Amph On Earth, Everyone Can Hear You Scream: The Prometheus / Alien Discussion Thread (Romulus, Earth)

Prometheus was the best film in the Alien Franchise since Aliens, and no one can change my mind. It was the characters, especially Elizabeth and David, that made the movie for me.

 

I don’t think anyone in here is interested enough to try to change your mind. You may find someone bored enough, though.

 

And Gerrit Cole is not an ace!

There was a lot to like about Prometheus but it was dumber than a GOP Senator from the south.

 

But you understand that that is nothing more than an opinion, correct? I can appreciate the movie just as much as someone else can appreciate say Everything Everywhere All At Once; of which I thought was highly overrated.

Because in the history of cinema, that is the only time that such an illogical behavior like that had ever happened.

 

Why do you care so much? Just enjoy the movie.

I don't think dodging sideways is gonna help that much when a skyscraper size spaceship is going to land on you

 

We're talking about Prometheus now and not Aliens 3 and Resurrection.

The truth of the matter is that it's the trendy "in" thing now to blast Prometheus as one of the more recent movies in the franchise, but overall it still earned far better reception among the critics than the last two movies with Sigourney Weaver; which were nothing more than desperate money makers.

I don’t know why people defend controversial art like it’s their own mother. I like stuff with a mixed reception. I’m not gonna go to war for it though.

 

I happen not to give a **** what critics think and it's a bit facile to dismiss criticism as the "in" thing to do. I said the same thing 60 pages ago.
All the Alien films after number 2 are crap. Prometheus more so because it promised to be different but squandered its own big ideas.

 

Simple. Some people have very personal connections to art. Especially people who are artistically minded.

 

Eh, why bother and get upset about it? I’m guessing I’m ‘artistically minded,’ and I know lot of people who are the same, and I can’t remember the last time there was actual tension about a disagreement about something we made our minds up about over a decade ago. I would have thought artistically minded people would be aware that arguing the point with someone who didn’t like it, especially after a decade, is just pointless. It is, after all, often a personal experience which other people aren’t going to necessarily understand. No ones mind is being changed about Prometheus at this point.

 

That I agree with. I hated the detour that Covenant gave, in many ways.

 

All the Alien movies have been pick-them-off-one-by-one thrillers. Prometheus promised to be something different, and in the marketing leading up to it, they didn't show the alien. You can read it in this very thread. Everyone was intrigued. The movie was to be "loosely connected" to the others. It would be about the big questions in the universe.

What did we get? A pick-them-off-one-by-one thriller. With the alien.
Formulaic pap.

If you don't like the movie, fine. It's more of a cerebral movie than the typical shoot everything that looks creepy to you films in the franchise; and by that standpoint I can understand why the cultists who support the franchise so much were disappointed by it. I've seen Aliens 3 and Resurrection only once, just to say that I've seen them. But Prometheus gives you some time to actually care about the characters involved; like the first two movies did.

 

Thank goodness you clarified, I thought he was speaking the word of God in here.
