I agree with all of these assessments, but my reaction was positive. It was the fun Alien romp that I wanted it to be. And it did a decent enough job combining the various lore elements of the other films into a single film.

But yes, it offered nothing new. At least nothing that stood out.
This was the biggest point of contention for me, as I hate Alien Resurrection. But I thought this movie executed the idea better with the addition of the Prometheus lore. But, I agree that one's reaction to this part will be a big part of how one feels about the movie.
This is a good summation of my feelings. Good Alien fun, but unoriginal.

I will give a nod to it being visually impressive in most of the "Space" shots.

Romulus was plenty fun. Some reviews complained about the slow start but I found that to be a bit unfair. I enjoyed the sci fi visuals a lot and the characters a bit as it built up to the horror part. Maybe it leaned more into the body horror than I personally would have liked, but each to their own.

The characters are a bit thin.

    Cailee Spaeny's character is
basically Daisy Ridley at the beginning of The Force Awakens, replete with a vague orphan backstory, except that she already has her own droid recovered from a junk heap before the story starts.

As I said I really enjoyed it. It pays tribute to the other films while bringing some new things to it. It certainly is not a lazy rehash, although some fan service might turn off some. I am going to see it again this weekend. It isn't perfect, but much better than any film since Aliens imo. If nothing else it is very scary. I read a review that said this director dials everything up to 11, and I agree. May be too gory for some, this one really plays up the ickiness factor. Some great set pieces and a few great jump scares.

It's basically a live-action version of an Alien rpg cinematic scenario. So I enjoyed it. And like I thought, loved the "4th Act" surprise and really disliked the repeated iconic lines. Overall it was fun and I dig it as a hardcore lore nerd (it doesn't really affect Aliens since the plot potentially ties up its own loose ends, at least for the next 37 years or whatever). I'm far too into the IP to judge it as a film as a normie. But I wish it was less "fun" and more disturbing and haunting, like the early teasers made it seem.

Agreed. I really liked Rain and Andy. I'm a big Cailee Spaeny fan, so I was very happy she starred in this. And Andy was the best character in the film.

Yes. That Andy guy really nailed that part. the conflict on his face throughout the movie was remarkable. The girl is easily the best Alien lead since Ripley.

Just watched Prometheus and Covenant in full for the first time and enjoyed them both more than I expected to.

They are referenced in this new film, so it's good that you're doing your homework.

That's the only thing I didn't like about it, the callbacks to the recent films. That and some odd CGI

I knew they weren't going to ignore those films, so I was glad that they tried to combine the lore in a way that sort of works.

The irony is that we STILL haven't gotten the story of the original ship found on LV-426, which is the entire reason fans were clamoring for prequels in the first place. We wanted that story and Ridley didn't want to give it to us. So, we got Prometheus and Covenant instead. And now this film has jumped around in the timeline again, and is still ignoring it. Sigh.

We'll likely never get it, or the full continuation of the Prometheus lore. Hollywood, man, Hollywood.

I would have preferred a straight up horror movie. The recent callbacks seemed like they were Scott's idea, as he was a producer. That said; it's a remarkable sequel. A lot to digest. I'm not a fan of the recent movies (not this one) "who made me?" mumbo jumbo.

I kind of like the jumping around and never really outright explaining or directly following up on everything. There's a lot in these movies that exist or is stated without much context, and it's in those dark, unexplored areas where my nerdery thrives. I like Covenant a lot but am okay just imagining what happened next, and just inferring and connecting my own dots. I need some room to cook up my rpg scenarios and add my own tastes to the lore, and thankfully Romulus only adds and doesn't upset my head canon. :p As far as I'm concerned, David created a version of the Alien, not the Derelict version and that thing is still thousands of years old, the remnant of the engineers of old and their unknowable motives.

Right, I was just pointing out that the original reason the prequels were greenlit was because fans wanted the backstory for the ship on LV-426, and Hollywood saw dollar signs. But once Ridley became involved he decided he didn't want to tell that story, and instead created an entirely new lore that received mixed reactions.

All of the fans who clamored for the prequels still haven't gotten what they originally wanted.

With a Thursday box office of $6.5 million, Romulus may have a comparable opening weekend to Quiet Place Day One - $40+ million on the high end, though it might be much less.

Alien is generally perceived as hardcore, gory horror. So it does not have the widespread appeal of a Marvel or Disney movie. Several of my friends have no intention of seeing it.

everyone expects to see someone impaled on a xenomorph tail or get the second set of jaws directly in the face, but this movie went the extra mile.

My guess is that the third installment of that trilogy woulda finally explained LV426, as well as what happened to David. We’ll probably eventually get an explanation for all of that stuff in a book or comic or something. Otherwise, I’m fine with just “filling in the gaps” by imagining stuff in my own head.

Your friends are soft, and this movie is exactly what they need. They must evolve and become strong, or they will not survive.

Geez I guess I should have rewatched Prometheus instead of Covenant because I'd say this is way more Prometheus 2 than Alien 2. Also at a 4:30 pm show got some whoohoos in the crowd

Also Alien Resurrection Newborn 2.0 with Engineer face. Didn't see that one coming!

Also the music credits say "The Entry of the Gods into Valahala" is in there somewhere. Guess I have to watch again

Anyway it would have made more sense if they found the Covenant instead of experiments on the OG Xenomorph but i can buy it. Company and Not Ash gonna Company and when they extract the black goo can go haywire

was the videogame Andy was playing "Bug Hunt" was that where the term came from?

I enjoyed Alien Romulus, though at times it seemed more like an Alien Greatest Hits tribute which I think is to its detriment.
Some of the plot makes no sense at all, but the practical effects are good. It was better early on but started to slip as it got more into trying to replicate past Alien movies.
