https://www.buzzfeed.com/ggggenji/7-photos-of-tom-cruise-pretending-to-be-taller-tha-9mo9 I think all of the rumors about that have pretty much been the "hey look it's Han!" moment.
I want to be proven wrong! We'll see how the movie turns out, but the guy on the right (Mark Hamill) is the same height as the guy they cast as the new Han Solo. I know 5'9" is not hobbit sized, but tall men have a different physical presence than shorter ones. Edit: weezer, none of those Tom Cruise examples include full body long shots with other actors, except the last red carpet photo of him with Katie Holmes. And she's wearing the flattest sandals possible, with evening attire! Tom Cruise is a little guy, and that's cool. He's Tom Cruise, but he doesn't have the physical presence of a bigger man.
This is going to be a bit of a Rian Johnson thing, where Disney and Lucasfilm, for some bizarre reason, refuse to make it “official”, even though everyone and their cat knows its true. In terms of the actor, I have no opinion, as I’ve never seen any films with him. What I will say, though, is that I thought they would go younger. I don’t want him in Rogue One, though. I thought this film was supposed to be set further back than that. RO is literally about a week or two before ANH.
I think people underestimate how important performance is to all of this, as well as the writing (and that includes both characterisation and story). If the film grabs you enough that you believe Ehrenreich is a younger Han Solo, thanks to a good performance, solid direction and decent writing, the goal has been achieved. Looking like Ford is the least important factor. He only needs to look like Han Solo, which is determined by the other factors. Does Daniel Craig look at all like Sean Connery? No, but he looks like Bond because he's made the role his own.
If only there was some way that filmmakers could influence the appearance of actors, so that they appear more as the character they envision. I know I'm talking crazy.
As many have said, a great performance with a good script and savvy direction will make or break this. What this guy appears to have is the ability to be charismatic, funny and heroic, which is a fantastic start. Disney had, for the most part, played their era smart and executed with excellence, so I am cautiously optimistic. My only other concern is that it is PRE-Falcon or mostly so. I want to see him in smuggler mode with the Falcon. He will obviously have some sort of major challenge/character arc in the movie (as that is how proper stories are delivered), so it will be fascinating to see what Kasdan and his son come up with. Perhaps it is getting the Falcon (which I hope is early on) or meeting Chewy (which I also hope is early on). Unlike many people, I do not enjoy origin stories as much as I probably should, with some exceptions. I like to "get on with it." Just an impatient, hyper 80s kid : )
Exactly. Talk about two actors who couldn't possibly look more different but with a little movie magic can play the same person.
If they show him get the Falcon, then Lando has to feature somewhere, as he owned the ship before Solo.
I really really don't want just the adventures of Han as a smuggler because frankly, that's boring and doesn't lend us any further development of his character.... thus rendering this movie even more unnecessary than it already is. We already know he was a smuggler, we've seen him smuggling... There's no need for that to be the plot. If they want to show us how/why he ended up a smuggler, that's a little more interesting. In this canon, was he still in the Academy beforehand? I can't remember. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
"That's not how the Force works" That's a line that's pure Han Solo but at the same time it's pure Harrison Ford. If Ehrenreich can deliver that same line as Han Solo without sounding like a Ford parody, I'll be convinced.
Ewan nails it again I'm not particularly concerned about the casting, probably because I'm not hugely excited about the film - not yet, anyway. Physical differences will be less important the better the film is.
That's fine you think so but I don't see why. LK had nothing to do with ANH and since Lucas wrote TESB and brought in LK after then rewrote Kasdan's work I don't see the connector to LK understanding Han better. I think he showed in TFA that he understood Han as Lucas portrayed him in the OT but like so many things that was still from Lucas. I'd say the person who understands Han near as good as Lucas is Ford himself (since in essence Lucas thought of Ford as Han) but at the end of the day the actor can only work with what they are given so if Ford had any reservations about Han in TFA then even he could only do so much just like he couldn't get Han killed off in ROTJ. Well this is part of my point. When Lucas and KK called LK in about working on the new movies he took the Han Solo project. So presumably he took Lucas' storyline and at the very least (based on his great respect for George) is absorbing the material. I like Kasdan but at the same time I'd trust a Lucas initial take on Han far more than a Kasdan one. Of course the reality also is that it's far more likely anything Lucas comes up with can only really be done by him. A storyline is one thing but the thousand of details going into a movie is another. Certainly they will have to use some LOTR perspective tricks in shots with Chewbacca. Alden Ehrenreich 1.76m Harrison Ford 1.85m Cuba Gooding JR 1.78m, O.J. Simpson 1.85m Can't say I ever fully bought CGJ as O.J. but it's not everything. Obviously we know that he can't really be Harrison Ford's solo but as a 10 years younger version it's not as noticeable. On the other hand Chris Pine is 6ft to Shatner being 5'9 when he played Kirk on the OS while Quinto and Nimoy were about the same.
You know, there is a way to fix this, just have the tallest stormtroopers all about 5'6". Chewbacca can be shorter as well, problem fixed, j/k. I do agree, there should be a physical presence, and a somewhat likeness of Ford. If this was 10 years before A New Hope and he was playing a 19-21 year old Han, it would be a whole lot easier for me to accept, but 5 years is pushing it.
