Personally, I thought those were some of ANH's weakest lines. Also, why not call him Anakin? That's who he is!

"Only a master of evil, Anakin."

Anakin Skywalker, the man Obi knew is dead and this "machine" is not the man Kenobi was best friends with. Also look at ROTJ, Luke and Ben scene

You must keep in mind that

    A. obi wan saw the holo of anakin kneeling before palpatine, and palpatine then dubs hims darth vader.

    B. All sith have the first part of their title as darth, so it was normal.

    C. Like some said before, darth vader was famous for all the jedi, being almost the only sith lord left, and jedi for that matter, and being the emporor's second hand man.

The more I hear it, the more I think Obi-Wan says it rather mockingly, too. A bit like the Emperor's "So be it... Jedi", just not so hateful.
Think of Obi-Wan's expression when he says "I have failed you, Anakin" on Mustafar.

Definately a mocking sort of thing. You can almost tell by the sound of his voice. "Only a master of evil, Darth. Same as, like TLJ said, "So be it...Jedi.

People don't talk like this in real life, you know..

If I was going to kill someone I wouldn't be using their name over and over again.. But Star Wars does this all the time.

What good does it do anyone to call people by their name in the middle of conversations?

    Hi Bill.
    Hi Gene.
Say that was a great movie last night wasn't it Bill?
You could say that again, Gene!
    Wanna see it again, Bill?
    Sounds good Gene.

Lemming, what you describe is even worse in SW comics - especially Crimson Empire. Someone pointed it out once and it's very noticable and funny since then :p

ah, but using the other's name has an emphasizing effect. In a serious situation, offering advice comes across slightly different if you say "Please reconsider this!" Or "Please, John, reconsider this."

and Obi-Wan twists it around by not using Anakin's name, but his "new" title, Darth. Thinking about it, it always seems like a taunt.
A bit like when Yoda asks the Emperor if he should rather call him Darth Sidious (although that was a bit different)

Of course it's ridiculous to use a name in every second sentence, but it has its purposes, too.

It is that ObiWan could not think about converting Anakin back, so he treated him like as a natural enemy, and named him as such.

I COULD swear that when I first saw the movie (at 7) he said: Only a master of evil VADER!

As I mentioned earlier, if you watch the films in chronological order by WHEN THEY WERE MADE, and ignoring what happens or what is defined by the Prequels (which GL hadn't written at the time he made A new Hope), you will realise that Darth probably wasn't yet a prefix to a dark side user's name.

I think that this is just a continuity error.

But rationalise it all you want. Its more fun.

He would have called him "My young Padawan"... but he's not a Jedi anymore, therfore calling him Darth.

He calls him Darth as a way of taunting him. It also shows that Obi-Wan is recognizing that Anakin is no more.

I agree. The problem is, Ben has at that point already told Luke (and therefore the audience) about Anakin. Calling the big bad murderer by the first name of Luke`s father would have caused some raised eyebrows with the more attentive audiences... "And they shared a name? But I thought he was named Darth...weird!" - "Now the old man`s so nutters he`s getting the two of them mixed up!"
    See?
It makes more sense if you look at it from ANH-perspective: He defies Vader`s claim that he is the master now by calling him by his first name, just as if he was still his pupil and therefore an inferior.
From the greater perspective...well, I practice selective listening[face_whistling]

Yep. He says "Darth Vader" and then later says "Nooch Vader." Not sure why, though.

"Only a master of evil, Anakin."

but in the ep2 and ep3 Count Dooku wasn't being called Darth Tyrannus. They just called him Count Dooku. anyways, i also thought that during the ben/vader duel were some of the weakest lines. I dont know, i just didnt like how Ben called him "Darth". It probably wasnt that bad when it came out but now that there are other episodes that support it it sounds kind of awkward.

i think if he would have called him Vader instead, it would have sounded better and wouldn't be being discussed right now.

I think the reason They refer to Dooku as Doku is because nobody knows his sith name besides Palpatine. I also think Obi-Wan should call him Anakin. I mean you know the man for a good fourteen years as Anakin. Then you just call him Darth he could at least called him Vader.
