Anakin states in Episode II that Padme is leader of the opposition.

The who is the leader of the government / majority?

What party system does the Old Republic have?

I took that to mean "the loyal opposition" -- which is typically comprised of a single (or group) "public advocate" that stands entirely for the Republic and will publicly declare 100% in support of something ONCE decided, but will argue in favor of policies it deems favorable to the people BEFORE policies are decided.

Padme is the leader of the opposition to the Military Creation Act: She is the leader of the Senators against creating a military of the Republic.

As for the party system, the system of government is based on Senators representing planets: as far as I know, there is really no party system.

And shouldn't this thread be in the Ep. II forum? APologies if I'm wrong, but it doesn't really seem like much of a Lit question.

    Horn out

It's quasi-story related, so I'm inclined to let it go. Especially as it might be good to discuss this as a contrast from OR to NR Senatorial-styles (like that one guy who died at the beginning of The New Republic -- Leia said she argued with him frequently but his devotion to the NR was never in question and she respected him immensely)...

I hate to say this to a former mod, but shouldn't this be in the AOTC forum?

    EU bashers galore, however.

As earlier stated, she's the leader of the opposition to the Military Creation Act. That's why she was such a valuable target.

There is no evidence to point towards political parties in the Galactic Republic--it seems closer to a Roman-style Senate than a modern republican system.

Should it really be in one of the movie forums? We can easily point out that the novelization has Anakin stating the same thing. And the novelization is literature, which makes it possible to discuss in this forum.

    I second that Jedi Horn.

There certainly is no party system in the Senate. Cloak of Deception showed a lot of galactic politics and never mentioned any political parties. There are of course groups of Senators that ally themselves on most issues.
