I thought she was a funny character. Not sure what all the fuss is about. I think some people took it a little too seriously.
Really? The theater I was in was quiet. What broke the silence was my 5year old asking loudly why she was turning off and if she died. Followed by his "awwwww." Funny how kids exhibit empathy and don't see agendas. Adults could take a page from that book.
She was supposed to be a little obnoxious. And Lando being exasperated by her cause while they are trying to just make a buck. That was the whole point. You weren't being preached at. Plus, it's not like she was advocating for something controversial... You sound like Orson Krennic. "Find it!"
She actually was called the 70s equivalent of SJW propaganda when A New Hope, then called Star Wars, premiered, and so-called fans gave Lucas all kinds of hell because she wasn’t sweet and kind to Luke and Han when they rescued her. I loved L3, from her saying “You’d better hope you can find it” to the guy who said he’d “flip her switch,” to telling Han to get his ass out of her seat, to Lando telling her to “let go of the mean man’s face”, to her yelling “Rebellion!” She is an outspoken badass, which is the way I like my characters. All the complaining beforehand about her relationship with Lando was ridiculously overblown. Their dynamic was platonic and not “pansexual” at all. Her death was the one moment in the movie when I teared up (and thankfully nobody in my theater laughed). I’m glad her “brain” is in the Falcon. She was probably my favorite character in this movie and my favorite droid behind R2 and K2SO (I also cried when he got disintegrated). Here’s a great article on her: https://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/2018/05/20/star-wars-l-3-l-7-solo-droid-female/624376002/
I enjoyed L3. She was a good foil to Lando and served her purpose in the story. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more of her and Lando in action in another film. I also don't get the hate for the whole equal rights for droids bit - are those who don't like it that uptight that they can't enjoy a fictional character asking for something that all sentients should have?
So many good bits with her, every line is just gold. "You'll have to do that thing again." *Lando looks awkward.* Were L3 and Lando intimates or platonics? Honestly, I could go either way. But the "It works" line does sort of imply intimates but not state it. And her exit "Lando... Lando!" Gak! So that's L3 right by Threepio's head, correct? Assuming Han didn't yank her out at some point. (I will admit in my continuity nerd obsessive there was a part of me that thought she would end up being Lobot for some reason, maybe taken apart and tossed on a human, which would have wrecked the Lobot origin in the Lando mini but that didn't come to pass. But I definitely knew she probably wouldn't make it out of this one)
It's the alt-right folks at it again.... I didn't care for the character for the most part, but the one moment that made me spit out popcorn was the "how does that even work...oh it works" exchange.
It would have been more effective if her character's fight-for-rights tendencies were toned down some...until they get to Kessel and when she realizes the opportunity for a droid uprising which will also help Lando and Han's mission simultaneously and she goes full on Droid Revolutionary for 10 minutes before her death. As it was, it was slightly over the top with the constant one liners. But I appreciated the idea of the character. It was different and I liked that. Phoebe's delivery was always great too. Just a little bit too much of her IMHO.
Some say her character was a "SJW" but I've also heard it suggested that her character was a parody of that viewpoint. So what point, if any, the filmmakers are making is in the eye of the beholder. I read someone's comment that she was hard to understand, which I didn't find to be the case at all but perhaps it depends where you're from.
Some of the best literary sic-fi has dealt with the relationships between robots and humans and the rights the former has in a world where they have sentience. Asimov is just one. SW has always just had droids as servants with benevolent masters(unless you are Jabba)and it's always been there. Droids clearly have some sort of self awareness in the GFFA. To finally have a droid bring up the question about rights is actually 'bout damn time if you ask me. edit: It is a small bit but I think LFL has really knocked the new droid characters out of the park. Loved BB8. Instant classic. K2SO is right up there too and L3-37.
Have to say i found that droid character very annoying and was very glad when it died (shut down whatever ). Also it ruined the character of Lando.Hes supposed to be a ladies man but has feelings for a droid? Does that sound any bit at all like the Lando we meet in ESB? He barely even notices Threepio because hes too busy ogling Leia! Glovers Lando should have spent the film trying to woo Qira.
There's also the passage in TLJ novel about the Falcon having three droid 'brains', who quarelled between themselves and one of them had a fondness for romantic gossip and dirty jokes. The passage is quoted here: https://screenrant.com/solo-movie-millennium-falcon-l337-last-jedi-tease/
This was the first thing that came to mind once they said that L3 was part of the Falcon. Also, did anybody notice that the Falcon starts to make some of the same familiar nav computer sounds for the first time *after* L3 is connected to it? I seem to recall some of those noises coming from L3 earlier in the film.
I thought it was strange that for a droid that was all for equality she was not really given any in death. In fact she was butchered by having her mind ripped out and plugged into the Falcon where she will forever be a slave to the owner of the Falcon.
Fits in perfectly with a universe where droids have no rights! Have to say I absolutely loved the idea of L3 becoming part of the Nav computer. It’s a great example of how prequel films can add to the OT, it will certainly add to my enjoyment of ANH and ESB!
Its funny to think witin not even a year 3 of the worse star wars characters have been created....the purple haired generial girl, rose, and this dumb robot of Landos. Jar Jar was annoying at times, but at least he was also likeable at times as well. I will say the robot of landos at least had a couple funny moments like when she reacted to that guy getting beat up in that room, and when shes like "your free...go do whatever" (forgot exact words)
L3 was a character I really wanted to like but for me the problem was that she was too abrasive. She always seemed to be shouting: even the volume of her voice was too loud. I'm all for an outspoken salty droid and a motif about droid rights -- and the part where she freed the slaves on Kessel was one of my favorites -- but she always seemed to be dialed up to 11. And I don't blame Phoebe -- to me that's a director's misstep.
