I honestly WANT a female lead, just to be different! But I don't want them to repeat the love triangle from the original trilogy. That'd just feel too rip-offy.

I am 10000000000% supportive of a female lead. I like change and dammit I need another strong female lead *and TBH little girls these days need more strong role models not people like Bella Swan, that Nikki chick and all these other stupid MTV people. Thank god for Katniss*. If SW7 can give us a strong, bad ass female lead then HECK YEAH.

I want a strong female lead so I have an excuse why I want to drag my daughter to see it.

You know what I really want to see? A Han-daughter relationship. I think it would be really cute to see Han as the overprotective dad watching over his daughter and squabbling with her.

For me, it was about the adventure. Not really wanting to be Luke but experiencing the universe as a whole. It all came together..though being a jedi would be pretty nifty.

Saying it's a boy's movie doesn't really ring true to me, Star Wars has always been good at netting a wide audience of nerds, both young and old, different genders. Just about everybody has seen them.

As long as the film is good and the character is written well, I think those are the things that will ultimately resonate with audiences, not so much the kids having to worry about the lead being a girl.

Are we really going to be this concerned whether or not the main hero of the film and/or trilogy is a male or female? A hero character, if they really are a hero, has universal traits, or qualities, that should transcend gender, species, character type, etc. A hero can be anybody or anything, and that's partly why civilizations throughout history have been enamored with heroes. It is true, due to a variety of historical and cultural reasons, that men have often been the ones portrayed as heroes in myths, stories, legends, etc. But let's be honest, now, more than ever, we know that it doesn't matter. A hero can be anyone.

Not likely because I doubt they'd skip a generation. Leia simply got her twins when she was 40-45. Age problem solved.

Who the hero is is one of the most important aspects of any story. It can be a total dealbreaker. If the hero is completely unlikeable then it is already unlikely that a movie would succeed. So yes, who the hero is is frigging important.

I think the best scenario would be a male and female heroes leading equally. Both equally strong. That way it preserves the traditional Star Wars vibe. I am hoping for this scenario.

If JJ Abrams is good at anything it is getting a great cast, I think his Star Trek had some of the best casting I've ever seen for a remake/sequel. I am convinced Karl Urban had been possessed by the spirit of DeForest Kelly after seeing Star Trek Into Darkness.

I'm certain there will be an important male lead too but somebody gotta play the second fiddle, no way around it. The male lead will likely be the Spock to the female leads Kirk.

    Lol, that came out funny.

Well, Star Wars heroes usually come in trios. So two can lead equally and the third would play the fiddle.

And I'd love to see it. Heck, he doesn't look much older than he did back during the PT.

I can't wait till we learn whose playing who so we can start making predictions on who will die first [face_skull]
    (character wise not actor wise)

But then again...this isn't a Joss Whedon/George RR Martin movie so there is a chance all of our new cast might survive but who knows ;)

Interesting round up. The 70 year old could be a politician, or a 'friend' of Palpatines perhaps?

Count me in the group that's hoping for a female lead too - although I prefer not a teen, rather someone in her 20s.

Seems like we might have quite the cast coming on here.

Two young males and females which is good, though no mention of an older woman which means perhaps Mara Jade is not happening (at least not yet). I assume this does not include Luke Leia & Han since that would mean only one of them is appearing in it.

The old man is the most interesting, there aren't a lot of older characters left from the PT or OT who would fit that role unless they are recasting Lando or Wedge.

Unless it's Boba Fett, who would fit in that age range.

I really hope the lead character is a male. A female character can be one of the other main characters, but not the lead. This just seems like if the lead is a female, it's for the sake of it being a female. I hope that the characters feel right for the story, not for the sake of demographic and appeal.

If either of these late-teens girls can rival Jaina for depth of portrayal, I'll be happy. But given you've got two younger girls, a guy in his twenties and a guy in his late twenties, I'm not so sure. I would like to see a big sister of sorts.

Or it could be a female lead just fit the story they wanted to tell and has nothing to do with demographics or any other such nonsense.

Because a female lead character must always seem tokenistic as male characters are just the norm amirite. How is that ever going to change if every time this idea comes up there's always some dude whinging about tokenism?
