It would be interesting if Galen and Jyn are in similar situations. He is captured by the Empire and forced into working for them to make the DS work right, and she is captured by the Rebellion and forced to lead a team to steal the DS plans her father helped create.

I'm pretty sure the so-called "flashback scenes" of Jyn's childhood will be handled considerably different than the ones in TFA. My guess is that the movie will start by showing Jyn watching her father being taken away by stormtroopers, and then we'll get a "10 years later...." text of some sort.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up for any prequel scenery though.

If that is indeed what's happening in the Iceland scene, I can't wait. Has the potential to be a beautifully tragic Star Wars moment. Like nothing we've seen before in live action canon.

Rebels (TV Show) and Vader (Comic Series) have or will start intertwining some of Rogue One into the dialogue and plot. Vader (in issue #21) came across a scientist working on the SSD Executor, who was also on the DSI project team.

Kyber crystals, Lothal, Sith Temples and Tarkin Initiative are being threaded into an overarching tapestry of what it took to build DSI and it's primary weapon array. Also, it lead to further research - scientific approach to the Force and potential weapon systems and personal power enhancements. Maybe this will relate to how Snoke came about.

Regarding Rogue One, I'm thinking there could be a Dr. Cylo cameo with Mads working under him. It's exciting to see how this all links together. There is a massive story behind the construction of the biggest mass murdering weapon ever fictionally created.

Vader and Tarkin deserve their respective cameos/roles in this... DSI cannot be portrayed without the involvement of those two in their "menacing prime".

    It's perfect--almost too perfect...

It relates directly to (and reinforces thematically) the very first bit of story we were ever given:

Another retcon to the main story to fit in another character just to make a plot for a movie. A throw away character at that. I don't understand why they are changing so much just to shoehorn a story into what basically is a suicide mission. You could make a 2 hour story about that without all this need for new stuff just for the sake of new stuff. I mean saving private ryan didn't have all this kind of backstory. There was a mission and the whole story was about getting from point a to point b and ultimately the final objective with all the chills and thrills coming from the combat along the way.... I understand they want the film "to be different" but that shouldn't mean just make up stuff that can't and wont be seen anymore because it is a past episode prior to things that have already happened and been shown, especially for a movie that comes literally right before ANH.

For example, why can't Mads just be one of the chief operations engineers on the death star who suddenly had second thoughts? Or why not just a person of high technical rank who turned spy for the rebel alliance? That to me would be a more compelling case that making him out to be some chief scientist for something already designed and built by aliens which was already established in the ST (the death star was under construction at the end of the last ST film).

According to credible rumours from MSW, Galen Erso is exactly that. The Death Star was originally designed and built by the Geonosians for the KUS, but after the end of the Clone Wars, the Empire took over the project. The reason why it took so long for the Empire to complete the Death Star was because they had to find out how the super laser wold work. And Galen Erso was according to that rumour a key scientist in designing the laser. But after it is finished, he realizes what he has built - just like Robert Oppenheimer, who felt guilty after helping the Americans to built their nuclear bomb - and contacts the Rebel Alliance about it.

You do realize that you are complaining about elements of the Rogue One story that are just speculation? For all we know, all your suggestions could be true. Mads might just be a chief operations engineer, or a person of a high technical rank turned spy. We just don't know yet.

Or KOR got a hold of all that tech and Snoke used it once he came to power in the order.

That quote does not claim that he designed the Death Star. Just that he has some critical knowledge of how to make it work. So that should be perfectly consistent with the Geonosian backstory of the Death Star. Plus, it's far more interesting than your option. An Oppenheimer-esque character in Star Wars is fascinating, and for me, the most fascinating thing about Rogue One at the moment.

Galen Erso: "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

    Bring it on.

I totally get that. The only thing that struck me is how could a design for the death star not include the most critical part: the death ray. But we don't have long to wait to find out.

It may have originally included a Geonosian design for the death ray that when assembled (or when tried at that scale)...simply didn't work properly. A common occurrence in technological developments throughout history.

I like to think that the Geonosians had perfected a smaller-scale death ray, but ultimately, we're successful at scaling it up to the planet-destroying level.

So what he described as Galen's invention didn't sound like a superlaser or anything like that. I'm thinking whatever it was is stolen by the Empire and repurposed for the Death Star.

It's a shame he's not roughly Felicity Jones's age because then he could be the male lead that falls madsly in love with her. Madsness you say?

He looks like the Star Wars version of David Carradine's Caine when he was still young.

    But your theory intrigues me

my theory is that galen came up with some great power source that could sustain huge amounts of power to help people. the empire are using it for the ds weapon.

Galen Erso looks awesome. His black robe, and the black sand of his Planet, makes it look like a Dark version of Tatooine. [face_devil]

I like that they went to Iceland, to film in the black sand. It at least sets this Planet apart from other desert Planets, like Tatooine and Jakku.

Good theory. Sounds like during the panel they said something about him designing something that could change the universe. Which was true from a certain point of view.
