Ok this might already have been covered, if so I apologise. Why did Obi-Wan consult Yoda about his missing planet. Shouldn't he have just gone to find it anyway?.

From memory Obi-Wan was able to explain to Yoda the 'mysterious' pull of gravity where Kamino should've shown on the star maps.

So,he had made a thorough study of the area based on the information Dex gave him.

This leads me to wonder the same thing, Obi-Wan was a respected and more senior Jedi Knight who wouldn't need to check with Yoda about going to look for the missing planet.

So,IMO he may've already conceived the idea to travel to the area and look for Kamino but wanted to ask the opinion of a trusted and even more experienced Jedi to make sure that his idea had merit.

In my experience people do this at times as they are not always certain enough about a course of action and seek advice as to how logical it sounds.

Even though Obi-Wan knew where the planet was supposed to be, he was confused that it didn't show up on the charts. He probably didn't want to fly all the way to the outer rim and find out the planet wasn't there after all. So he went to see what Yoda thought about the situation.

sometimes you just need a different or second perspective to see the obvious or simple solution to a problem.

I think Obi-wan knew something was not right about the missing planet in the database but just didn't want to believe in the solution to it; "But master who could empty information from the archives?" the answer is of course that someone violated the temple or a fellow Jedi betrayed them, both of which are an anathema to Obi-wan.
So he went to Yoda and the Younglings who helped him face up to this disturbing realization.

Yeah, he just wanted a second opinion from someone he respected.

Yeah. I do the same thing.
In most of the cases, I know how to solve a Math problem I`ve been given, but I I often ask my mentor if I am doing the right thing, just to make sure.
Its all about the opinion of those who are wiser than you.

I don't see him asking for an opinion here.

He says this is where it should be. The effects of the gravity are still there. The map shows a blank spot, nature says it's a planet. Obviously an Ewok could put things together from there. The map's wrong.

It was just a silly ploy to show the younglings on film. Otherwise, obi's a dumb as a box of rocks, and I doubt that was the intention of the scene.

Shouldn't he have just gone to find it anyway?

Well he seems to be in an organization that believes that "if its not in the records, it doesn't exist".
So he tries all options first.

While it did introduce us to the Younglings, this scene served another purpose:

Only a Jedi could have erased the records. This broadens the scope of the mystery. Who would have done this and why? Meditate on that, Yoda shall. Perhaps it will turn out that Sifo-Dyas erased it from the records. Or perhaps it is someone else entirely.

A pretty cool twist thrown there.

He wanted to explain the situation to Yoda before running off. I'm sure if you were doing research with for your boss, he would expect you to report in with your findings from time to time, especially if it was something important. I'm sure Yoda likes to be updated, especially if all of this means that a Jedi betrayed them.

Maybe Obi-Wan also thought the same thing as Yoda already, and wanted to make sure that Yoda came to the same conclusions as he did without influencing Yoda.
