Haven't seen many movies this year.
    Best:
    Sunshine 4/5 - Superb film.
    300 4/5 - Great action movie.

    Others:
Spider-man 3 3/5 - On par with the others to be honest, I don't understand the backlash.
Transformers 2/5 - Poorly filmed robots marred further by the worst editing seen yet in a big budget film.
Pathfinder 1/5 - Little to no redeeming feature other than some 300-styled brutality.
Hot Fuzz 3/5 - Amusing but only frequently laugh out loud funny.

Children of Men received limited release on December 26, 2006. It's a 2006 release.

Of 2007 films, the only one I've enjoyed so far (and admittedly, I haven't yet seen Ratatouille and a host of others) is Zodiac. It's no masterpiece, but it is very, very good.

I cant believe Im really going here but, The Transformers and The Bourne Ultimatum. Two action films and one of them a part 3, albeit the best part 3 this side of China and Japan. The year of the perfected American action film? Transformers was a much more flawed film but absolutely stellar nonthelesss. To me it ranged from run of the mill to very inspiring which is something mainstream films just dont do anymore. And plus youve just witnessed the birth of a market friendly franchise that will rival SW, as it has exactly the same potential in its movie, comic book, book, and toy infinete-ness. Potter, Rings, Narnia - all finite despite being lucrative. There will be absolutely no end to The Transformers, trust me on this. Ive never seen pre-teens so amazingly enamored in a movie theater. Couple that with 30+ year olds like me who followed the franchise at their age and were almost equally stunned. And finally everyone else who at the very, very least thought it was one of the most visually arresting films ever. I witnessed the toughest sells of sci/fi cinema - " the girlfriend " - breath gasps over and over throughout the film. I was the spellbound pre-teen during the O.T. so even that didnt leave this kind of overall imprint.

Another film that's technically a 2006 film (that's when it started on the festival circuit) but isn't going to see a standard theatrical release until October to which I must give a major mention: Wristcutters: A Love Story. Although the ending feels a little bit flat, that's absolutely the only criticism that I can level against this beautiful, complicated, thought-provoking film. It's the story of a road trip in an afterlife for suicides; to say anything else would do the film a disservice, and also be very difficult, as the movie is downright wacky. It reminds me a fair bet of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work. It's a strange and enthralling dark comedy of sorts, and you should absolutely, positively go see it when it sees theatrical release on October 19. It's definitely got a slot (and possibly the top one, though I will have to see it again and think about it some more to be sure) among my best films of 2007.

Exactly. By Oscar rules, it's a 2006 movie.

I feel like I haven't seen as many movies this year as I have in previous years, and a few that I have seen were re-releases (Killer of Sheep, which I found disappointing, and Tears of the Black Tiger, which was brilliant). My favorites so far:

    Hot Fuzz
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
    La Vie En Rose

I also enjoyed Transformers quite a bit, but not in that "Oh, Jeebus, what a great movie!" kind of way.

There were also ones that I missed that I had really wanted to see (Sunshine, Ratatouille, Manufactured Landscapes, Knocked Up, and Into Great Silence especially), and a few I'm going to miss if I don't see them soon (This is England, 3:10 to Yuma, and Superbad especially).

However, in the US at least, most of the best movies of any given year come out in the last quarter, so I'm not surprised the pickings are still a bit light. I'm really waiting for Across the Universe, The Darjeeling Limited, and Manda Bala, and also possibly Eastern Promises and the Milarepa movie.

I'm also looking forward to Daft Punk's Electroma being released in my area later this year, but that's technically a 2006 movie also.

Either 3:10 to Yuma or Hot Fuzz. Other than that I haven't seen that many great movies this year.

Those are mine, too! But I also want to see Enchanted. My favourite films this year are probably Ratatouille, 3:10 to Yuma, and Sunshine.

3:10 to Yuma is, simply put, absolutely phenomenal. That said, it isn't even the best Western of the year. That goes to Jesse James. That film... gah, it's just one of the best ever. If it doesn't run away with some Oscars, I may just lose hope in humanity.
