I stupidly created a new topic without seeing this one first---anyway......

I'm creating an Obi Wan episode 3 costume.----I've noticed many of you are using a crinkled fabric that kinda has the same effect as the fabric in the movie---I was hoping someone could tell me what it is and where I could find it----thanks in advance!---B

A friend of ours got crinkle fabric it at WalMart. Very nice and close to the real one.
Pretty cheap but probably needs some dyeing.

But the dead on fabric is the one Primrodo came up with for his Anakin costume

Maybe you would like to check out the Anakin costume and lightsabre threadand find out if the guys are doing another fabric order run. :)

Good luck with your costume :)
BTW Welcome to the boards :D

Well I can order natural colour whenever I need to, no special order needed there, only if I want to make a differnt colour :)

It looks exactly like the fabric I posted a pic of a few post above ;)

I got the Dressing the Galaxy book a few weeks ago. Along came 3 of 4 Obi-Wan Episode 3 swatches.
Here is a pic of the Obi-Wan page in the swatch booklet
    [image=http://www.petridish.net/pics/23438/Bild%20008.jpg]

I was surprised how light the actual fabric for the outer tunic is. On the picture you can see the pic underneath the swatch is shining through...

Watching the film I already recordnised that the fabric of the robe has kind of a pattern on only one side of the fabric.
I'll ry to make a few close ups of the swatches for you guys. It won't help a lot with the colors but I think it could be usefull to get the structure of the fabrics. :)

I'm also working on a list with things I noticed about the costume like seams and stuff. Just to let you know :)

I got this piv from padawansguide.com, taken by Beane Quee

    [image=http://www.petridish.net/pics/22369/ObiWanneck.jpg]

You do not even have to look close to see, that the neckpart and the actual tunic are made out of different fabric.
    I mean hu!?

I noticed this recently through other pictures, and told a couple but wasn't sure.

It looks like they made teh sleaves and neck over an existing inner tunic:

Wow--amazing find guys------I wonder why Trisha would have designed it like that---perhaps the under tunic was too hot, bulky, heavy etc and they only wanted the brown to peek out of the obvious spots-----B

ps---what sites are you guys getting these images from?

Thanks for the pic, Justin :)

I guess the "under tunic" is made like a shirt to simply secure that the costume stays in place during acting and especialy during fighting scenes.
Everyone who ever wore a tunic can tell you that it's a hard thing to keep everything where it belongs. And we are only walking around in the costume and try to look cool ;)

But your idea is good also. That it's more comfortable to wear because of lighter fabric.

Rogan there is no "real" probblem because of this find. You just have to decide if you want a Jedi under tunic like we've imagined it or if you would like to use movie magic as well ;)

btw as I posted the picture was taken by Benea Quee. She made it at the Bostom exhibition.
So cheers to the people who had to dress the puppet ;)

Hard to decide. I guess I will go with the complete brown undertunic, cause I also plan to move and fight (as you know ;) ). Maybe this one was the hero version, and they used a different one for the distant camera fights.

    Tabard & Tunic fabric find

FYI - Britex Fabrics in San Francisco has a linen/cotton blend loose weave fabric that is almost identical to that used on Obi's Tunic. As I recall it is $10.99/yard. The weight, weave, and feel is identical. Only difference is that it lacks the slight 3-D rippled texture of the fabric used in the movie. It's also lighter in color, and would need to be dyed. They have done mail order swatching in the past. I'd imagine if you print a picture of my scan they will locate the fabric for you.

I scanned a side by side comparison:

The fabric had me so excited I was wishing I had an excuse to make the costume!

I would advise getting the fabric anyway kay_dee, there will always be someone you can sell it to down the road!

Nice! That is exactly the kind of fabric I've been hunting for, and I only live about two hours from San Fran. I might have to make a trip in the near future (although I fear how much it'll end up costing me!!).

I got 1/4 yard today so I can play with trying to crinkle it. If it works I'll have to get some for my fabric stash.

Really an amazing find kay_dee :D
And look at this fabric store

Dyeing the fabric could also be tricky...

You know on the one hand it's absolutly amazing to have the original fabric swatches to compare with.
But on the other hand I don't really want to know how far away the fabric is that we used or bought for our costumes.
    [face_frustrated] ;)

I hear ya! Actually, I don't think dying it should be that tricky. It would take a few experiments. But Rit Dye or Procion dyes should work (maybe even natural stuff like tea dyes).

For those who have the Dressing A Galaxy Book, there is a chapter that shows Trisha shopping in fabric stores. Several shots were taken in Britex (I see their labels on the ends of the bolts). No Wonder the staff there knew several years ago that a book was in the works ;)

Also goes to show that not everything was custom made expressly for them ;)

I still have to get the regular book!

And I agree Gaitha, sucks...but in a way it helps! I mean finding close enough stuff is part of costuming, like the Anakin fabric. Its great looking fabric, looks identical and when swen together looks amazing!

I wouldn;t feel bad about anything you get in the mean time, upgradeing is important! Of course now I have options for something closer...but I will send you and your brother a swatch for sure ;)

Well the only sad thing is that its sold out where I am getting it and only 9 yards left...so i am nabbing it all. But with a sizable swatch you may be able to find it elsewhere.

one option too maybe late in the year is to get it reproduced with custom fabric makers. i know a buddy of mine that did it for his Darth maul robe fabric, a custom Matka...
