It's not that surprising- think about the number of entries, target audience, etc. Reorganize that list based on total / number of films for an average gross and you get a much different story.

Middle-Earth averages 310,544,244 for 6 films (we'll exclude War for now since its gross was so minimal).
MCU is 360,214,151 for 35. DCEU is 185,442,905. Batman is, essentially, 11 films with an 252,800,871 avg. Wizarding World drops to 262,189,800 for 11. Disney Live Action drops to 218,362,134.

And on top of that, some of the ones above are sub-franchises of universes that have their own entry (like Avengers and MCU listed, or Batman having some DCEU, or Deadpool having some MCU, etc), which makes it seem like more franchises are ahead of Middle-Earth than actually are.

But it’s also weird because that list has separate entries for Middle-earth, LOTR, and The Hobbit.

Yes, but none of them are ranked above the umbrella ME entry, so they don’t affect the perception of how low on the list it is.

True… it’s just a very strange way of organizing, essentially counting things multiple times because B and C are listed on their own, but are also part of A above them.

I mean, I get it- they’re tracking franchises, and certain series within franchises are going to gross more than others (Iron Man vs Ant-Man), and something like Avengers vs Avatar are worthwhile comparisons, but the umbrella universes are also a thing and should be tracked too.

Plus I assume the list began before cinematic universes really began to heavily introduced such overlapping concerns 15 years ago (ie: SW, James Bond, JP, Batman… then comes the MCU, etc).

This has to be one of the longest Tolkien clips/interviews I’ve found, a rather deep discussion:

The interviewer is still a little thick... but yes, they were.

It's funny, it's almost like he knew that someday people would read the Silmarillion and also watch that clip. With those jokes about him being "rather meticulous," looking like he's dying inside when the interviewer mentions allegory, and the shrug when asked "why" when all the interviewer's attempts to piece it together have failed. Very consistent with all his letters, drafts, and everything written about him. Such witty lines that he thought of on the spot too, like the last one, he really was a genius. And you can see why he sometimes thought of himself as closer to Merry and Pippin than some of the other characters, you can really see them (and Bilbo!) in him, even if he might have felt more like Frodo when thinking about the war and lived more like Sam after the war, and thinking of his wife more like Luthien or Arwen.

"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
"Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in
thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond
all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled
mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
"Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."
"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
"But no living man am I! I am Eowyn, daughter of Theodwyn!"
"Er, really? My mother's name was Theodwyn, too!"
    "No way!"
    "Way!"
"Wow! Let's stop fighting and be best friends!"
    "Cool!!"

You never know. I think they already did a videogame set in the early 4th age.

War of Rohirrim has been added to streaming/cable and apparently doing better than in theatres (but that doesn't take much). I've had it on in the background like twice today as I'm doing stuff. the movie looks great, who said it looks cheap? It looks fantastic. Gets really gory and dark around the middle though. Probably going to be the last animated LotR in awhile but I dig on it

They can only adapt the Fourth Age timeline descriptions in the LOTR Appendices, and there really isn’t much of a story there. As it’s the peaceful aftermath of the war.

We do know Aragorn and Eomer hunt down the last of the Orcs and some small wars with the men who follow Sauron. You could do anything Epilogue kind of movie a last farewell, maybe with the death of Aragorn like Elrond forsaw

Unless there is more to the fourth age the Tolkien estate they may know about that we might not know about.

I am pretty sure in the overall general timelines of middle earth from first age all the way to fourth or further, there are many more types of foul creature like army’s besides other than just orcs tribes, goblin tribes, and uruk tribes in the Peter Jackson cinematic universe and both counts of foul creatures the possibilities of exploring is endless

Even if there is, and there’s no evidence of it, nobody would have the rights to adapt that material.

On the other hand, the first Middle-earth story will enter the public domain in 7 years, in 2032.

For the Silmarillion, it will be 2072, which is quite a while. I’m sure the Tolkien estate will feel they need to make movies/shows featuring the main Silmarillion stories before it goes public. But that could still be after we hit average life expectancy.

The people won't be "changing." It's the family, the grandchildren now. They seemed to be trying the Amazon show as a test balloon. But they are under no financial pressure to speed up the process.
