...Jabba's dance party. Original or Special Edition. Which do you prefer?

Also, did the special edition change the way you viewed the atmosphere of Jabba's palace?

(I think everyone knows which I prefer based on many of my past posts/response)

That depends. I like both. I am fine with the OT version however I think the SE is better in terms of graphics. I really think that it was sort of unnecessary. As of late the only thing I've had to say about the SE is that it's only real breakthrough scene was Han and Jabba and ANH and while I'm not one to complain about seeing SW on the big screen again...that one scene in ANH is really all the SW had going for it. Scenes that will never happen like Yoda sparring with Luke on Dagobah using lightsabers or actually showing how much brutality the Ewoks actually have in them would make more of a SE. Or how about showing Palpatine dissolve the Senate? I'm sorry I'm straying from the actual topic. The CGI is nice however I was fine with the OT and as long as Max Reebo is there I'm okay.

Orignal all the way. It's the one I saw my first 10-11 viewings.

I liked the SE films. The best I think was ESB because there really wasn't many changes that affected the film from old to new. I consider what changes there were additions to it.

I think the addition of Jabba to ANH just made Jabba look like a blob Cartoon.

I never cared for the changes to RotJ except the ending scene additions of the planets. The placing of young Anakin seemed really out of place considering Anakin was at least in his mid-late forties when he died. I feel they should have left SW where he was.

Over all I think I enjoyed the Original films the best.

The original version has the better song, which was actually written by John Williams, and is mercifully brief with visuals that match the content of the rest of the film.

The SE version has a louder, more bombastic song, not written by JW, which goes on too long, with visuals that are wholly out of step with the rest of the movie. An extreme close-up of the lead singer's salivating mouth? Please. [face_talk_hand] This scene does not belong in a SW film.

I hate that scene. The close up of the mouth and the cheesy graphics. The song is horrible too.

It raises me to ask, just what the hell Lucas was smoking when he thought that changing it was actually a good idea.

Apart from the Greedo thing it's pretty much the only change that I actually hate in the '97 SEs. It's terrible :(

The SE remake of the dance party at Jabba's palace took a bad scene and made it worse. [face_whistling]

I like the graphix and additional shots better in the newer version, but the song is better in the original version. I think the close up of the salivating mouth WAS too over-the-top, but I enjoyed the rest of it for the fact that it enhances some various continuity aspects...

    So,

    SONG: Original.

GRAPHICS/SHOTS: DVD version (minus the mouth close up)

I enjoy both versions and take the most recent version as the version that happens at that moment.

The only slightly redeeming factor in the SE version is that the male singer is clearly a riff on Joe Cocker's distinctive singing physicality.

Does it fit in the movie? Hell no. But that one aspect entertained me the last time I watched the SE in 2004 or so.

I actually watched ROTJ about two nights ago, my friends '97 release VHS version. I realized I actually liked that one much more. The song is much better, and the puppet of the singer just looks so much more funnier. Everytime they showed a shot of her I'd start laughing.

With the OT DVD's, I am constantly sighing and rolling my eyes during that scene.

The original song, Lapti Nek, sounds like it might indeed be some strange form of alien pop music. Jedi Rocks sounds like what you hear going in and coming out of commercial breaks on Late Night With David Letterman(the only difference being the Yuzzum is a better singer than Paul Schaffer). The newer version takes you completely out of the film and grounds it in an "earthly" reality, especially with that annoying trio of Vegas-esque backup singers. You expect them to break into a full-blown version of "What's New, Pussycat?".

    Original rules, SE drools.

I like the Original Dance Party more. I liked the song better, and Oola actually dances. In the SE, there's too much going on. Three new dancers, and two new Max Rebo Band players.

hmmm i think i like them equaly,i grew up with the original i can remember recording onto tape the cantina band, max rebo band and the ewok song and used to play it all the time drove my mom crazy,i was abit taken aback when it was redone but i liked the yazzum as a character not him running up to the screen thought effects wise he looked out of place he looks slightly better in the dvd release.

    i also liked the female rodian as that was the first time i had seen one in the films,me and a friend convinved areselfs that the female alien on the end with orange hair was mara jade in disguise {when i was a kid i thought the first EU books were cannon and mara was suposed to be at jabbas palace.}

it was so different from the original but still starwars i found it great that i knew ROTJ off by heart i could sit there and say all the words and knew exactly what was going to happen next and then this completly different scene with new characters came up it was unexpected and i didnt try and block it out and think of the original instead i just watched it and enjoyed it and now my own kids love it my 6 year old wont watch the originals {says there boring} shame really but if starwars is going to capture the minds of todays kids its got to move on with the times which is why i think lucas makes these changes we hate jar jar my kids love him

Jabba the Hutt Dance party?... I would go to that.

I don't actually remember anything about the original. Either I've seen it once ages ago or not at all, but coming from someone who's only got the SE to judge, I have to say it feels just a tiny bit out of place with the whole sudden breakout into song and dance. Doesn't ruin the movie by any means, and I can't help but let that song get in my head, but with the sudden change in mood from eerie to flamboyant, it kinda makes me step back a bit and go, "okay..." but otherwise I barely mind it. If nothing else, it's a damn catchy song and Max Rebo's awesome.

I'm still pretty keen on this dance party.

The version on the right, from the original edition of the film, is more aesthetically appealing, more realistic and has more innate character than the flaccid, poorly-lit, awkwardly posed SE version on the left.
