Does anyone know if you can get this? I got the tune burnt into my head. They released another version with the soundtrack but it's not the same. The one she actually sings in Jabbas palace (before the time of the special edition replacement) you all know the one ;)

I believe the original sound masters for this track were lost in the mid-80's, which explains why its a no-show.

You could still buy it on CD in the 1990s, though.

Incidentally, I just watched the classic doc 'From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga' (by awesome documentarian and critic Richard Schickel) in which the detail the making of the Jabba's Palace scene. They show the puppeteers performing the song on set with the lyrics in English, before they were translated into Hutt-ese, and it's kind of cool. The chorus was "Shaping Up and Working Out!"

(That documentary was really, really great.)

Are you sure? I think my brother has that box set and I'm sure it was the 80's disco cover version.

yes, I am sure. It is track 11 on disc 4, and it is tagged as being in Return of the Jedi. I just popped it in to verify, it is the original version, featured in the film.

Just listened again, it is the same song, but definately a different version to the one in the movie.

I am assuming you are watching a pre-Special Edition (1997) version of ROTJ? The soundtrack came out before Lucas tinkered with anything, in order to compare the track to the film, you would need either a VHS or laserdisc version, that was printed before the Special Editions came out.

Also, just to be certain we are discussing the same anthology, this is what I am referring to.

    http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Soundtrack-Anthology/dp/B000002VI7

It is not a disco cover, it just sounds different because when you hear it in the movie, it is toned down a lot because the film sound has to focus on the foreground audio, the dialogue, etc, and the band is just background. You also don't hear the entire track in the film.

There was a dance club mix that was 5 minutes in length, and a dub mix that was over 7, however the version on the CD is only 2:48, so it is neither of those two.

    Jedi Rocks must die!!!

For the HD release this needs to go back into ROTJ. Even if they still CG Sy and the band the awful '97 version must be destroyed!

Isn't it part of "Jedi Rocks" from the soundtrack? Isn't Max Rebo part of that song too?

Um, when I watched From Star Wars to Jedi; The Making of a Saga, I think that the commentator said that the Sy Snootles song was originally a workout song in English that was translated into Huttese.

In the deleted scenes, Jabba actually took Sy Snootles aside after the song and asked her to never sing it again. Due to the fact that a song about working out really embarrassed him because um, well,....he was so fat.

And the (English) lyrics to Lapti Nek were actually written by Joseph Williams (the son of John Williams).

I vaguely remember back in the mid 80's there was a music video for Lapti Nek... wish I could find it somewhere...

You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuDK8IgByTg

It was also included as part of the limited edition Executor box set from a few years ago (PAL VHS only):

And I believe it was also included on the unofficial Deleted Magic DVD.
