Ok I managed to get my hands on the paperback and read the excerpt.

I wont comment on it because I'd rather wait to read the whole book, its never fair to judge a story on its first chapter. But I look forward to reading the rest of it.

I might be able to post the excerpt later( for those who havent seen it and can't be bothered to read the PB), when I'm off work. ;)

Since DR usually takes a dim view of us hosting it here, I'd recommend that any requests for such a thing take place, er, PRIVATEly... Mmmm'kay?

This may be one of the best novels in a long time!

Does anybody have more information about "Shatterpoint"? I'd like as many spoilers as possible. I'm writing a long-winded fanfic right now, and Depa Billaba is featured prominently in one of the chapters, and I don't want to go against the EU if she say, dies or something.

Post or private message, whatever's deemed appropriate.

This book, Shatterpoint, and Legacy of the Jedi are the two Clone War's books I'm most excited about. I'm definitely going to buy this book.

And guess what it says on the button...

I have to say that I wasn't at all engaged by the first excerpt (the written excerpt towards the back of the AotC paperback). And from my experience with Matt Stover's writing, that doesn't happen with me at all.

The audio excerpt just gave me a new perspective though :)

    Stupid RealPlayer!

And Vergere said there was no Dark Side. I (and apparently David) beg to differ.

I haven't seen the written excerpt, but about this one:

Good excerpt. Bad realplayer, rebuffering every three seconds. Just let me save the danged file! Also, David not only sounds nothing like Sam Jackson, and his cadence is completely different from Jackson's. I couldn't believe that I was actually hearing Mace.

Stover continued what Denning started - pushing Jacen to the breaking point.

Now we have his novel Shatterpoint. I heard the excerpt, but even before the RealPlayer excerpt came out I had the feeling that someone in this novel, most likely a primary character, is going to be shattered, whether it be mentally, physically, emotionally, or a combination of the three. Considering what happened so far in the comics, and that Depa Billaba's the one in trouble, I get the feeling she's the more likely individual who's going to be "shattered". Mace is the other candidate, but that will be a tall order for Stover to fulfill.

    Caine --

Don't be alarmed. Nowhere is it written that you have to like everything I write, your handle notwithstanding.

Transitive logic: SHATTERPOINT is to TRAITOR as Mace is to Jacen. Different points of view call for different presentations.

Some fans aren't going to like this book at all.

I have to say that the audio excerpt intrigued me. That intellectual train of thought is really what I expected from Mace Windu, as a man of his stature. A thoughtful, quiet man, that acts physically only when absolutely neccessary (and with much pondering).

I really look forward to the book.

I was kinda taken aback by the audio excerpt.
I thought the excerpt from the AOTC paperback was good, but this other one kinda threw me off a bit.
As I've said before I'd rather wait to read the whole book, which I've no doubt I'll like. Though to be honest I can't help picturing Sam's Pulp Fiction character (sorry I'm useless with names sometimes) in the shower scene.
I always saw Mace as someone too arrogant and blind not as a cool bad a$$. But I guess I can shift my perspective.

Del-Rey now has a description and the first chapter excerpt up on Shatterpoint's catalog page. The description has alittle more info than before.

    Thanks for the heads-up. :)

    Link to the Shatterpoint page:
?The Jedi are keepers of the peace. We are not soldiers.?
    ?MACE WINDU
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Mace Windu is a living legend: Jedi Master, senior member of the Jedi Council, skilled diplomat, devastating fighter. Some say he is the deadliest man alive. But he is a man of peace?and for the first time in a thousand years, the galaxy is at war.

Now, following the momentous events climaxing in the Battle of Geonosis, Master Mace Windu must undertake a perilous homecoming to his native world?to defuse a potentially catastrophic crisis for the Republic . . . and to confront a terrifying mystery with dire personal consequences.

The jungle planet of Haruun Kal, the homeworld Mace barely remembers, has become a battleground in the increasing hostilities between the Republic and the renegade Separatist movement. The Jedi Council has sent Depa Billaba?Mace?s former Padawan and fellow Council member?to Haruun Kal to train the local tribesmen as a guerilla resistance force, to fight against the Separatists who control the planet and its strategic star system with their droid armies. But now the Separatists have pulled back, and Depa has not returned. The only clue to her disappearance is a cryptic recording left at the scene of a brutal massacre: a recording that hints of madness and murder, and the darkness in the jungle . . . a recording in Depa?s own voice.

Mace Windu trained her. Only he can find her. Only he can learn what has changed her. Only he can stop her.

Jedi were never intended to be soldiers. But now they have no choice. Mace must journey alone into the most treacherous jungle in the galaxy?and into his own heritage. He will leave behind the Republic he serves, the civilization he believes in, everything but his passion for peace and his devotion to his former Padawan. And he will learn the terrible price that must be paid, when keepers of the peace are forced to make war. . . .

Regarding the excerpt; it's very interesting (I might even buy it) but I have one point. IIRC, the plural of caldera is calderas, not calderae...

    ;)

Hat's off to Stover for some *very* decent research in learning about caldera-based volcanism, though!

If anyone has read both the Excerpt in the AOTC paperback, and this excerpt, you might have noticed that in both excerpts there is the same description of the passengers aboard the shuttle Mace is on.

I have asked Matt about it in his thread over at the Authors board. I just wonder if its a mistake or something.

Read the excerpt. This could be much better than Traitor.

Although beyond Vergere's Force beliefs & Ganner's death, there was little I found truly controversial about Traitor. I can easily liken Jacen's dhuryam killings to Luke killing the Emperor's clones in DE. That isn't a problem.

Still going to subject the full book to much scrutiny before buying though.

<<IIRC, the plural of caldera is calderas, not calderae... >>

Well, nuts. I used a Greek construction on a Spanish word. I guess the text sounded so authoritative that the proofreader just took my word for it . . .

Crap. Can I say crap, on this board?
