. Seems like work to go out of your way to make them sound different. As a side note, I don't think GL has ever said "Lightsaber" it is always lightsword.

Maybe he just gets so damn sick of hearing the same words over and over he uses variations to help keep himself sane.
