… Tom being MORGOTH / MELKOR, the original dark lord, the root of all evil, the Satan of Middle-earth… NEVER was even guessed at in all the thousands of theories over the decades. Oh and he’s married to Ungoliant, who’s Goldberry?

Like… what

I know Tom says he’s “eldest of all things” and older than Middle-earth, but that just seems like he’s a Maia who became a forest spirit. That all the Maiar are the eldest. He’s said to be powerful enough to hold off Sauron until he has already conquered all the rest of the world, but that could just be him being the most powerful of the Maiar who are not in Valinor.

But Tom Bombadil is Melkor… the jolly singing dancing guy with yellow boots and a feather in his cap… who famously wasn’t even tempted in the least by the One Ring and was said he might have just forget he had it and lose it if it was sent to him as discussed as an option by the Council of Elrond in the books… that guy… Tom freaking Bombadil, is Melkor and the root of all evil.

Did the Valar destroy his mind and brainwash him to the point of insanity to give him a fate worse than death or something?

I’m pretty open minded when it comes to adaptations doing new things, but this is a dumb change / revelation. The whole “he’s Eru Iluvatar” is far, far better than this.

Well, that's one way of pretty much guaranteeing no one will ever take your show seriously... As if Series 1 was not enough...

 

I think it’s total nonsense, as the showrunners noted that S1 might be a hard pill for some fans to swallow because it’s a setup season where they felt they needed to invent a number of things, and that S2 would hew much closer to stories and lore fans know, and thus be far less controversial in that sense. This is the opposite. I don’t buy it.

 

... because the showrunners have proved themselves to be trustworthy and reliable people. Right.

 

I didn’t note any lack of honesty in the showrunners. And the inventions in S1 are nowhere near the magnitude of what’s being described here. A little contested myth describing the origin of mithril is nothing compared to giving us a full episode with Dark Lord Bombadil and his golden spider bride.

 

Nothing they did in season 1 was out of there.

 

What if its the reverse?

He is Ungoliant confirmed.

 

It checks out, if Tom is actually a bunch of spiders in a trenchcoat it explains why the ring didn’t affect “him”. None of the spiders were actually wearing the ring, it was just a ring on the outside of an inanimate person costume so it didn’t do anything.

Clearly exactly as Tolkien intended when he wrote it.

 

I am not nearly as well-versed in the lore as some of you, but I interpret Tom to be the friends we made along the way.
