Awesome clips, Alden impressed in all three IMO. Thandie and Woody are great as always.

 

I'm very optimistic.

 

And someone in the Madalorian armour. I’d assumed it was a display of some sort.

 

I'm starting to really feel like I'll be able to accept his Han now by about 10-15 min into the story the same way I did Chris Pine's Kirk. It will be the same as with that. There will be an adjustment period as there was with that. How could there not be after how much time we've spent with Harrison? But I'm hopeful now that eventually I'll just be having so much fun and finding Alden charming and cool enough that I won't really care about the differences the same way I did Pine's Kirk. To be fair to Pine though... I thought he brought ADDITIONAL masculinity to Kirk that helped. It was almost like when Daniel Craig took over Bond from Pierce Brosnan. The additional masculinity helped because it felt like an addition to Kirk (In Bond's case more of a throw-back to Connery). There is no additional masculinity beyond Harrison Ford. There's no going up from that while still being charming and young. He's one of the most masculine dudes of the past 30 years. So, Alden can't bring that to the table as an upgrade the way Pine did to Kirk over Shatner. Alden does seem to be charming though and that counts for a lot.

And that excites me because it was the only major roadblock for me and I've liked what I've heard and trust the work of the Kasdans and Howard and love the cast.

EDIT: Did anyone hear the guitar work at the start of the Sabbac scene? I had thought the guitar work was only a trailer thing but I'm beginning to think there will be guitar in the score. Am I just hearing something else? Those sound like guitar strums to me briefly at the start there just as the clapping fades.

 

It's obviously tough to judge clips in isolation, but I have to say the coverage and cutting of the Han/Lando Sabaac scene is a little rushed. Hopefully a bit smoother in the context of the film.

 

I can't keep up with which clips are new and which we've seen, but here's one that's new to me.

 

This film looks sensational. Alden’s delivery in the clip on Mimban is perfect. Very Han Solo! I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this movie will be even better than R1!

All I want is a pre ANH Princess Leia movie. The actors who played Bail and Breha are just the right age for it now. Sadly, I don't think that will ever happen or they wouldn't have commissioned Claudia Gray to write Leia's pre ANH novel.

 

I wrote this on the literature thread, but I'll write it here as well--has anyone heard anything about a novelization for this film? It's been a ritual of mine since the good old days of James Kahn to read the novelization shortly after seeing the movie...I'll be sad if they skip it this time. Anyone have any info at all?

 

This IMAX poster gives us a good look at Dryden's ship in flight. Just to the left of Chewie.

Yeah, I don't think that's Dryden's ship.

Dryden's ship is the one we've seen in all the TV spots and the room where Han and co meet Dryden.

 

I’m guessing the Cloud Riders’ ship. They need a way to get from Vandor to Savareen.

Actually, the base section sort of looks a little like the silhouette in one of the tv spots that folks were claiming was Slave 1. The tower section doesn't fit that silhouette, but maybe it's at an angle, and we aren't seeing it?

 

Yeah, I wondered if that was the "Slave " shadow.

 

If it is, and that's part of the Kessel run, then I wonder if this is the Cloud Riders' ship laying in wait for the Falcon? A homage to the ESB garbage dump scene, maybe?

 

Do we know what genres are kind of being blended in this by now?

Western influences. Including a train heist.
War film influences
Mafia film influences
1950s street racing influences
Pirate influences
Grifter influences (Slight sub-genre of crime)
Gambling film influences
Prisoner of War film influences combining with Prison chain gang breakout influences?
Obviously, with Sci-Fi / Fantasy thrown in

I really like the sound of all of that to be honest. Theoretically, on the page anyway... this story could be a blast. I'm glad Howard is in charge because you need a steady hand who really knows genre and who can blend all of those to create a unique atmosphere.

 

I play a game called Star Wars Combine, and my faction owns a planet (Rodia) in the Savareen system lol. It seems legends lists it as an "area" as well. But then again, legend pieces are cherry picked and incorporated into new canon, so I'm not stating that you're wrong in this case.

 

That's Han and Chewie riding the Yaks BTW, in case that's not been mentioned yet. I have the theatrical poster.

I also love this clip with Vos. He’s going to be an excellent addition to the Star Wars villain roster. Pure creep.



Really great writing on display too (particularly “I admire anyone who can crawl their way out of a sewer” and the pronunciation nit-picking by Han and Lando as subtle digs at each other). The Kasdan duo is killing it.

Can you get a better look at the yaks on the poster? Curious what their faces look like...

That’s not the Mando armor. It’s Dryden’s wolf-man bodyguard armor. There’s a Funko Pop of one of those guys:

Dryden Vos has at least two pimped-out guards that follow him around everywhere. Never noticed that until today.
