I'm not a big gamer, but always like to have a few games that I can play no matter what my mood - have Halo and Rise of Nations for my non-SW games, and then KOTOR and Battlefront, KOTOR if I'm in an RPG mood and Battlefront if I'm in a shoot-em-up mood...I am now looking for a Jedi FPS-type game - yes, I know with a saber, it's 3rd person. I want a game with good saber combat. I've played both the demos, and liked JA better than Outcast, but I'm not sure if it was just because the Chandrila level on JA was so awesome(plenty of saber fights). Outcast SEEMS to have the better story, but JA is the sequel, so I thought that JA might be the better game. So, here's my question - Outcast or Academy? I want a good game with good saber fights - replay value is important - multiplayer would be nice, but not essential. I'll get the game for PC, btw. Thanks for the help. :)

I'm playing Outcast for the first time right now. I haven't gotten to any cool saber fights (if there are any), but it is a fun game. Havent done JA yet

The concensus I have seen is that JO is "pretty good" for SP and MP. JA "sucks" for SP and is "great" for MP

Outcast is the best one, I think. I like how Lando and Luke can have lightsaber duels.

I liked Outcast better because you play as an actual character(Kyle Katarn) in the EU, and not some generic character like in Jedi Academy.

Jedi Outcast. At first it seems that all those lightsaber fights in Academy are sweet, but there are so many that it gets old real fast.

Outcast has better moves (allthough less), beter storyline, beter gameplay, and is just muc more absorbing. Plus it has much better MP levels. It's a perfect mix of FPS and TPL. And in the rare ocasion that there is a lightsaber battle (don't wory, they get more pletifull by the end), it's really cool, and difficult, and not overused.

I have never really played Outcast. I had it for the computer but since my computer is crappy I only got to play it with with it being slow and jumpy the whole time.

I would get Outcast because it is a harder game to find(atleast where I live it is). It had a cool story and cool graphics, plus the end levels are really fun.

"Outcast SEEMS to have the better story, but JA is the sequel, so I thought that JA might be the better game."

In our culture, how can you logically think that the sequel would be better than the original? :p

Anyways, Jedi Outcast is far superior both in terms of story and gameplay. It's a slick, polished, balanced game that the developers obviously took their time with. Indeed, Outcast was the first LucasArts FPS in five years. They really worked to make this one great. I have been playing its multiplayer for three years and loving it. Its very balanced and has great maps.

Jedi Academy is, for lack of a better description, a bloated game. Sure there are more weapons, more lightsaber designs, more lightsaber colors, more lightsabers moves, and more force powers, but these things feel as if they were merely stuffed and packed into the game for no other reason than to make it different from Outcast. Well, more doesn't always mean better.
Also, the story in Jedi Academy sucks like a leech. It's very poorly planned, over-the-top, and just outright stupid. If you buy this game, the only thing you get out of it is a few more fancy lightsaber moves, and new multiplayer maps.

My advice: Buy Outcast. It's a keeper.

If you already have Outcast, Academy will come across as poorer in storyline and playability. Outcast doesn't restruct your powers based on sabers and alignement.

Indeed, that Academy is available so cheaply (AUD$10) says a lot about its quality, or lack of.

Ok, thanks for all the help, guys...I was leaning more towards Academy, but think I will go with Outcast, now. Even though there may not be quite as many saber fights, hearing that the extra stuff in JA isn't really all that great leads me to think that Outcast is probably better, at least to start out with. Only have a limited budget. ;)

And do you guys know where I can find Outcast? I haven't seen it in any stores recently...only Academy. I figure I can pick it up online if I have to..

Good choice on picking Outcast. You will be glad you did! And by the way, there are plenty of lightsaber fights in the game.

"And do you guys know where I can find Outcast?"

I just recently made the rounds of my local computer stores when I purchased Republic Commando last week, and I saw Outcast in nearly every store. It shouldn't be too hard to find. Try BestBuy, CompUSA, or a similar store. Of course, there is always the option to buy it online like you said. :)

I'd say get both. Outcast for the Single Player and Academy for the MP.

Another thing that I loved about Outcast over Academy was that it was very difficult for me, even on the esiest settings. There are very challenging, but fun bits. You have to explore your surroundings, and it's just great fun :) In Academy it was too easy, and the levels were way too linier. In Outcast I found it so hard to find my wayarround that I had to resort to using a cheat guide ;) Academy I didn't even have to think about where I had to go. It was very lame. Plus it's not only FPS, TPL in Outcast. There are some puzzles for your brain, like how to unlock a door, or jumping to insanely skinny platform to insanely skinny platform over a bottomless pit. It's just great fun, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, and you won't get board with the same old stuff. Plus I think that the bots are a bit smarter in Outcast :p And I said it before, MPin Outcast is far supirior to that in Academy. I fnot just for Bespin Streets ;) Also I was very fond of the Death Star map ;)

As for where to get it... well I remember two years ago or so, it was an insanely popular game, and was raved about like there's no tomorow. So you'll probably be able to find it in sotres like Circut City, and Best Buy. If not, I'm sure they can esily order it. If they can't, there's always Amazon, on which you can buy it for $12.75:

Outcast has a far better story, but Academy is the one for you if you're mostly interested in gameplay.

I have both games, both are fun though I go for Academy if you like more variety and multiplayer and go for Outcast if you want a good single player experience. id just get them both there real cheap.

...eh, you really can't lose with either..

Though, i think i agree with the general consensus that, if it's Single Player you're looking for, "Outcast" is better..More satisfying and MUCH more challenging..

However, if it's multiplayer..... Go "Academy". Seriously awesome on mulitplayer..

The single player is more hit and miss.. Has some levels that are great (usually the ones where you team up with Kyle) and some levels that are kind of lacking..

But, really, i'd go for BOTH if you can find them for cheap enough.

It Jedi Outcast worth $24 from EB Games as a pre-played game? And if anyone's ever bought a used game from ebgames.com, does it come with the case and instructions? [face_thinking]
