The only two films that are actually unquestionably of this year that I have seen and had much use for were Bridge to Terabithia and Breach.

But since there's a certain group of late-2006 limited-release films that seem to be being mentioned, I must also give nods to The Queen and Pan's Labyrinth, and one from about the same time (limited U.S. release in the last days of December 2006), Children of Men! One of my favorite movies ever.

So far as mass-market releases are concerned (I've not had the oppertunity to go that awfully many):

Transformers
Ratatouille
Pirates III
Spider Man III

Enjoyable movies, all.

Flushed Away ***
Hot Fuzz ****
Meet the Robinsons ***
Mr. Bean's Holiday ***
300 **
Ghost Rider **
Spiderman 3 ***
Pirates... At World's End **
Ocean's Thirteen ***
Shrek the Third ***

Well, by that definition, Hot Fuzz was the best. That was probably the only film I've seen this year that wasn't at least slightly disappointing. Some (Pirates, Spidey) have been absolutely rubbish. Spidey gets three stars though, because it was at least good in parts. I know Venom is a fan fave, but really, there's a great film in there screaming to get out but stopped by the producers demanding there be more black-suit, emo garbage and another unnecessary villain. Pirates was just plain bad, though i enjoyed it right until they brought Johnny Depp back. He was the only good thing about the second half. Probably one of the worst big budget films ever made.

Updating my list from the first page.

1. Fracture - Excellent movie with fantastic pacing and amazing acting from legend Anthony Hopkins and rising star Ryan Gosling (this guy's going to be great).

2. Breach - A psychological thriller with little-to-no action. Spectacular film with superb acting from seasoned veteran Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe.

3. The Lookout - Great movie, great plot, and especially great acting from several rising stars.

4. The Invisible - This movie got a lot of hate from the critics (18% on RT), but I thought it was an outstanding film. The acting was spot on (watch out for Justin Chatwin, he's really coming into his own), the plot was intriguing and kept you on the edge of your seat, and it was just all around fantastic.

5. Ratatouille - One of Pixar's best, and easily the best animated film of the year. The animation was amazing, especially the breathtaking scenes of Paris, and the voice acting was spot-on, as it always is when Pixar's at the helm.

6. Transformers - Just an all-around badass movie. The special effects were amazing, and Shia LaBeuof did a really good job. My only complaint was that I couldn't tell who was who when the robots were fighting, but it still looked cool enough to the point that I really didn't care.

7. TMNT - One of the best computer animated films of all time. Great movie, geared towards the younger audiences but I loved it nevertheless. Great fun and beautiful animation.

8. Shooter - I'd never been a huge fan of Mark Wahlberg until his outstanding performance in the Departed (he should have easily won the Oscar). He doesn't disappoint here. Great action flick, I thought it was better than Bourne, but I seem to be in the minority there. My only complaint was that I had to listen to Mark Wahlberg breathing heavily for half of the movie.

9. Freedom Writers - By the looks of it, it seems to be just another Dangerous Minds ripoff, but this movie stands on its own as a great piece of cinema. Hilary Swank is outstanding as always, and the students aren't bad actors themselves.

10. Meet the Robinsons - Another great animated movie, this is Disney's first computer animated success that doesn't involve Pixar. A great and touching story.

11. Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer - Easily the best superhero flick of the year, Rise of the Silver Surfer surpasses its predecessor with flying colors. Doug Jones was outstanding as the Silver Surfer, while Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis playing the Human Torch and Thing respectively were excellent. The acting from Gruffudd and Alba is still iffy, but it does show signs of improvement.

12. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - A disappointing movie (Barbossa is a much better villain than he is an anti-hero), but it was good nevertheless. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush shine just as they did in Curse of the Black Pearl, and Keira Knightley's acting has improved dramatically since Dead Man's Chest.

Updating my list again (trying to keep current).

1. Fracture - Excellent movie with fantastic pacing and amazing acting from legend Anthony Hopkins and rising star Ryan Gosling (this guy's going to be great).

2. Live Free or Die Hard - This. Movie. Rocks. Blows every other action movie released this year out of the water (haven't seen 300 yet, so I suppose it is an exception). I never saw the first three Die Hard films, but now I really, really want to, because this one kicked so much ass.

3. Breach - A psychological thriller with little-to-no action. Spectacular film with superb acting from seasoned veteran Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe.

4. The Simpsons Movie - The funniest movie I've seen this year. I'd never been a fan of the show before seeing the movie, and the trailers made it look terribly mediocre, so I didn't go in expecting much (other than the Dark Knight teaser, which I didn't get to see after all). However, it was absolutely hilarious from start to finish, and I was on the verge of tears and a couple occasions.

5. The Lookout - Great movie, great plot, and especially great acting from several rising stars.

14. Sunshine - Wow, um, well. This is the weirdest/most interesting movie I've ever seen. I honestly can't tell you if it was good or bad, because it's completely abstract. The only thing I can say with confidence is that the acting is great (Cillian Murphy has been one of my favorite actors for a while now). Other than that... I'm at a loss.

1. Ratatouille
2. 300
3. Hot Fuzz
4. Zodiac
5. Live Free or Die Hard
6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
7. Hairspray
8. Pirates 3

I was most disappointed in Spider-Man3. And I thought Ghost Rider is one of the worst movies ever made.

Hands down the award goes to Knocked Up

I laughed so hard I peed a little.

There were two older women (like in 60's) sitting in the row in front of my boyfriend and I and they were just horrified through the whole movie. Made it even funnier though.

Best line:

It's amazing how they could get something as foolproof as Spiderman 3 or Pirates 3 so, so wrong.

I haven't seen Bourne Ultimatum yet, but I get the feeling it's going to top my list. Also, I want to see The Invasion.

Really, 2007 didn't live up to it's name. It was pretty lame.

The only movies I've seen this year are 300, Pirates 3, and The Simpsons. All 3 were enjoyable and I plan to own all 3 on dvd as well, however I found pirates 3 to be a bit of a dissapointment, while the simpsons and especially 300 were better than my expectations.

A lot of movies I don't see until a long time after they are released. Sometimes because they are too obscure to play where I live first-run; sometimes because it gets too expensive.

In the ones I've seen: the third Pirates movie was disappointing, Harry Potter V was rather good, and Bourne 3 was the best.

14. Rush Hour 3 - Less funny then the first, funnier than the second, but it's still a Rush Hour movie, and that's all you need to know. Does what it needs to do, delivers a good amount of laughs mixed in with some serious scenes (Hiroyuki Sanada continues to climb my list of favorite actors). A good popcorn flick.

While it doesn't beat The Queen or Children of Men (both of which were actually last year's releases, so they don't technically count), everything else on my list now falls below Becoming Jane, which is touching and well-made, as well as an intelligent idea well executed. (Imagine writing a Jane Austen novel about the life of Jane Austen. Then imagine making a movie of it. That movie would be Becoming Jane.) Currently my hands-down pick of movies actually from this year.
