I've said this before and I'll say it again... I would have loved to see RO (with story tweaks obviously) be the first film of the ST! It would have been 10 times better  and 10 times more interesting.

I hope, at the very least, he gets to direct a few episodes of the Cassian show. But I’d like to see another film from him too.

The only change I might have made for Rogue One, and it is a nitpick because the costumes are pretty cool, would have been for Krennic to have been accompanied by regular Stormtroopers at the beginning at the Erso farm. I liked the black troopers, but they felt sort of shoehorned in, because you didn't see them again. Their introduction made me think that they might have been a bit more central to the plot, but they weren't.

This guy's armour was awesome though

I think you’re misremembering the film. The black Deathroopers appear in almost every single scene with Krennic after that, and are later deployed on Scarif in firefights with both the main Rebel Force, and to stop Jyn and Cassian.

I suspect I am. Thanks for reminding me (I guess they weren’t too memorable for me )

    No worries.

They are also responsible for the deaths of both Chirrut and Baze. I’d suggest giving the film another watch and looking out for them. They’re just as prominent as the regular stormtroopers.

The entire battle within the Scarif shield (both air and ground) was changed in the Empire's favor solely because the Death Trooper squad was deployed. They shot down Blue Leader, causing the Rebels' aerial assault to fall out of sync, leading to the abrupt loss of their air support. And, then they landed, turning the tide on the ground in favor of the Imperial troops.

I'll have to watch it again. Perhaps they just get lost to me among the chaotic battle scenes such that I only really remember them being prominent during the searching of the Erso homestead in the opening scenes. I distinctly remember those imperial beach troopers in the sand-coloured gear, but I didn't remember seeing the black troopers.

Yeah, they were pretty instrumental. Completely missing them seems a little odd. Maybe @Bob Effette had his brightness settings on very high, and everything, including the Death Troopers, registered as bright white? ;)

If you do revisit the film, there are actually distinct musical cues for both instances of them turning the tide in the air and then ground battles.

The X-Wings are winning but then a musical sting hits just as Blue Leader is shot down by them. And, then, a sting hits in the soundtrack as they run down the ramp of the ship.

Are you sure about that part...? [face_thinking] (goes back and watches) They were in the Tie Reaper, which was escorted by the Tie Strikers which shot down the Blue Leader :-BThey then successfully landed on the beach.

The Deathtroopers are the best/coolest design since the ROTJ Royal Guards! I hope The Mandalorian doesn't botch them...

I would say personally the most effective part of the design was the gabbled communication, made them much more threatening.

Edwards does seem to be in the good graces of Disney still with the cameo in TLJ so I wouldn't totally rule out as a return and as has been noted The Mandorian does obviously bare a pretty strong visual resemblance to his work as you'd imagine the Cassian series will.

Really to me that feels like the most successful update of Starwars visuals anyone has come up with since the originals. Not moving too far away from the source material like the prequels but also not focusing on more simplified references to them. it does include a lot of references to the originals as well of course but you get both a war torn middle eastern vibe to it and a shift towards more industrial design.

Well, the DP for Rogue One is the DP for the Mandalorian, so the visual resemblance makes a lot of sense.

Indeed although I think you can see a lot of holdover from Edwards Monsters and Godzilla in Rogue One in terms of the visual style of the films.

Not seen any of the "monster" franchise since but I felt the 2014 film was underrated not just in having a good dramatic side to it(especially the start) but in the way it built atmosphere that really sold the monsters scale.

Such unbridled violence only serves to contrast what a scheming, manipulative and sinister person Vader is throughout the OT.

In the end you were right to question KK's judgement.

I wish him well with the project. I thought Rogue One was very good, so it'll be interesting to see what he does with this opportunity.

Everyone should see his first film "Monsters". It's great, and was made with a crew of 7 people, including the actors. He did almost everything himself. He was the director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, and vfx guy. Really good Indie Sci-fi film.
